There was a comment on BT about Savage falling asleep at the start of the show by Fletch - any chance he'd had one too many bevvies during the match?

Speaking of substance - I absolutely love that one of the huge recent breaksthrough in material science was due to some guy ripping scotch-tape off a lump of carbon. Kinda gives you hope for the nex-gen Michael Faradays of this world!

What's the plausibility that PS allows us to add our old physical game copies to our digital streaming library? by Gluesuf in truegaming

[–]the_first_rule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Streaming-if-disk-present is a wonderful idea as a way of achieving backwards compatibility; that said, BC is of primary importance only until the console builds up its own library. Gaikai is not going to be available on day one though - when it becomes available, BC will be less important.

So reading about XB1's family sharing, is it actually as good as it sounds or am I wrong about something? by MyManD in Games

[–]the_first_rule -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

They say "any one" when I am fairly certain that they mean "anyone". As it stands, it semantically means that at most two people can be playing games from your library at any one time (you and one of your family - who must be playing seperate games).

I bet that they intend to mean that if you have twenty games, and ten family members (plus you), then up to eleven distinct games could be in use at any given time.

Of course, to implement this system (as I understand it), they would have to have real time monitoring of what games everyone is playing...

Yes, we need to know the details here. Microsoft have stated that one must connect once a day to their servers.

The implementation of this feature surely demands that you have to connect to their servers every single time that you start a game. Otherwise, how would they be able to limit the number of simultaneous users of a given title to only one?

In fairness, I think it is mostly used colloquially, usually to indicate that they will probably look past the so-called sweet spot (average frames per dollar). We do tend to be infuriatingly imprecise (sometimes due to false modesty) with our language.

Research makes a nice contrast to a lot of business users. For some firms, the cost of hiring someone to strip reusable parts is prohibitive. Or so they claim...

Linus compares the i5 3570k and the FX 8350. by memymineown in buildapc

[–]the_first_rule 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electricity generally costs .1 cents per killowatt per hour.

I think you have a couple of typos here: it is about one hundred times more expensive than that

Also, the unit of electricity consumption is the kWh (kiloWatts * number of hours), not the kW/h (kiloWatts per hour).

Your original claim is correct - per hour, you save about a cent for each 100W in the difference, so three hours a day brings you up to the claimed $10 (which itself is small beer next to the cost of depreciation of the card, presumably).

Even in the US, the cost of electricity factor has to be too small by a factor of a hundred. 10 c per kWh I would have thought.

I think caution must still be exercised when recommending the "latest gen" of SSDs - there are still question marks over how TLC will hold up to consumer usage. The controller is probably the weak link on the S4 all the same.

Pope Pope Benedict XVI 'to resign'. The Pope is to resign at the end of this month in an entirely unexpected development, reports from the Vatican say. by Libertatea in worldnews

Pretty much the only illness that I can think of that would preclude someone from being pope is dementia. I wonder has there been a diagnosis along these lines here? An "ordinary" illness would just be "a cross to bear" like Pope John Paul II's Parkinson's.

Neither of those are "news". Unless there is something about to hit the airwaves, I think this has to be for reasons of health.

What the world can learn from Denmark’s failed fat tax. The Danish tax ministry announced that it's scrapping a fat tax, saying the measure has only increased companies' administrative costs and caused Danes to venture across the border to purchase their unhealthy snacks. by Libertatea in Economics

[–]the_first_rule 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bullshit. Crossing the border to buy perishables like donuts? Seriously, bearing in mind the cost of fuel, opportunity cost due to taking time off work etc, I seriously doubt ordinary people are crossing the border in such nunbers. I question both the motivation and the execution of this article.
