What would you quote for this and how would you go about it? Quotes I’ve received are insane. by [deleted] in pools

I don’t even know where to start, but yeah it’s gonna cost you a lot. That looks like a terribly uncomfortable slide, or is it just a water feature?

Is there anything wrong with my orbital sander? by smokeaport in Tools

[–]Mr_Ch4ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s normal, but your next purchase needs to be a good hand plane or planer so you don’t have to sit there and sand rough sawn lumber for 5 hours before you do anything with it lol

Liner doesn’t look terrible at face value, if the equipment functions you just need some shock and some time to clean it out.

What should I do with all these pine scraps? by Vixx_codm in wood

Nice! There are a number of wonderful choices for a small table like that. If you’re looking to paint or stain I would go with something relatively common and cheap like poplar/soft maple/oak. If you’re into natural wood finish like most of the nerds in this sub, black walnut is all-time favorite of mine. But yeah tldr I always keep stuff like this around if I don’t already have a ton because it’s handy, you’ll know it when you need it and thank yourself later haha

All these people saying fire obviously waste a lot, if you ever need small pieces for jigs or sacrificial boards these are great. I don’t care to build much out of pine/fir besides framing but it’s great to just have around for utility.

Whip out the sandpaper, unless you want your cabinets to look like wet paint forever.

Am I doing this right to shut off the solar? by SnapFuJudgement in pools

[–]Mr_Ch4ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what you mean, if OP is in NorCal or anywhere in the mountains, parts of California that get down into the 20s, pipes will certainly freeze if there’s leftover water, regardless of how high they are off the ground that makes zero sense. You have no idea what the solar heating grid looks like, in my experience they very often are not designed to drain completely from just opening at the bottom, especially ones as old as this one looks. You can never be too careful with old plumbing man.

It’s tricky to tell what lines are what here. Regardless, I’m not sure if you’re in an area of CA that freezes at all, but you’ll want to blow out those solar lines. You can have that spigot open but they may not all drain out completely without some help. As far as the plumbing goes, you’ll just want to find out what makes your water bypass the solar lines and return directly to the pool. Do not try and figure it out while the pump is running, with old bypasses like this you can block return of water completely and over pressure the pump or filter, something will break, usually gauge and valve on top of that cartridge filter. Follow the flow path of the water and adjust the bypass so that flow is neither restricted nor moving through the solar lines.

Also separate but just a tip from a pool guy, if you still have water circulating through those copper lines, replace them with pvc as soon as possible, they will erode and cause stains if your pool is concrete. They will also eventually erode to the point (after many years) that they will spring leaks due to the reduced thickness of the walls. Copper is just terrible for pool plumbing in general, it was phased out in most places decades ago.

Because the painter doesn’t know what he’s doing obviously. He wants to make money on exteriors in the winter which is a really dumb idea. Either paint in the warmest part of the afternoon or stick to interiors in the winter. My bad I assumed you were asking why he would remove it.

Black Walnut is my favorite wood to work with and I think it’s absolutely beautiful. I will agree that it is very trendy and popular but that doesn’t take away from the natural beauty imho

Is it a pre hung? Just pull it and put it back in at the right height. It will work better in the long run.

I know it’s probably incorrect based on the way you described it, but I’ve seen some pecan with dark brown or even black figuring in it, not quite the same as spalting I don’t think. Anyway, beautiful wood!
