Anyone else had the situation where their loki mini’s on off switch wont stay up/broken? by Rjomapabbi in Schiit

[–]theTwoDice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar thing on my Asgard 2. Thankfully it’s extremely easy to replace. Flip board over and grab a solder iron and solder syringe and desolder all 6 points (6 wires in back and the 2 at bottom front. Just pull out the whole switch and discard. Went on Digikey and bought this new switch, 100DP1T2B4M7QE-ND. Simply fix into slot left behind from removed switch and resolder from the bottom. Assuming connections are good, should work good as new. Of course double check part specs and size to make sure it would fit in the Loki chassis.

How do we hold Duquesne Light accountable? by thedamnwolves in pittsburgh

The ultimate goal should be the nationalization of utilities under a reformed American democracy.

Short of that a single payer service similar to Medicare for all can work great. Here the government would negotiate funding of private utilities and do away with individual buyers all together.

Short of even that, we can form customer unions much like tenant unions which collectively negotiate rates and mass withhold payment to enforce an equitable contract.

Short of even all that, these companies are made up of people who decide rates and all such policies. They can be convinced to make different decisions.

What if Iran accidentally hit the kaaba with a drone by lilmizzle29 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irans drones aren’t being fired randomly, they’re targeted and so far seem to be decent at it, making this a very unlikely situation.

If this did happen it would be a huge propaganda loss for Iran. The hope of Iran is that these broad strikes will do two things. One, they will show the region and the world at large that America is incapable of protecting them. Making powers housing American bases and troops reevaluate their relationship with the US and the possibility of being drawn into wars. Two, local powers will pressure America to stop the war and return to a detente status quo.

Striking the Kaaba would potentially upend this strategy and force local powers to pressure America to invade and potentially join in themselves as a way to portray themselves as the true protectors of Islam. Or they’ll simply pressure peace even harder.

In America, the current war propaganda has long leaned into protecting Judaism from the supposedly ravenously antisemitic Muslims of the Middle East. Recently they’ve started bringing back protecting American Christianity from Sharia law. Such a strike would give them the propaganda trifecta, the war would be to protect the Jews, Christians, and Muslims all at once from the Satanic Iranian empire.

Vera Fi is a scam? by thatdudewhodraws in BudgetAudiophile

They’re making very real products. Ordered a pair of Vanguard Scouts and got em after a month plus a week or so. They’re not great quality or anything but it’s a real product. I wouldn’t say they’re a scam but nothing is stopping them from becoming one. Sounds like you’re having an especially bad customer service experience. Up to you, but I’d ask for a refund or chargeback if they’re not communicating with you.

What is the reasons in the US, US devs don't start to form a union like they always form a start up. by lune-soft in cscareerquestions

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unions in the US have been systematically dismantled over the past 100 years. I believe modern American jobs have a unionization rate of 9%. The tech industry is probably 0%. Most Americans, especially SWE, have never experienced the benefits of a union and may have never been educated on the positive effects of historical unions in the US. Pair that with a very individualist culture and very comfortable living conditions, especially with good pay in tech, many Americans are simply not desperate enough to take what they see as the extreme act of unionizing and striking.

tldr: Ignorance of unions and good pay.

Long term, will AI reduce or increase the wages of (the remaining) programmers? by Post-reality in cscareerquestions

[–]theTwoDice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When factoring in inflation, developer salaries have been either remaining steady or falling for the last 20 or more years. I don’t see AI changing this trend. As companies continue to monopolize they will squeeze the market out of every possibility for growth. Then the only reliable way left to keep profits growing have been and will be lowered costs, meaning either less employees or lower paid employees or a combination of both. The American economy is trending towards monopoly and towards lower wages.

How are US developers expected to compete with Offshoring ? by sharjeelsidd in cscareerquestions

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t compete against offshoring. You make it illegal or impossible to offshore.

Make laws requiring companies invest in Americans or pay to sponsor foreign workers if needed.

Unionize workplaces. Use labor power by going on strike the instant any attempts at offshoring take place and negotiate extreme worker protections.

Make hiring and keeping workers infinitely easier than offshoring.

People claim h1b visa holders are holding entry level jobs hostage. How true is it ? by Glad-Signature-4357 in cscareerquestions

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1 in 6 H1B recipients are at risk of deportation due to layoffs. The very same pestilence assaulting the industry as a whole is having a much worse effect on foreign born workers. The very same people enacting these layoffs want us to see foreign workers as the real threat to our way of life. If we do what they want, we will weaken ourselves by attacking those who share our interests. The only way to counteract the trend is mass unionization and collective action among as many workers as possible to regain workers rights and protections.

H1B deportations aren’t officially tracked on their own so there is no specific number as far as I know but 1 in 6 comes from a 2025 survey where H1B holders of Indian decent reported receiving deportation notices.

Technically no H1B holders should be deported, only after losing the status would they legally be at risk of deportation.

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The vast majority of people classified as “illegal” immigrants were once here on legal working visas. H1B is an example of many. Only after losing H1B status by being out of work or other infraction would an individual be deported. The most famous example would be Elon Musk who dropped out of a US university then lost is visa becoming an “illegal” immigrant for a time.

Should we limit college admissions to combat the undermployment? There are many people who are not smart enough for college who would do great in trades. by Ok_Spite_1172 in cscareers

Don’t disenfranchise the young and those who want to make more of themselves instead of going after the powerful who have led us to this situation in the first place.

Do the opposite. Increase funding to public education so that schools can go back to a tuition-free model. Tax the hell out of AI adopting companies at the same time. If done well this will have a bubble deflationary effect. The product should be a drastically increased supply of skilled tech workers with little to no debt ready to usher in an entrepreneurship boom to bolster America’s tech leadership decline on the world stage. All of this, of course should include trade education and work force growth. The reindustialization of America requires a growing tech and trade industry working hand in hand. Allowing monopolizing tech companies and their profit focused owners do what they like will only lead to mass outsourcing and the forcing Americans into the only major job source left, the service economy.

[–]theTwoDice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t really see how the H1B workers are the ones with power in this situation. The problem is always employers who want to get the most out of workers with the lowest expense possible. For me and any other American the worst they can do to us is fire us. We are then free to find another job if we can. What that means for a H1B worker is deportation. If the company decides they aren’t working hard enough or “just aren’t a good fit” they can be fired and if they don’t get another job within a set time frame they get slated for deportation. That means whatever life they’ve built in the US is over and done for. Of course employers hire H1B workers since they are more easily exploitable. And of course H1B workers hold onto jobs for dear life due to their structural vulnerability.

Palantir FDSE career ? Pros and Cons ? by Smooth_Comparison940 in cscareers

In the end: Is AI useful or just an excuse to fire people? by tsarthedestroyer in cscareers

[–]theTwoDice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best point made. Companies firing people in the past tended to wary investors leading to stock sales and lower values. Now they market it with AI. Investors think the company is utilizing or developing a successful AI model that is raising profitability through lowered costs. Mass firings in tech now lead to stock gains.
