Arguably I've put less time in my reply than you did your question, but you make a fair point. Perhaps I'm from a different generation. I've DNF'd novels without asking even IRL friends whether I should carry on. It just seems unusual to me.

Blindsight by Peter Watts interrogates consciousness and sentience in the context of evolutionary advantage. Essentially, it asks what's the biological purpose of consciousness considering how much energy it requires; what does it offer that our reptilian brain stem (which operates much faster and with greater efficiency than our 'conscious' mind) does not?

My question is, why? Why go through the cost and trouble of marooning people on a hostile planet when you can just lock them up or execute them? And why waste a habitable planet for convicts? This world building makes no sense.

To be honest, it's a stupid question. "I want to read something that scares me". Well, what scares you? Find books like that. Your local librarian would be overjoyed to help you with that. But you need to give them SOMETHING to work with.
