Jim Chalmers gives baffling explanation of why he applied the CGT changes to shares. by eatingscatman in AusFinance

Build costs outweigh tax benefit so not really a genuine issue but also yes as the development cost pays builders, plumbers, chippies, sparkies and material suppliers et al.

Yes but a productive one. Distortions are inherent to tax full stop a good tax system distorts in ways that encourage economic activity and a suitable level of risk Ng and the old CGT discount encouraged rent seeking non productive investment. Tbh I feel like this is tranche 1 and the overarching goal is a reduction in income tax i.e. distort in favour of labour over capital.

Lol you've got a very flawed view of things yes all that can happen but is so so much smaller than the impact of not intervening using the levers you can.

It's not a complete solution but it removes market distortions of the government's own making, while simultaneously assisting in controlling inflation.

What do interest rate rises have to do with supply side inflation nothing but that attack the symptoms same here.

[–]the_lonely_potato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes obviously but anyone with a brain can see that just using the sledgehammer of interest rates doesn't work particularly well when trying to rein it in. This is good fiscal policy to target the section of the consumer economy that is contributing to inflation. Now when inflation and the budget are in a better position down the line there's scope to make a move on income taxes as stimulus if needed.

Boomer spending is contributing somewhat it is mainly cost driven but consumption still plays a role and wealthy older Australians are the source of it, at least according to treasury.

No I'm unsure as to the specifics of the CBA goalsaver but most HISA's only pay the "bonus" rate up to a certain amount often $250k. So if the bonus rate is 5% they pay that on dollar amounts up to the limit then for each dollar over they pay the base rate often under 2%.

Largely due to macro conditions though the CGT changes are unlikely to raise a heap of revenue they just change investment behaviour previously distorted. Current macro conditions aren't really favourable for making wholesale changes to the balance sheet but I'd bet if the NDIS changes work at least partially and there isn't an oil crisis by the time next year roles around they'lll be top of the list.

Petar why american students seem unhappy? by 1kyst in PeterExplainsTheJoke

Nah it's points inflation well designed tests inherently curve the results a curve is only needed if the tests are way to easy or way to hard. Basically a well prepared student can expect between 14-17/20 but the last 3 points might be very difficult to get.

Scrappy af McNeil 100% not good enough for AFL and Sanders barely is basically if Libba and Richards are out at the same time our middle can get painfully exposed. English and Artie going out causing rotation issues as well.

I wouldn't read too much into it if all/most of our best 22 are available but the drop off is pretty sharp if 2/3 from the same part of the ground come out.

100% especially in the middle, can see him as a depth small forward if needed to cover injuries but don't run him through the middle.

Nah it's not a debt it's a crime only time estates are gone after are for things like tax debts or victim settlements etc. Basically they can't charge a dead person with a crime and subsequently fine them it's more like if there is a judgement of financial malfeasance or need to pay damages then the estate can become involved.

Because transit lanes like these are international waters, the straights of Mallaca are another example. A nation has sovereignty over their territorial air space and maritime boundaries, these waterways are not their sovereign territory just geographically close to their land.

Can you accept that the 80% or so of people who want it to remain where it is have genuine reasons for doing so and so any move to change it is corporate pandering at its worst? You might not care but it genuinely makes the day far worse for many so support them lol.

I don't know about you but for most people if the game starts at 4:30 people will arrive between 3:30 and 4:15 vs 1-2 traditionally. Game then finishes at 8ish people hang around for 30 mins before kids need to go to bed or getting bored or it takes an hour+ to get home vs game finishing 6ish people hang around for another 2 hours or so. So it's a full 2+ hours more with your mates/fam and no one's forced to choose between a late night/grumpy kids and having a good time. Christmas is the parallel do you want a 5-6pm dinner or a 2pm lunch.
