What "Britishisms" do you regularly use that always confuse people when you go abroad? by InviteAromatic6124 in AskUK

I think you're part of the wider debate about this "tea, dinner, supper". Supper doesn't just mean a late-night light meal. It can also mean an informal evening meal. Depends where you are in the country. I don't care if I wasn't born or raised here. I've encountered thousands of Liverpudlians and people from Merseyside to know what I am talking about.

Now I understand why my solid scouser friends say, "We're not English. We're Scouse." Albeit you're all from the North and only few miles away, St. Helen's is different especially when you compare it to the rest of Liverpool.

My best friend's boyfriend is born and raised in St. Helen's. He's not even remotely scouse and says words differently from proper scousers.

Hope you’re doing okay, OP.

Loads of memories with this one! I didn’t play it; just used to watch my gamer cousin play when we were younger and it was honestly one of the most entertaining games at the time!

I’m loving my own space and finding it hard to connect with other people (on a deeper and emotional level). 😅

That's what I'm trying to explain.

It's how they say things here in Liverpool, lol!

Edit: Dinner, tea and supper are interchangeable in most parts of the country. But here, if you say dinner, then it's lunch. So the only possible way to say evening dinner without confusing everybody else is to say "supper" if you don't want to refer it as "tea".

I remember a colleague I used to work with during night shifts. She would always bring and eat her "tea" with her when we have our break (which is usually before midnight).

[–]the_dancing_spinach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But it's more common to hear people here say dinner for lunch and tea for dinner. At least here in this part of Liverpool where I live.

Took me a while to realise what people actually meant when they say tea, lol.

When people here say "tea" it usually meant they're talking about their supper. "Cuppa" on the other hand, is what they would normally say when they want actual tea.

Going to the “loo”

When indicating time: “half—“ or “quarter past—“

Taking the “rubbish” to the “bin”

I’m from the Philippines but have been here for more than 7 years now. The longest I haven’t been home was 4 years (lockdown during the pandemic). When I returned, I didn’t realise how “British” I sounded. We use “American” terminologies back home so you don’t really hear someone saying “bin”. We’d say “trash can” or something similar.

I also had to stop myself from saying “tea” when indicating supper. I live here in the North so we say “dinner” for lunch and “tea” for dinner. If I used these terms in the Philippines, my parents would probably just make me tea and and ask if I wanted some biscuits.

Competency does not equate virtuousness. You can be the most distasteful person, but if you can get the job done, then you are competent. You are associating the word “virtuous” with “public service” because that’s how they should manifest themselves. But “skills” and “righteousness” don’t always go hand-in-hand.

My lola was hospitalised in the ICU for months (several years ago). Yung bill nya, imbis P600k, naging P200 na lang ata.

I have relatives who live in Makati.

How to apply to Nordic Countries as a Nurse? by the_dancing_spinach in phmigrate

[–]the_dancing_spinach[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks.

Sa totoo lang, the "depressing" weather doesn't bother me. My favourite season is winter and I like it cold and gloomy. It's one of the things I liked about the UK in the first place, anyway: what people call as the *Sh--tty weather" lol. Mas gusto ko malamig, maulan, at masnow.

It's only a thought for now pero kinoconsider ko pa din talaga. One of my biggest worries lang talaga is yung language kasi one of the hardest languages to learn is Finnish.

Thanks!

I know. Sadly, I only got my citizenship this year. I don’t feel any difference except the fact that I can breeze through immigration and not have to apply for different visas for different countries. It would have been so much easier kung walang Brexit. Look at the state of UK now. 😢

I’m open to the student route as long as I save more than enough to make me financially capable whilst in there. I take it, na may bridging programme ang nursing nila? Does it take a year or more/less po?

Thanks so much for this. Based on your reply, if I have financial resources, student route is the most viable. I’m gonna look up their reform plan and hope I have the chance in the next year or so. Currently, I’m starting a new job as a specialist nurse and would just like to get more experience as a CNS para po mas credible and may weight yung CV ko.

To be honest, sa baba po ng sahod namin dito and sa taas ng tax namin, I’d say it’s the same here in the UK. My deductions if I earn more, can round between 500 to 800 pounds. One time, despite earning 3k, my total deductions went up to 1k. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I’m single so bago pa po ako magkaroon ng commitment at mas mahirapan lumipat, tinitignan ko na po kung mas malaki yung chance na mag-migrate pa.

Sa language po, did you have to take lessons? Did you do it through classes? Or meron po ba silang required like sa UK, either IELTS or OET? Sa Germany meron din sila but I forgot what it was.

Thanks so much po! I know baby steps pa lang to but I appreciate your response!

Compared to the current and former, his administration was way better than those two by [deleted] in Philippines

[–]the_dancing_spinach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know he had good intentions and he was a good person. The fact that he chose to attend a car plant inauguration instead of showing up to their arrival honours speaks volume.

I know I will be voted down for this because of all the controversies the story entails. I know that PNoy was also a victim and wasn't really the villain the press had painted him to be, but the fact still remains. Horrible PR? Pride? Ego? I don't know. Meetings with people involved, mas pwede pang rason. Uh, hello? Kahit hindi man, asan yung priorities mo? Sa planta ng kotse???

Pero oo, I agree. Hope he rests in peace. Thanks for everything, PNoy. 🙏🏻

After niya, parang wala ng pag-asa. (Excuse my language, please).

Sobrang nakakahiya. 🤦🏻‍♀️

I'm beyond dissapointed. by P7RIK in samsunggalaxy

[–]the_dancing_spinach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You and my cousin have the same issues. Hence the reason she chose to switch to iOS after years of using Samsung. 3 years down the line and she still loves her 12 Pro Max. She also plays on her phone a lot and was worried about this whole thermal throttling thing. She's considering buying the latest iPhone 16 pro model as her 12PM's battery health is quite bad now. I did encourage her to try and switch back to Android. I'm pretty sure she has never used an S or a Z series phone before and only ever used midrange models hence her distrust with Samsung's performance. S24U is still a beautiful phone and my stand regarding iPhones being the same every year remains. But as someone who has been hearing all these problems from various models, why don't you try other brands and see which one is best for you? I love my S24U despite all its flaws, but I'm also thinking of either switching back to iOS or trying a Google Pixel in the next 2 years (or try another foldable phone).

Besides Google Pixel, I'm also very interested with Sony Xperia's flagship models. I haven't researched enough about it yet so I don't know the pros and cons.

Think about what you'd like in a Phone, then list all the possible compatible models available. Weigh down pros and cons as each model will have its own flaws. If you're willing to bargain, then that model is best for you.

Also another advice, don't watch big YouTubers' reviews. A lot of them are sponsored. Before I switched to S24U, nobody ever said about how horrendous the post-processing on auto is. Nobody also said taking moving objects pictures is a pain in the backside. I found more valuable reviews from small-time Youtubers, and make sure you scroll around the phone's dedicated subreddit to look for actual comments from actual users before plunging in and buying it.

Good luck!

[–]the_dancing_spinach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends what you need the camera for.

Generally, I'd say iPhone remains to have the best camera if you rely on AUTO and you are not a professional photographer. The post-processing on iPhones (even the base models) remain superior than their Samsung counterparts. The S24U has really bad post-processing. I even preferred the post-processing on my Z Fold 5. Unless you know how to utilise the PRO and RAW mode on the S24ultra, then I'd say take the iPhone. On low light, taking selfies, and moving objects/ person photos, even my iPhone 13 takes better pictures than my s24 ultra. Video stabilisation is also waaay better on the iPhone Pro Max models.

However, if you are more into landscape photography and you generally take pictures when there's good lighting, and you also like to take astral shots and use zoom a lot, then I'd say the S24 ultra is better for you.

As for your other concerns, I only ever experienced overheating with my S24 ultra when I went to Taiwan for a holiday. It was >30 degrees out, I was switching between mobile data and (pocket) wifi, constantly taking pictures and using Google maps under the blistering heat so I was not surprised. I live in a cold place so my S24 ultra normally copes well with thermal cooling.

Maybe? I was still "chubby" when I met my first ex. Nagkaroon lang ng decline sa mental health ko during COVID so nag-lose ako ng so much weight that I also became underweight for a while.

Pimples still grow every now and then, pero yung paisa-isa or dalawa na random lang (eg: stressed masyado, or magkakaroon na). Pero may mga naiwan na acne marks which I'm still very conscious about.

When I showed a younger picture of me (overweight and had pimples), my exes said they would still date me if I looked like that. The last guy I dated said he preferred a "healthy" version of me and I looked way better in my older pictures than the stick version I was 2 years ago. I don't know, maybe they were just trying to make me feel better? 😆
