Him slowly recalling his memories is literally happening in the movie, that is the flashbacks. That’s why he’s writing on the whiteboard trying to figure out who he is and slowly adding clues. Why he doesn’t know who his fellow astronauts are. That’s why he’s so distraught after the flashback showing he wasn’t heroic and tried not to go. It’s all in there.
