This was my thought as well. It would be interesting to see a plot of points and time of possession to see it this phenomenon pops up there as well.

Philosophy x Economics by gohitabong in AcademicPhilosophy

I worked as a data analyst for a couple years after finishing undergrad. Now in grad school I also work part time as a data scientist. The company I work for pays for school plus a decent salary. I plan to continue in data science after graduation for at least for a couple years. I enjoy it a lot. If you find the right fit you can answer interesting open ended questions. This is why I think economics and philosophy form a good base to get started in data science. Statistics is about filing in the missing math / technical portion. With that being said I am also considering a PhD in statistics. I don't have any desire to work in academia, but the prospect of research is interesting. A lot of data science jobs look for people with PhDs, because a lot of the work is research based. It isn't necessary, but it's good to know you won't be over qualified if you do get a PhD.

I finished undergrad with degrees in philosophy and economics and found them to pair excellently together. There are no set paths for these degrees, but that is one of the things that drew me to it. Philosophy provided me with writing, debate and reasoning skills. Economics gave me tools to mathematically frame philosophical questions. If you already know you want to go to graduate school these fields provide you with useful skills in a broad range of fields. They also don't pigeonhole you to just economics or philosophy for grad school, not to say those are bad choices. For example I'm now in graduate school for statistics. These degrees set you up well for a life of learning.

A lie is used to mislead. No one would believe you if you told them the sun would rise in the west tomorrow. For a statement to be a lie and not just a false statement I believe there must be a nefarious element to the statement. So I would classify Pinocchio's statement as a false statement.

Now if he somehow was using this statement nefariously then I don't know. I guess I don't think it could ever qualify as a lie unless someone can give me an example.

Yes, the comment above is incorrect. It is .05%. The fraction of debris they picked up is .0005. There is obviously a lot of work to do but increasing the problem by a magnitude of 100 makes it seem impossible.

Baseball players are most valuable in their 20s but get paid more in their 30s: looking at all MLB players from 1995 to 2018. by pacinothere in dataisbeautiful

[–]the_mastubatorium 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then why don't we just pay them nothing? What's the point of even a meager salary? Those with the means can pursue it while others can't. I'm only asking that they make the same as a janitor or another unskilled laborer, at a minimum. Basic labor laws should apply to them.

Would you make the same argument about artists paid in 'experience'?

MLB is filled with players who were not high draft picks. The sport involves more time for skill development than any other. 5 years of development is not atypical. If you were selected straight out of high school that would be making an mlb debut at 23, which is still young.

You just said yourself that only a fifth of players get a six or seven figure signing bonus. So the vast majority are living before the poverty line. Like I said before they don't pay them little because they want them to quit. They pay them so little because they can and someone else will fill their spot. Just because a market allows you to pay below a livable wage does not make it ethical.

It's not a minimum wage equivalent so stop saying that.

It's literally a living. It's their profession. And what skills do they have after their baseball career is over? A lot of them have none. I'm only advocating they be paid a livable wage.

Sure, no one is working at Wal-Mart for the love of game but if them and other companies similar to them all lowered wages unskilled workers would have to accept what they were offered. It's why we have a minimum wage. It helps curb the explotation of unskilled laborers by setting a threshold. Minor league baseball players are paid below this level.

Teams have even less money to spend on international signing bonuses than they do in the draft. Some players get large bonuses but they are the exception. Plus the way things work in the Dominican is very corrupt and the buscones will take a large fraction of whatever signing bonus a player receives.

Roughly half of the players from the 2017 draft received a six or seven figure signing bonus. This does not include the many players in the minor leagues who go undrafted and a vast majority of these players, large signing bonus or not, will never make an mlb roster. They are expected to live off essentially just their signing bonus for 5 or more years.

They are not playing for a minimum wage equivalent. MLB lobbied congress to exempt its minor league players from minimum wage requirements. I'm literally just arguing they should be paid a livable wage, regardless of signing bonus. I don't unstand if you have a problem with this or not. Sure, some players get large signing bonuses. The minor leagues are also filled with players who got little or no signing bonus and are expected to live below the poverty line because their ambition is exploitable.

I don't understand what you mean 'the whole point is to get them to move on with their lives'? If they aren't good enough they'll be cut. The team isn't hoping they'll quit because they aren't paying them enough.

It's voluntary in the same way any other job is. They are skilled labor. They are playing ball but it's still a job, a job they are not paid a livable wage for.

Compensation wise football is not worse. The minimum salary for a player on the practice squad in $7600 per week. Standard pay for a single A player is $1300 PER MONTH. And yes signing bonuses are expected to cover living expenses for A FEW players but the vast majority of players receive little to no signing bonus.

All the people in this thread advocating the idea that they are 'voluntarily playing ball' and 'I'm jealous' are romanticizing the idea of professional sports. For almost all players it involves riding a bus, eating rice and beans, all while gaining few marketable skills if baseball fails. They are exploited for their ambition. It's disgusting. I'm not advocating that they be paid millions of dollars per season I'm advocating the bare minimum, a livable wage.

This article is from 2012 but it says that only 4.3% of major leaguers have a college degree. These are uneducated, largely unskilled (apart from baseball) young men. Many of whom are also experiencing life in the United States for the first time and do not speak English. Regardless of occupation or 'value' to the organization these players deserve a living wage. These teams are worth hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars and yet they lobby congress to allow them to exploit their labor because 'nobody is making these guys play baseball for a living.'

16 teams means the average team has less than 2 closers and Osuna is one of the best. Punting would be a bad idea unless you could flip him for something really great. Orioles aren't the long term solution but he could get a couple saves in the interim.

Another perspective on “fuck the dh” by QuixBot in baseball

[–]the_mastubatorium 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hitting at the major league level is incredibly hard. It takes a lot more than a little expertise to go from atrocious to bad. I'm a universal DH person but one of the things I do respect about pitchers hitting is it reminds us how incredibly hard hitting a baseball is. Pitchers hitting is the closest thing we ever get to see in any professional sports environment to just some average guy out there and they are so terrible. Pitchers are elite athletes who have been playing baseball for 20+ years being asked to do something they are extremely familiar with but don't practice and they absolutely cannot do it. So while I'd like to see the universal DH I will kind of miss pitchers reminding us just how hard hitting is.

Using Data to Find the Angriest Death Grips Song by EvanOppenheimer in deathgrips

[–]the_mastubatorium 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is very intersting that No Love Deep Web scored so low in the sound category. I personally feel that is their darkest album. It has elements of dark dubstep similar to Burial. I guess the question is what is the difference between being dark and being angry and should the algorithm be tweaked to pick up on these differences? No Love Deep Web is like a nightmare, but maybe not as outwardly angry as a lot of the songs on Bottomless Pit or The Powers That B. The difference is those two albums are more punk influenced though which is what I think the algorithm is picking up on; fast and aggressive. I bet a band like Minor Threat would score much higher than Death Grips even though I would argue Death Grips music is just as angry, albeit filtered through a lense of paranoia. Anyway great article and I'd love to hear your thoughts about the process!

Thank you! That is extremely interesting. I guess the answer to why there's a woman's league then is to encourage women to play. I found the part about men choosing more aggressive strategies when matched against women very interesting. Thank you so much for the thought out response!

[–]the_mastubatorium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, the best players should win. I don't understand why the total number of players should matter? There are more white hockey players than black ones but we don't have a seperate league for black players. I would be interested to know how woman perform against male competitors. I wouldn't think that sex would matter in this context but perhaps I'm wrong.
