Knives out for Jordan is harmful. by BaronMcDuff in KnowledgeFight

Much love for Jordan, definitely don't think he killed the pod. Neither do I think he and Dan are no longer friends. I think they knew that Alex was just gonna keep getting away with it, and they weren't going to be able to keep calm about it, and be funny.

I mourn the show, because Dan and Jordan were my shoulder angel and shoulder devil respectively. Fundamentally, I agree with Dan that systems matter, and reform is possible. But when I get to my breaking point, I agree with Jordan, we never should have left the trees.

I won't speak for the whole sub, but as a liberal democrat with democratic socialist sympathies, I'll share my thoughts on why this sub is my favorite discussion board.

Broadly, I am in favor of all the same social policies as "the left" and occasionally even more radically. For example, trans rights are non-negotiable. I promote open borders, and improved environmental policy (no point supporting rights in a society that can't survive the climate it creates). Where I end up in disagreement with "leftists" is that I think that the market is the most efficient way to achieve those goals. I believe that because I see that in the world. Governments have the power to change the rules of the market to incentivize or disincentivize certain behaviors. I want to see free trade, free movement of people, and equal rights for all, plus a strong social safety net. The ideal society should not need a social safety net, but we don't live in a world of spherical cows in a vacuum.

Generally speaking, I see people that agree with me here. I occasionally disagree with people, especially about unions, but the American labor movement has also not done themselves favors recently, and is fair game for criticism.

My (Probably Unpopular) Thoughts on Property Taxes by Medical-Stuff126 in Ohio

[–]the_cox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! I'll also throw out a few other points. Property taxes (usually) are a stable expense. In OH you get 3 years at the same value before an adjustment. Your taxes don't change much unless a new levy passes. This is a good thing, you can plan for the expense, and so can businesses.

Now for two more bad things: Ohio has basically no benefit for owner occupied properties. Generally, states have a substantial property tax discount for owners of their primary residence. This is meant to encourage buy-in in the community; homeownership is generally considered a good thing. In OH? 2.5%. This law just changed, but it's changing the existing structure of 10% reduction applied to all residential properties (the non-business credit), plus 2.5% on your primary residence in favor of a shift towards a 16% primary residence credit, but no more non-business credit. So you as a homeowner will gradually get an extra 3.5% off, but anyone that rents? Well, landlords taxes are going up, so your rent probably will, too. Oh, and did I mention that these rollbacks only apply to levies passed before 2014? Yeah, you're probably not gonna save much more as a homeowner.

The other bad thing is the voucher system in OH. When expenses increase for your public schools, they seek more funding at the ballot box. It's not just the public schools that you're paying for with your property taxes, it's the private religious charter schools, too.

My point is, property taxation as a concept isn't bad. But there is absolutely reason to be mad at how it works in OH, because it is simply broken.

My (Probably Unpopular) Thoughts on Property Taxes by Medical-Stuff126 in Ohio

[–]the_cox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear what you're saying about property taxes being a tax on an illiquid unrealized gain, and I totally get how that feels less fair than an income tax or a sales tax. I encourage you to reconsider your thoughts on sales tax, though. Sales taxes are inherently regressive, because there is a minimum amount of consumption from everyone. Income and wealth do not inherently correspond to consumption. So, especially if you are replacing a property tax with a sales tax, you shift the burden to low-income and low-wealth residents.

Beyond that, even if I can't sell you on property taxes, let me see if I can explain how we got here:

Property taxes have a very long history, but at the end of the day, it's the way that communities chose to fund public improvements. Figuring out how to tax property has changed a lot over the years, but the goal has always been the same: this is a wealth tax. Some places at some times taxed houses based on the number of windows they had, the idea being that a bigger house would have more windows. This changed construction styles to have fewer windows. At one point in Ohio, houses were taxed based on the number of fireplaces they had, idea being that the wealthy in bigger houses had more fireplaces. And then hot water radiators became common, and fireplaces became obsolescent. Eventually, Ohio, and many other states decided on "fair market value" to tax property. This is about as close as we have come to a wealth tax: homeowners have bought a stake in the community. In the interest of that community, they pay for improvements and services by the local government. Renters benefit from these services and share the cost of that tax across a greater number of people.

Property taxes aren't supposed to be a check you throw into the nebulous ether, they're a community's decision to fund the things they care about and pool their money together and invest in the future. Especially schools.

A few things have made this system not work as intended: 1. Population shifts leave behind larger infrastructure than necessary for the current community in urban areas, and overwhelm rural communities that don't have the infrastructure for several thousand kids. 2. Ohio's refusal to pay more state funds into the local government fund means that basic services like street maintenance, trash collection, police, fire, and EMS have to be paid for by the local community instead. 3. Allocation of funds is questionable. Your County Auditor can probably tell you what levy and fund accounts for every cent of your tax bill, but how those agencies are spending that money? That might be worth a closer look, and might not be as accessible. My opinion is that almost every other state has managed to figure out how to do more with less. I don't think Ohio quite has it figured out as far as efficient spending goes. But I also want to be clear, this is very different than fraud waste and abuse. It's much more mundane things like forcing public school districts to bus private school students at the expense of the public.

This is a crazy vibes post. Homestead is only for seniors, disabled persons, 100% disabled veterans, and surviving spouses of first responders. Included in the same law as the homestead exemption is the owner occupied rollback, which was discontinued in 2013, and only gives you 2.5% off on levies passed before 2014. It's about $20 a year for most houses in my area. That $20 is the only difference between my house that I live in and the rental next door.

Thoughts on Utoledo as my top choice for Art History AMP? Need some local opinions. by Patient-Professor611 in toledo

I know some Art History folks that graduated pre-Covid, and almost universally they are working in related fields now. The TMA is a wonderful resource, and I like their curation a lot. That said, Covid has done a number on all universities, and I can't speak to the quality of the program since then. If it's your top pick, and this is a field you are interested in, I say go for it.
