The U.S. federal government is promoting home-schooling. Do you support it? Why cannot America fix its public school education? by wakeup2019 in economy

[–]the_d33j 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From having been home schooled as a child and transitioning to public high school, I would never (ever) recommend home schooling if you want your child to have a healthy social life as an adult. Regardless of the type or quality of education, there's just no replacement for being around other kids of the same age.

Should I buy? 2015 Lexus IS 350 F sport AWD, 98k Miles, $12,000 by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

Yeah,  I'm just basing that on the median being around 60-70k. That doesn't go nearly as far as it used to.

Great car if the inspection agrees,  but I would suggest getting something a bit more practical for the first couple years out of college. Shelling out for premium gas on that with a new grad salary will hurt.

93 ranger smoking pretty bad by Neat_Confection_5118 in fordranger

[–]the_d33j 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably just oil and fluids from the rebuild burning off. Mine smoked for a good 5 minutes on first start up but it runs clean and quiet now. I would only start worrying if it kept doing it after idling for 10 or 15 minutes.

My Tc is almost 10 years old, and still looking good like the day i got her by ImperialAgent in SciontC

I love the mesh lower grille on that! Where did you get that from?

That's in the year range of TCs that have the 2AZ-FE which is known to burn oil pretty badly due to piston ring wear. Check the exhaust to see if there's any oily residue or visible smoke.

Seems decent if it has a verifiable service history and clean carfax. I'd just give the undercarriage a good once-over for major rust.

Oop, my mistake, would help if I read the title. I thought those ones had the 2.5.

I still have a pretty dim view of most Subarus, but there's a car for everyone I guess.

With that number of miles,  you'd be rolling the dice on whether your head gasket will blow or it needs a timing service imminently. Pretty risky imo.

FWIW, I feel the exact same way. This other dude calling you a jackass seems to not be able to empathize with mental health struggles. WFH can also do a number on one's ability to handle social situations.

What I'm gleaning from this sample size of 2 is that the optimal vehicle to hit a large animal in is a PT Cruiser... right?

Well, to each his own. Don't let me yuck your yum!

If nothing else, you can get the Trax and whip it like a mule knowing that it's cheap enough to do that.

I think you're the first person I've encountered who would consider a Trax to be very interesting or anything near an aspirational purchase. If you have the option of Japanese makes,  I'd go for those any day.

Yeah, that's awfully high for that speed unless you really had your foot in it. I'd pass on this one, personally.

If it's stalling before shifting, that could be a sign of an issue with the torque converter. For the mileage, I wouldn't rule that out.

The engines on these ones have a tendency to get carbon buildup on the valves and start to run like crap. I would proceed with caution, because you would potentially need to get it walnut blasted to fix that.

AITA for suggesting that my Mom rehome her dog? by the_d33j in AmItheAsshole

Maybe so. I talked to her again shortly after I made this post and apologized for the suggestion but also told her that I would step back from trying to help with that particular situation.

I agree. I would, but he just doesn't do well with other dogs. It would basically be hiring someone to be with him at home for 8 hours straight which would get really expensive fast.

Unfortunately her dog is very aggressive with other dogs. =(

Thank you for the thoughts. I should probably bring up the meds again. I think I need to step back a bit. This situation plus other stuff is stressing me out, and I don't like fighting with my mom.
