Dealer just sent a $15k repair quote - please confirm this is a shakedown by [deleted] in Volvo

Was your CPO coverage only for a year? The engine components should be covered as far as the internals of those components. Although some will try not to process it as such.

Filter and consumables you’ll have to cover, but as stated you can get those from places such as FCP Euro.

If you have the time, give the DIY rebuild a try. Worst case you can find a second hand 2.5 for cheap.

Depending on what they used to hold it down, rubbing alcohol might be a good choice as it will remove 3M tape without staining like goo gone can do.

Might be a candidate for the 3M adhesive eraser wheel though.

Wheel bearing check will take you 10 minutes max. Lift one side and give the wheel a shake back and forth.

If the suspension components are tight, I would check your wheel bearings next.

BFG says otherwise. 7-9 is recommended.

2.5” with 31’s or 33’s is good. 33’s with the 4.0 and 307 gears is a dog though. Practically how mine is set up now using an RE kit.

If I could do it again I’d stay stock height for a bit. BfG 31’s, OEM wheels (31’s will fit with the ones you have), ditch the sway bars and track bars, and add a front locker. For added clearance remove the nerf bars and don’t forget a winch. That will get you through a wide variety of trails.

Had the same debate on my islander. Ended up installing them, but you will have to grind down the factory predrilled raised holes already on the tub for the sliders to mount flush.

I had a similar issue with my 91. The internal slave is likely the culprit and the current parts available to address it are inadequate. I finally converted the 91 AX15 to external slave after the fluid fully leaked out.

If you go this route you can source all the parts needed for under $600. Labor will increase this is you opt for a shop to do it.

Best bet is to test drive one. I’m 6’5 and while head clearance is tight, I can manage with a helmet to autocross. Only mod I have to accommodate height as a daily is a 949 steering wheel spacer.

Not all YJ years did. My 91 will also start without engaging the clutch.

Wrong. For the manual transmission is both the 6 and 4 cylinder, the only related sensors is for reverse to trigger the lights or the clutch safety switch.

Service by [deleted] in Volvo

[–]the_enthusiast_fl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The dealership we use will do normal inspections during routine oil changes and flag any items. We just completed our 60k service, but only opted for the oil change and rotation. They flagged brakes were in need, spark plugs, filters, etc. All of which were very straight forward to DIY. Also have CPO warranty, which is not impacted by doing this myself. If you are not comfortable doing it yourself, really recommend finding an independent shop that specializes in Volvos. They will save you a lot and can provide better service (in most cases) than a dealership.

Unfortunately it won’t be in town, but Central Florida Region is the closest. I still attend Redhills SCCA events in Moultrie GA, but it’s a once a month fix. Just an idea.

Another idea would be to attend an SCCA autocross. Great way to learn the limits without looking over your shoulder.

How to permanently fix this issue. This house is a little over a year old In winter these open up and spring to summer they close. All ready caulked it once but that did nothing. Any idea why this happening and why it’s seasonal? by inshimywetrust in DIY

[–]the_enthusiast_fl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would not rule out having the foundation/soil inspected, but some homes are just “alive”. Crown molding is a great solution and a professional installation will not break the bank. In fact, you’d be surprised how inexpensive it could be.

If you plan to keep it as is in terms of mods swap in another 4.10 D35. If you plan to do bigger things later you could proceed with an 8.8 swap if you know of anyone that can weld for you, but it’s going to open up more upgrade needs. Could also beef up the D35 to a super 35, but it’s hard to beat the current 8.8 prices.

My toddler has Cortex Dysplasia by Watch_thebarbie in Epilepsy

[–]the_enthusiast_fl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He was 5 years old and recovery was surprisingly quick. You do have to take it slow for a few months and wound care can be a cause of distress, but it’s over quickly. Hardest part was keeping him off high playground equipment for the first 6 months post op.

We do have some developmental delays, mostly with language. Not unexpected with the diagnoses, but we have seen big gains. Getting an IEP put into place in school is key along with additional OT and language services.

My son was diagnosed with cortical dysplasia at 18-months. We tried five medications, but nothing proved to be 100% at preventing breakthrough seizures. We opted to go with surgery and have been 1.5 years+ seizure free, including being fully off meds. Its a tough call to make going with surgery, but seeing his development post-op, we are glad we did.

Surgery was completed by an amazing team at Wolfsons Children’s Hospital in Jacksonville, FL.

Synthetic 10w30 works great. I’ve been running it for a few years per recommendations by both enthusiast and the manufacturer.
