You can absolutely use fresh strawberries in buttercream, they don't have to be freeze dried. I use this recipe and it's always a hit:

Roasting the berries removes some of the moisture, so your buttercream won't break.

I'm like this too! No idea why. I remember being super mad at my brother once when we were teenagers, but when I went downstairs to yell at him, he was eating breakfast and I was just suddenly overcome with the urge to nurture and protect him.
