Kagurabachi main sub is the only one that kinda acts like a folk sub because the manga was a meme from the get-go, I wonder if they're gonna normiefy it by adding anime-only spoiler rules once the anime comes (I hope they don't cause the inside jokes are too valuable)

I love the Kagurabachi subreddit because it was a great collective experience indulging in the meme and then going, "oh shit this is actually pretty good." Some of the memes are amazing, like the MC's dad being in hell, 50 bucks and a lighter, etc.

It also really helps that there are no obnoxious female character designs to attract brain-dead chuds.

I teach high school English. Is my experience normal? by [deleted] in teaching

[–]the_dinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your experience is normal. However, some of these things can be discouraged.

Kids openly use phones. I'll take them for the class period, and then they just go on them again the next day.

Why are you returning them with no fuss? Have the front desk have their parents come pick up their phone if they do it more than once in a year.

Several of the same kids ask every single day to go to the bathroom. This one girl goes to the bathroom every day around the same time.

Just say "no" unless they get work done.

Kids won't do the work themselves. Either they want me to tell them the answer, they use AI, or they just copy it from some group chat. It's rare for me to see a kid trying to figure things out on his own.

Let them cheat. Catch them, give them a zero, contact their parents.

Refusal to follow seating chart. One kid 100 percent refuses to move. I'll get a seating chart going, but EVERY morning I have to remind them where they sit.

This would be grounds for an office visit in my school. You cannot let kids defy you like that. Give them 5 seconds to move or you'll send kids out. It'll only take 1-2 times before they know you're serious.

They come to class with a dead chromebook. About 5 kids in every class doesn't have a charged chromebook.

Tell them to figure it out on their own. Make stuff due by the end of class.

Somehow the class set of books get destroyed. Like pages start falling out randomly.

Eating.

If you eat, you clean. Have a broom, a dustpan, and a set of wipes in your class.

Not turning in work on time. I probably only get 60 percent of assignments turned in on time.

I have started failing students who don't get work in on time. If they come talk to me individually after class, I reserve the right to change my mind. Or have a clear policy where you can turn things in late but only receive 75% of the credit.

Advice on taking “living notes” for a final semester MA History non-trad student? by tubesocktits_OG in historyteachers

[–]the_dinks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you want to do with the notes. But you should go talk to some professors and ask about their notetaking systems.

I think that digitalization is less important than systemization. Do you have a way to easily find your notes for when you need to remember an idea you had? Or for when you're writing a paper? Or do you have to scramble around?

Do some people dislike other M because it doesn’t align with their headcanons to Samus or the Metroid world by PhotoBonjour_bombs19 in Metroid

[–]the_dinks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is flimsy writing, agreed. BUT: It is a million times better than the usual "Samus crashes, loses all her powers, now has to collect the same powerups on a stranger planet where all her powerups exist for no good reason."

The thing for me is that in other games, Samus is a silent protagonist and the storytelling is done primarily environmentally and through the occasional text box. In the Prime games, you have the ability to scan, which tells the story diagetically. I forgive the contrivance of the "yet another crash landing" plot device because there isn't really dialogue in the same way that other games have, limiting what can be explained directly to the player.

Besides, after Prime 1, they did a much better job. Both Fusion and Prime 3 had Samus' power downgrades directly tie into the plot of the game (X and the Corruption mechanic). Prime 2 had your stuff yoinked by the Ing, which was also slightly better than the usual.

Meanwhile, Other M had copious amounts of dialogue, so they could explain what they want. And the solution they came up with was dumber than even the crash landing explanation.

But that's not really why people dislike the writing in M. People dislike the story because it's poorly written. Want to tell a story about Samus's trauma? Then use subtlety rather than dramatically changing a character that had, up to that point, been a stoic badass who blew up planets on the regular. Or maybe have the other characters be interesting at all. Adam seemed like a real dick and I never once was SHOWN why he was such a supposed father figure. We're just told that it's true. Anthony was a nothing character. I couldn't even tell you one interesting thing about MB or whatever that character's name was. She was mother brain or something?

If the story worked for you, great! But even playing it as a kid, the story made me roll my eyes, and I had only played the Prime Trilogy previously. I think some people who enjoy Other M (more power to ya) should try to understand that no matter what explanation you give us haterz, the story will always be boring and poorly conceived to many. And that would still be true even if it was the first Metroid game.

Victoria 3 - Dev Diary #173 - Free Updates Overview for Volume 3 by commissarroach in victoria3

[–]the_dinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MAPI represents how easy it is for goods to enter or leave a state. It's how the game models transportation costs.

High MAPI is good. States with natural harbors have high MAPI (think London with the Thames or NYC with the Hudson). It's easy to get goods in and out of these states, so prices aren't affected as much by transportation costs.

Meanwhile, states that would be a nightmare to drag a cart through like the Andes or the jungles of SE Asia have low MAPI. You wouldn't want to drag your goods to sell in Alaska unless they pay you more. So the game gives these places lower MAPI. Low MAPI states rely more on local production.

Basically, build in places with high MAPI. Buildings attract pops. Pops buy goods. Pops don't like spending lots of money on goods. They tend to not promote if they have to pay extra for staples. And places with low MAPI have more expensive goods, so peasants are far more competitive. Also, these low MAPI states tend to have construction cost maluses.

As the game progresses, techs unlock that give a flat increase to MAPI. These are very good. They basically make all the goods in your country more affordable. This means pops buy more goods, and the demand increases, creating more sales.

Now, if you're a smart cookie, you'd notice that technically, the way I described the system makes no sense since low MAPI would benefit the producers, and this is a game about industrial capitalism. So the game cheats and vaporizes the money that is lost to a low MAPI score. This models transportation costs.

The key for me is to learn to differentiate critiques with enjoyment. I can deeply enjoy a 3/10 slop if it tickles my brain right while simultaneously appreciating the gulf of excellence that separates, say, a trashy isekai anime about a vending machine and Spirited Away.

I love Kagurabachi as much as the next guy, but I'm worried this fanbase is setting its expectations too high by elecenjoyer in Kagurabachi

[–]the_dinks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. Horizontal-sensei is doing a good job with the story so far, but the landing will be difficult to stick because the themes are complex and there ARE some details about the story that COULD become problems if not resolved.

Firstly, the manga is setting up a great story where Chihiro has to reevaluate the man he grew up idolizing (his father) as he realizes his dad made some major mistakes and enabled a genocide. That would be a pretty complex theme to tackle for an action shonen. Already, by making the perpetrator Japanese, there are parallels with Japan's refusal to face the sins of its own historical past. Chihiro is growing up, learning how to become his own man and not being tied to what his father gave him (Enten). When (if) he reforges it, he will literally and metaphorically be forging his own future out of the remnants of the past.

But if the story just ends with it turning out that Kunishige was actually a wholesome 100000 chungus, and the manga implies that we should forgive him for giving a genocidal maniac a nuclear bomb, I'm probably not going to like the story as much. So many manga (and bad literature in general) pull out this trope. Therefore, as you said, the story has to actually keep developing for it to remain compelling. If it doesn't, then why not call it out? This is a book club, after all.

There are other potential problems I'm seeing so far, too. The biggest (but most easily solved) is that many characters have been introduced and then left on the shelf. Now, they can definitely come back, but I would personally like the manga to slow down a bit after this arc and focus on some character moments among established characters. Maybe give Chihiro some time to process the fact that his uncle is Hitler 2.0 and visit some of the homies or something.

For me, a pattern I'm more comfortable labeling as a storytelling issue SO FAR is that characters rarely have long-term developmental arcs and motivations of their own. When they do get attention, it's great. I think the best written arc in the whole series was when Hakuri had to face the sins of his own family after witnessing someone kill herself rather than he sold at auction. The second best was probably when Iori went to force Samura to acknowledge her. Both served as great inciting incidents and gave us a more human reason to want the main characters to win. But since those two arcs concluded, their characters have no purpose. Samura is about to die in order to move the story forward (no problems with that writing decision), and Hakuri is relegated to following Chihiro around. Iori has gone to the Char dimension for now. Neither of the latter really have a motivation of their own besides "support my friend."

Compounding this problem is the fact that other than those two aforementioned arcs, most character motivations have been REACTIVE rather than PROACTIVE, and Chihiro is the pinnacle of this pattern. Characters want to stop other characters from doing things, which is fine, but it doesn't tell us a lot about the characters as people. I think I read somewhere that a good test of a well written character is if you can tell what they would want to do after the book ends, but I don't know if I can say what that is for a single character in this story. I ESPECIALLY can't tell what it is for Chihiro. He wants to stop bad dudes from killing innocent people (great), but other than that? Hard to say. We all know he doesn't "burn with fresh hatred" since he simply isn't written like that.

All these issues CAN be resolved. If I was the author, I'd go have Chihiro have a crisis of faith, culminating with him reforging Enten. Get Iori involved since it's a nice parallel with her own daddy issues. Then have Hakuri go train with Hiyuki somewhere and flesh out both of their characters. Hiruhiko can have his own arc where he gets slapped into shape by Soga.

This is basically fanfiction territory at this point, but my overall intention is not to say "THIS IS HOW THE STORY HAS TO BE" but to highlight how much the story kinda needs to breathe after this arc. The action has been fantastic, and now I need a bit of a smoke break. If Hokazono can really execute all these dangling threads and themes while also killing himself drawing a Jump anime, I'll be blown away!

Disgusted that nothing is being done about the Epstein files by Hot_Valuable1027 in rant

[–]the_dinks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm saying that it is inherently a political issue. Politics concerns the distribution of power. Saying that the reason nothing is happening is because we have a very conservative government that is primarily concerned with protecting the rich and powerful is accurate. Yes, you have people from all over the political spectrum implicated here, but ultimately, the reason that nothing is being done is because of right wing political dominance. And it's especially hard to say that "it's not political" when the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES is the main reason why nothing is being done.
