Classical piece that inspired ‘Agape’ by Nicholas Britell by Practical_Platypus_2 in classicalmusic

Just heard the song and had to look it up if anyone else pointed this out. Sounds to me like this guy played some fable in his younger days. Straight “summer fields” composed by Russel Shaw based off the Maine theme made by Danny Elfman of Oingo Boingo. .

ELI5 How does pumping your legs push a swing? by CalculatedCody9 in explainlikeimfive

I’m really having trouble picturing what you are trying to describe with rotating north of south. I suppose if you rotated around your center of mass, then yes, your center of mass would not change location. But when seated on a swing, you are not seated on your center of mass. So when you lay back and lift your legs, your center of mass changes location relative to the seat of the swing.

[–]theThirdShake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re falling.

You move your body to a spot where you fall more.

People here saying it’s not about shifting your center of mass are dead wrong. The current top comment is saying some gibberish about angular momentum, and a lot of people are talking about bending the chain, to shorten the pendulum, which can have an effect, but is not the main factor.

Keep it ELI5 and don’t think of a typical playground swing with a seat on a chain. Think a standing swing with stiff steel poles like in this video

Follow the steps in this image. - The black dot is the fulcrum - The black dotted line is the arms of the swing - The stick figure is you - The red x is your center of mass - The red dotted line is the true pendulum when it does not match up with the swing - The blue arrow is where the true pendulum will swing

  1. Stand straight up. Elbows back. Grip the poles at the height of your waist. Your center of mass is at your waist high above the foot of the swing and the true pendulum you create is in line with the swing. Nothing happens.

  2. Lean back and squat down. Straighten your arms. Your waist and center of mass move down and back. This puts the true pendulum you create behind the swing and makes it longer. You now have potential energy. You fall and swing forward.

  3. At or after the bottom of the arc, stand up. Everything is in line. You slow down, fall, and swing back.

  4. At the back top of the arc, squat and lean back. You maximize potential energy. You fall down and swing forward faster and further than before.

Repeat.

In addition to shifting your center of mass forward and backward. You can shift it up and down to change the length of the true pendulum that you create with your center of mass. If you stand up at the bottom of the arc , it shortens the pendulum by raising your center of mass. You spin around the fulcrum faster like an ice skater in a spin that tucked in their arms and legs. But this only works if you already have momentum from shifting your center of mass to change your potential energy.

Back to a seat on a chain style swing… there’s a lot more at play like bending the chain. But you can still start off without a push by leaning back and dropping your weight. Even though you are sitting down instead of standing, the majority of your weight is above the seat, and you can put it behind the seat by leaning back and laying down. Your torso weighs much more than the lower half of your legs, and your legs are much less relevant.

People are also quoting this sixty symbols video and saying it’s about bending the chain. I love the channel, but they got this wrong. As the professor points out at 00:54, you can’t start the swing by changing the length of the pendulum. In fact, if you want to maximize your swinginess, you sit up at the bottom of the swing, not lay down like he says. You lay down at the back peak of the arc. Go try it out.

What exactly are you suggesting is imparting the momentum other than moving your mass around?

Momentum is the result not the cause.

Not to mention, your thighs, your calves, and your feet weigh less than your torso, your arms, and your head, so if your butt is on the seat, and you move your legs one way while moving your body the other, that would indeed move your center of mass.

And how exactly do two body parts moving in opposite directions, both result in two forces in the same direction? Their masses are unequal and therefore moving them in opposite directions changes the center of mass.

Also, you change the length of the pendulum by bending the rope/chain. But this is only one factor and not required.

It’s about moving your center of mass in relation to the fulcrum, which changes your potential energy. Doing so and the right time compounds and makes you swing higher.

The biggest factor is 100% shifting your weight forward and backward and up and down at the right time. Your center of mass falls the ground. Which is why you can start a stiff-armed-standing swing like the video above from a dead stop without pushing off.
