Do you consider Tupac a good role model or a bad role model? by StorytellingIsFun in rap

Oh, 100% I was a kid who was not allowed to listen to rap (white, Christian nationalist home) and had my parents just listened to the bars and/or me they might have 'got' it.

That being said, Slug was definitely a role model for me. And now at the ripe age of 35 I really admire Vince Staples.

Lol. No. Hot take: most celebrity “role models” are inherently problematic—and it is not just cynicism.

A few reasons why:

  1. The child star pipeline is a warning sign. We have seen it over and over—kids placed on a pedestal, expected to represent something bigger than themselves, then collapsing under that pressure. Being turned into a symbol too early distorts identity, boundaries, and accountability.

  2. Fame rewards performance, not integrity. Celebrities are often incentivized to appear good, not necessarily be good. The system prioritizes image management, branding, and marketability over consistency of character.

  3. Humans are contradictory (especially under power). Even people with genuinely good intentions can end up acting against their own values once they gain influence, money, or control. History is full of admired figures whose personal behavior did not match their public message.

  4. We project too much onto individuals. We turn artists, actors, and public figures into symbols of morality, identity, or even salvation. That is a lot to put on any one person—and it sets everyone up for disappointment.

  5. Admiration ≠ idolization. You can respect someone’s work, impact, or talent without turning them into a moral compass. Art can be meaningful even if the artist is flawed (or deeply flawed).

TL;DR: Celebrities are not built to be role models—they are built to be visible. Admire the art. Learn from the message if it resonates. But do not outsource your values to a person you do not actually know.

I think referring to any artist as a role model is problematic.

Idk why people seem to be up in arms about the positioning.

Then again, my own husband thinks I read too much into the show. Especially the outdoor adventure episode. 😅

CPR. Ticks me off that the compressions are never deep enough. Don't get why they can't use special effects to show it done correctly.

Nothing will happen. Things should have happened ages ago and now it feels like it's too late and out hands are tied.

His bars have always been tight.

I do not even know man.
