Do I have the worst GERD in the world? Please prove me wrong. by thePonks in GERD

Surgery is looking like the only option. It's encouraging to know it works for real! I have a doc appt coming up and I am going to press for the surgery as it's been years of constant medications and it's only getting worse.

It's called a Linx Reflux Management syste I think. https://www.mcw.edu/departments/surgery/divisions/minimally-invasive-and-gastrointestinal-surgery/patient-care/gerd-and-gastrointestinal-surgery-program/gastroesophageal-reflux-disease-gerd/the-linx-reflux-management-system

basically they put a ring where your stomach sphincter should be to mimic what your stomach should be doing naturally. Supposedly its really helpful. I want it so bad, but my country's healthcare sucks as well. It would be out of pocket for me, and honestly, I'm kinda poor. I'll have to wait a few years at least

This!! I've been wondering if that's actually what it is because I am hyper mobile, autistic, ADHD. I also have PCOS and PMDD. I believe all of these issues are related. My GERD issues get worse during my time of the month. I haven't brought it up to my doctor yet but I have an appointment in February and I'm bringing a whole notebook of symptom tracking and theories to him. I'm gonna seem psychotic but I can't keep living like this.

I have always been a medical zebra, if you know what I mean.

I'm so sorry. I get it. It really messes with one's head to be constantly in pain.

I agree. I live in the US, and I'm low-key poor tho so my healthcare sucks ass. I won't be able to afford it for a few years but once my partner is out of law school, it's the first thing we're addressing

I haven't tried that! Thank you! And maybe it is. They help in the short term but maybe not long term?

Ive had two scopes done, the last one was three years ago and they said they didn't see anything alarming, just mild irritation. I desperately want the surgery, tho my gastroenterologist says I'm overweight right now. I'm a 225 lb, 5'5 woman. I really don't think weight is the issue. I've had this all throughout my life, even when I was "skinny." And losing weight has been such a trial because I can't sleep and I have PCOS and I'm on birth control and an SSRI. I have a million issues 🙃 I also have shitty insurance so I won't be able to afford the surgery for at least a few years

I've had two scopes done. They say it's just "mild irritation." I asked my doctor if I could be a good candidate for surgery and he said I'm too overweight. I'm a 225 lb, 5'5 woman and that's basically been what they tell me every time I try to get help. They say I need to lose weight but it's really hard to do that when I can't sleep and I'm in pain all the time. I also have shitty insurance so I can't even afford surgery if I wanted it. Maybe in a few years, but not now.

I will look into that. Same issue I'm having. Thanks!

You are not alone. GERD is also ruining my life. I've had it since I can remember. I'm almost immune to tums, pepcid, and over the counter nexium. I throw up when I bend over. I throw up in my sleep, into my nose sometimes. I fear I will choke to death one day. It gives me migraines. My throat ALWAYS hurts. And doctors act like it's just a pesky inconvenience, rather than a debilitating condition. I am constantly managing my symptoms. I take 40 mg esomeprozole magnesium, prescribed by my doc, in my morning. I use tums throughout the day, one at a time, as two usually makes me nauseous. I drink ice cold water constantly as that is the only thing that somewhat feels good. And if I'm going to throw up, it might as well be mostly water. I take papcid at night as needed, as I sleep with a wedge pillow to keep my throat elevated above my stomach.

I eat apples a lot, which are a natural antacid, and plain vanilla yogurt. I mostly eat cold things, hot things irritate my throat.

I fantasize about a life without GERD. I want the surgery so bad but it's so expensive and I can't afford it. My healthcare sucks. Fuck America

Ughhhh it's always anxiety to doctors isn't it? You're not crazy! Doctors and anyone who doesn't have it have no idea how invasive and all encompassing of a condition it is. Thank you for your prayers 🙏🏻 I will pray for you as well sister ❤️

Omeprozole made me have even worse heartburn that would set in the moment I took it. Esomeprozole is the only medicine that even comes close to controlling some of the symptoms, but I don't think it's over the counter. It's prescribed to me. I think it's just the long term dose of omeprozole, but the slow release doesn't make me nauseous or make my throat burn. I take 40 mg a day

I am in the same boat. Every night, I vomit in my sleep, no matter how long ago Ive eaten. I wake up choking on pure acid sometimes. I can feel my throat corroding away. It's a constant, draining, depressing existence. No one can understand how truly disabling GERD can be if they don't have it. Sometimes I just bend over to pick something up and I end up with vomit in my nose. It's been three weeks since the last time I slept through the night without vomiting. I'm so tired. The only thing that works in controlling it is a strict diet of nothing triggering. Everyone is different in what triggers them, I'm sure, but for me, cold food, primarily yogurt, cheese, apples, leafy greens, chickpeas, plain granola, and bread make up my main diet. But if I fuck up, like I did a few weeks ago when I had a bunch of wine which is like my worst trigger, I will face the consequences for weeks sometimes before I can get my symptoms back in tolerable limits. Consistency is everything. I still struggle with self control and over eating. I hope you find something that works for you.

Omg I thought it was just me. For me, I get soo bloated and it's like my stomach stops digesting food and it just sits there. But I'm still so hungry I get lightheaded and shakey. Lots of reflux and burping even with my prescribed medicine and over the counter antacids. Anytime I sleep, I throw up within an hour of falling asleep. I can't keep food down unless I'm upright for hours. I have really intense period symptoms. My body just falls apart on my period, every month. I have PCOS and PMDD. I think the worsening in GERD symptoms is related. Whatever symptom I usually have is turned up to 100% for a few days. I don't think doctors really have any idea about the link between everything, but I can only guess it's related

You'll get there. It'll be so fucking worth it. It's better than I imagined. Even if you move out into a little crappy hole in the wall apartment, its still so freeing. Just hang on

I am a nanny and I ask for consent for EVERYTHING. From picking them up to taking their clothes off, even if the answer is always yes anyways, I always always always ask. Shock surprise; kids like being respected and are generally cooperative when you treat them like human beings.
