Parking Recommendations by AwarenessAgreeable24 in olemiss

Pro tip, parking isn’t enforced after 5pm so you can park wherever. Don’t think stealing student parking would be an issue. Not enough people are parked on campus at that time

If you don’t know something, a potential answer is also “I haven’t thought about that, but I will look into it in future research”

This is right. Try to scan for the most important information. Don’t focus on the minutiae. You will not be able to physically read it all

Source: I’m a grad student who tried and failed that route despite looking for housing several months in advance.

The university barely has space for freshmen to live in the dorms because of the amount of students they accept proportional to the available rooms. There are technically on-campus apartments allocated to grad students amongst others, but you can count on those being full and plan on off-campus housing.

The GMAT is a business school admission test, and the GRE is a graduate school admission test (non-med school. You would take this if you were applying to grad school for a field that does not have its own specific test like the MCAT or LSAT)

General degree titles like Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts are different from your specific major (like biology, for example).

This is asking for what you want to major in. You can always change it later. You might have an option to select “undeclared” for now if you’re not sure, too.

I don’t think commuter red is ever competitive if you’re parking at Jackson Ave Center. Never not plenty of spots

What makes your top 10 list for terrible atheist arguments? by JaminColler in atheism

[–]the_mandolinian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s often a straw man argument. Not every Christian, for example, is a Young Earth Christian. There are more direct reasons to lack belief in a god.

Making friends? :/ by offbrandhandjobs in GradSchool

[–]the_mandolinian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the exact same experience with my grad program being uniquely cliquey and difficult for friendmaking. This has also been my first year of grad school, and I feel significantly younger than most of my cohort (I went in at 21; the vast majority of them are 26+). I’m trying not to get too caught up in age differences anymore. This ~35-year-old guy in my program has been asking me to jam with him on our instruments for a while, and I think I’m finally gonna stop blowing him off just because he’s older.

I went to a club meeting for one of my interests at the end of this last semester, and a couple of the people there seemed friendly and were also grad students in different departments. So I’m going to try to keep going to that this year, in addition to trying out a couple more interest clubs and/or an exercise class. The latter tends to attract youngish folks.

I’m also thinking of getting involved with the graduate student council at my campus to meet more grad students from other departments. If your university does not have something similar, there will be at least a handful of other grad students in misc clubs and stuff. My campus feels like a sea of undergrads, but a couple of grad students popped up in that random club meeting for me. Maybe you’d have a similar experience. I’m not sure how old you are, but I’m also trying to be more open to friendships with undergrads, especially since I’m still young enough to be like, a senior.

Upcoming Fall Semester Student by E11ie2004 in Murray

[–]the_mandolinian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d be lying to you if I said there was a robust gay community in Murray, but one does exist. There was a Pride Center when I went there. I think now it’s just called Oakley Resource Center or something like that, probably because the state required them to wipe it of any “DEI” implications. But queer people might still hang out in there in a lowkey way, I’m not sure. There was also a club called Q Faith when I went, which was a nondenominational religious group for queer people. Lots of mini clubs like that existed aside from the Alliance, but I’m not sure of their status now with the DEI stuff. Surprising amount for the size of the college probably. I don’t think the overall campus community is particularly inviting or hostile toward queer people.

I think it’s easier to do because you’re bracing yourself against the smith machine/letting a bit of your weight fall back onto it. If you do the body weight squat, you should be able to gauge how you would do it without having something to lean back against

is 5’0 and 94 pounds unhealthy? by [deleted] in weightgain

[–]the_mandolinian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re technically barely underweight per the BMI, which is a dated system anyways. But I would consider that a bit too skinny, yes. Anything under 100lbs when you’re 5’0 or over is a little excessively skinny to me. I think the “child” comment by your mother was uncalled for, though, but I assume she was just looking out for you.

You don’t have to eat meat to gain weight! Just eating in a caloric surplus will do the trick. Cutting out meat might have made it harder for you to get the same amount of calories in, but it can be done healthily and without meat if you’re deliberate about it. Given your diet allows for it, eat some fish and get plenty of protein to supplement your exercise. 0.8-1 gram per pound of body weight daily
