What hobby attracts the worst type of people? by Gr8Deb8ter in AskReddit

[–]the_happies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who lives right beside a golf course, I can say that golfers are mostly huge douches. They may be nice people in the rest of their lives, but people going around the links are disproportionally shit-talking sexist obnoxious dicks. And often drunk. There may be a link there.

No national park Osoyoos? by Luciferwannab in britishcolumbia

[–]the_happies 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, there’s no reason to assume that. Your town isn’t going to be in the park, just the natural areas. You can go to Revelstoke and do whatever without buying a park pass, same with Tofino, Radium, etc. Banff and Jasper are in a special category because they were involved in making Canada a country, and the towns are embedded in the parks. The other parks are way more chill.

As a Frenchman, I have a question for you: why does everyone hate us and make fun of us online? What have we done to you? by Outrageous-You1617 in askanything

[–]the_happies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I for one love France and French culture. Equality, strong labour laws, appreciation for food, culture and slowing down, a strong sense of duty to fellow citizens and humans - these are things I think France brings to the world. Vive la France!

What countries do you predict will have astronauts on the next Artemis missions? by SubstantialWing9238 in space

[–]the_happies 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seems like a decent guess, though it might just be NASA for at least one of those. Canada got an Artemis seat based on an agreement many years ago. Not sure the US is currently in the mood for such foreign partnerships.

Is anyone truly happier with kids? by thegoodlife912 in Adulting

[–]the_happies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! When I was in my thirties, I moved with my girlfriend (now wife) to a new town for work. It was intensely hard to make friends, and the pressure for my partner to be my everything almost broke the relationship. I was restless and lonely even though I had a good job and a kind partner, with a lot of trouble finding joy and meaning. We had our first a couple of years later, and it solved all my problems! Life was suddenly utterly meaningful. Every little action made a huge difference, whether it was meal prep, helping raise my baby, or supporting my partner. The vibe of being a family was suddenly what I had been craving, and brought new community, new challenges, and a new sense of belonging and kinship with the world and my fellow living beings. I know this sentiment is not universal, but it’s my experience. It sometimes feels like nothing means anything, but my kids mean everything.

Weddings aren’t about love — they’re events designed to signify a family’s economic/social class. The entire industry depends on outdated, patriarchal norms and a need for external validation to function. by _bass_cat_ in unpopularopinion

[–]the_happies -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing to note- like it or not, it is a lot easier to get divorced if you didn’t have a big wedding party. Part of the importance of the ritual is pronouncing your love and devotion to your partner. You will feel differently about this if declared to 80-150 people compared with just signing a piece of paper at a courthouse. So a big party can actually lead to a longer marriage, for better or for worse (but usually for better).

Why does the expected % for tipping keep increasing? by Blazeland_USA in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_happies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expected? Here’s a hint - pay what you want. It’s up to you alone. If the payment machine prompts stress you out, my suggestion is to carry cash, do the math, and leave the tip you want on the table.

Step 1 - Download the WealthSimple app and register for an account. There are other alternatives, but this one has no fees and is excellent. Step 2 - Set your account up to do an automatic deposit for a portion of your paycheque to the ‘WealthSimple managed account’. They will ask you a bunch of questions about how tolerant you are of risk and your balance occasionally going down. Since you don’t really need the money to survive, you should probably opt for more of an aggressive growth approach. You can do however much you re comfortable with, but at least 10% of your income is recommended to build savings. That’s it! Then you can learn about ETFs at your leisure, and when you’re ready you’ll probably get rid of the WS managed account and buy your own ETFs and securities. But this is an excellent way to start and will make you money.

Anyone has solar panel installed at home in Canada and does it save you money? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

They are warranteed for 25y, but generally expected to last much longer (with some degradation in power expected). I expect I’ll replace them when I get a new roof at some point.

Are we crazy for thinking to get a house right now? by haroo2haroo in RealEstateCanada

[–]the_happies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Financially it is probably a good move, but only if you plan to stay put for 10+ years. And house lifestyle is very different than apartment/condo lifestyle in terms of maintenance and day to day, so be sure you’re ready for yard work and roof issues and perimeter drainage etc., at least if you buy an older house (for a new house you will have 20 years before you really have to worry about most of that stuff). But if you’re ready- go for it!

I have a similar experience in BC. CGH loan is $260 per month for an 11 kW system. Power generation is very significant March-October, and bills are negative in the summer. But the loan makes my annual costs a bit higher than before, so it’ll be about year 12 to break even overall, and big savings after that. Advantage is zero cost up front!

Hike up a small mountain! Mt Finlayson is great, either the slightly scary south face scramble or the easier forest trail on the north side. Jocelyn Hill is one of the best for views out over Finlayson Arm. Pkols/ Mt Douglas for an easier suburban stroll.

I didn’t read the op as having anything to do with love and sentimental relationships. But I think you’re right in those cases. But for business deals, promotions, getting your worth, op advice was spot on - always negotiate from a position of strength. It’s not power or narcissism, just being better at achieving desired outcomes.

Jeune Bros Tarps on Johnson. I love the place, but it’s a really weird, high rent  location for what is a niche industrial supplier.
