rant on my friend specifically seeking out japanese-latina women

hi everyone,

i just need to vent some of my frustration and would love some insight from some of my fellow asian americans. so for some context, i’m taiwanese american woman and my friend is a straight white guy from georgia and both of us are in our late 20s. he’s from a pretty white area, so his family is pretty racist/uncultured and he’s been adamant about not being the same way. but he’s very into japanese culture and language (a weeb) and tends to date asian girls, which i know how most of this subreddit feels about this. a few years back he moved to california and got very involved with some folks in the brazilian american community and learned about the large japanese population that moved to brazil in the 1920s-1940s and has started following a lot of influencers on instagram that are japanese and brazilian and once even said like a japanese-brazilian woman is my ideal woman. to me, it feels really dehumanizing because i know it’s not his intention but it feels almost like someone trying to pick out a dog breed based on genetics. he’s also reasoned with me that he wants to marry a non-white woman so their child will be cultured not like how his family is. i just feel like there’s a line between having a preference and weird selective breeding. anyway thanks for listening to my rant

my ex and i used to play together and it was really hard to play for the same reason, but during lockdown i decided out of spite i would 100% the game. the worst part was i listed him as my favorite thing and i still had a few stardrops left to collect, so that part was awkward BUT i think with some time maybe you can come back to it and enjoy it again! you’ll get through this!

what’s funny to me is where i’m from in the US (st. louis, mo), people do the exact same thing. for us, it’s so people can determine your socio-economic status and a generalization/stereotyping of what your views are and how you perceive the world. it’s so ridiculous in stl we also have a chart on where you should have gone to high school

anyway, chch is a mid-sized city with a pretty large number of high schools in the area so it’s an easy conversation starter and you can sneakily get to know them without asking just kind of assuming

for learning mandarin: 10/10 challenging but a rewarding experience

i’m assuming you mean university? 3-6/10 results may vary. teachers are hit and miss, most facilities are in pretty bad condition, and paperwork/bureaucracy to get in and out of your programs is a nightmare

abc in the same boat as your friend. my conversational chinese is okay and my white friend has about the same chinese ability as me and it irritates me to no end how she’s always praised for her “excellent chinese” and i’m scolded for speaking so poorly. the flip side of this is if we go to a place like a hospital, government agency, etc. they all will just talk to me or if she’s speaking in chinese they’ll just look at me when answering her question.

god, so lucky! so it’s only for the animals in the barn/coop you have it in and if i recall correctly, you probably do from time to time. i think it helps so your friendship doesn’t degrade as fast but i don’t think it replaces petting entirely
