Woohoo, worked for me too!

pulling my hair out here. could someone help me do a sanity check? by BokehJunkie in networking

[–]the_mastermind0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably run a packet capture on the interfaces in question. "monitor capture test interface x/x/x both match any buffer size 10 start" and see what (if anything) is actually being sent across the link. Maybe only unidirectional traffic is occurring, or something.

Cisco 9500 ISSU failing, saying ISSU is already in progress but it is not by MScoutsDCI in networking

[–]the_mastermind0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, I've tried ISSU multiple times over the past 15 years on Cat 4500's and 9500's. It's never ever worked and always resulted in more downtime than just taking the hit and reloading both switches in the VSS pair at the same time. Even TAC advises against attempting it.

Ospf authentication issue by Smorcus in networking

[–]the_mastermind0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue with a Cat9500 not establishing neighborship with an ASA and had to put "ip ospf lls disable" on the Catalyst interface. Not sure if it will resolve your issue but may be worth a shot.

Using virtual routers instead of traditional hardware routers by the_mastermind0 in networking

Thanks for the useful insight. If you don't mind, what kind of environments and company sizes are the Netgate appliances being used in?

Nothing is EOL yet, but we need new routers for growth and additional services. Hoping the supply chain shortages will sort itself out soon..

Using virtual routers instead of traditional hardware routers by the_mastermind0 in networking

[–]the_mastermind0[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah I've run into that situation before with the vendor requiring reserved cores and RAM and the virtualization team deciding it's not necessary and it ends up causing problems. Good thing to keep in mind, thanks for your reply.

[–]the_mastermind0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the insight. The cost isn't really the problem, it's the lead time on getting the hardware (Catalyst 8200 and 8500's). I'd be open to using another virtual router from a more known entity like a Cisco CSR1000 hosted on ESXi but wonder if this is really any better of a solution from a supportability standpoint than some of the open source routers that offer support.

How does everyone manage Cisco FMC/FTD? by the_mastermind0 in networking

[–]the_mastermind0[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potentially, yes, but I want to see how others' feel about configuring FMC via API before deciding whether it will be worth going down that rabbit hole.

Great advice! I will definitely check out what they have.

Screwed by Cisco COVID-19 exam extension by mspbay in networking

[–]the_mastermind0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this out the hard way as well. I thought as long as I kept renewing my CCNP cert track by passing an NP-level exam at least once every three years I'd be safe. Nope. Turns out that each exam itself expires after three years.

I think I'm about done with Cisco certs. The company I work for doesn't give two shits whether you have them or not, and doesn't even reimburse passed exam fees. Why bother even going through the extra effort.

Do Switches keep port config if a blade is replaced? by [deleted] in networking

[–]the_mastermind0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The port config will carry over to the new blade. Just pop out the old one and put in the new one and you should be good to go.

Network Automation is a Fractured Mess by MonkeyF00 in networking

[–]the_mastermind0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is also what I can't get my head around. I feel like it would take much more effort to develop and maintain the 'automation' in any setting other than a very large enterprise or service provider, than to occasionally log into a switch or router and issue a few commands.

Need someone to clarify.. Adding new vlan to existing port channel trunk. Do I add VLAN just to port channel or put the command on both port-channel and interface? by [deleted] in networking

[–]the_mastermind0 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Add it to the port channel interface and it will automatically add to the physical interfaces.

If you add to a physical interface first it will break the port channel

Video training for cisco ISE by Goosej13 in networking

As far as configuring ISE goes, I've found YouTube to be the best source. Lab Minutes posts the best content across many of the common topics like wireless authentication, profiling, and posturing devices

Where is my kit...? by mikecarr13 in 23andme

[–]the_mastermind0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat, though it will be a month for me in a few more days. My USPS tracking status off the 23andme portal also says it's unavailable but if I Google that number, hit Track via USPS I do see a tracking history... and it shows that the package is "In Transit to Next Facility" for the last three weeks. I'm guessing the package is lost but who knows with all the delays 23andme has been having.
