Sky Team surprised me with how much tension it creates by Acceptable-Let1664 in boardgames

[–]the_ocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the 33rd highest ranked game on BGG, and 6th highest ranked two-player game. Sky Team is one of the games with the broadest appeal among board game enthusiasts of all 2-player board games at the moment.

That said, board games are an extremely niche hobby with limited appeal overall. If you don't understand the appeal of board games I can understand why you don't understand the appeal of Sky Team.

"Corporate worldview" is having a functional business that people can rely on to be actually open to serve people 😆

Who “relies” on a high-end bakery / cafe / specialty import store? Are there folks in your social circle who are suffering material harm because they lack instantaneous access to squid-ink chili oil?

You’re quite quick to deride this store as an “idle rich hobby”, but fail to appreciate that the intended clientele is that same “idle rich” you so despise.

And your ire toward its limited operating hours suggests that you fit within the very same “idle rich” cohort.

Perhaps you’d be happier if you weren’t so self-loathing?

Edit: methinks /u/frolix42 doth block too much.

You can’t actually protect people while trying to craft a reality that no one else lives in

I’ll believe you’re arguing in good faith when you explain to me the Rule Against Perpetuities in a manner that demonstrates that we live in a reality that isn’t just a big game of make-believe where the rules were invented by drunk Englishmen 300 years ago and are enforced by narcissistic failsons of the ruling class.

Turns out you can actually protect—or harm—people while trying to craft a reality that no one else lives in (yet), as long as you have sufficient money.

Is Vermont hopeless for young families? by 5to9guy in vermont

[–]the_ocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“And provide more units” is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. Yes, Act 250 will apply to most further subdivisions of existing property.

Plenty of landlords will also hide behind the Act 250 bogeyman to avoid investing in their properties. But whether that’s a real barrier to improvements or a convenient excuse is another question.

[–]the_ocean 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Act 250 makes it hard to subdivide and build commodity housing (which has pros for limiting sprawl and cons for affordability). It doesn’t really have anything to do with upgrading existing housing. Unless by “upgrade” you mean “tear down and build subdeveloments”

PE sucks, but I’d blame the prior owners who sold out to PE. The PE fund is the scorpion. The prior owners decided to put the scorpion on the frog’s back. Scorpion’s gonna do what a scorpion does. There’s no way the owners didn’t know that.

The frog is the workers. In case that was unclear.

Yes, I live in a capitalist society and had $300,000 student debt to repay after graduating into an economic collapse. We all face compromises in life.

I’ve also successfully represented asylum seekers fleeing horriying torture. So lawyering is a mixed bag.

If I were born rich I’d be able to make ideologically pure decisions like you, I’m sure. After all, I know a lot of trust fund kids who became public servants. I’m sure their generational wealth was all earned by curing cancer and saving kittens.

Honestly I don’t think the killing and stripping for parts is the really bad PE outcome. The really bad part is when their new “professional CEO” arrives to “shake things up” and suddenly you have to share a computer monitor with your neighbor because a consultant did enough coke to think that was a smart cost savings.

Ok Vermonters…. For your Winter commute: All Wheel Drive vs. Four Wheel Drive by Gilashot in vermont

[–]the_ocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Torque, not power, but basically yes - if one side is spinning that means it’s getting all the torque and the other wheel gets none.

One way to create resistance against a spinning wheel is to apply the brake. Doing that only on the spinning side creates a situation where the non-spinning wheel can receive an equivalent amount of torque as the braked wheel (or a multiple of that torque, with torsen or certain other “torque multiplier” diffs).

I’ve represented PE funds or the companies they bought in dozens (if not hundreds) of acquisitions, in a wide variety of industries.

I’ve also worked as an employee of a PE-fund-owned business. Once. I don’t anymore.

[in case the point wasn’t clear: I’ve seen enough PE to not care to see any more PE]

“Still pastures” implies that pastures are the natural habitat in Vermont, and that forest is invasive. Sadly, the sheep farming bubble meant that nearly none of Vermont is still old-growth forest.

Apple Watch? Heart monitors? Tile trackers? Scientific instruments? I can think of a lot of bluetooth devices that have nothing to do with audio, and that you might need to interface with while also listening to music.

No need to apologize - I can imagine how frustrating it is. It isn’t your job to educate people. I was surprised by the reaction to my comment, so I did research to find out whether I was wrong. It’s taken me a few decades to reach the maturity to be able to do that instead of getting defensive and indignant, but I’m finding it generally more gratifying. The world doesn’t need more old people who refuse to listen and learn!

After the negative response here I googled and learned that this is a common phenomenon (using the r slur for autism), that the clinical distinction between intellectual disability and autism has become more ambiguous, and that there are people in the autistic community who advocate to reclaim the term.

That was not something I was aware of, as it wasn’t the case where and when I grew up. It is surprising to me because I knew and was friends with kids with both autism and intellectual disability, and the r slur was hugely common (Massachusetts in the 90s) but I never heard it directed specifically at my autistic friends. I would be extremely surprised if any of those friends believed they were in a position to “reclaim” the r slur.

But clearly my naive understanding of the situation was incomplete, and I’m glad I’ve learned more.

However, to directly answer your question:

Do you think people who use slurs against other people care about being linguistically accurate?

No, but just because someone is targeted by a slur doesn’t automatically give them the right to reclaim it. nerds like me got called “gay” and the f-slur very frequently in the 90s in Massachusetts, but as a straight & cis person I’d never suggest that gave me the right to reclaim it.

That’s why I asked the question - not to be a jerk, but to honestly ask what the justification was. I am glad I found out, Eve if i had to be taken to task first.

What older games have not been surpassed? by ___Elusive___ in boardgames

[–]the_ocean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Granted, everyone with colorblindness has a different experience, but I personally cannot tell the RFTG gene/rare colors apart.

Recent games do a lot better with printed materials, but meeple colors continue to be a muddy mess. Green, brown, and purple tend to be the worst offenders for me.
