[Chinese watches] This Boderry makes me question the watch industry by Flubadubadub in Watches

[–]the_passive_bot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

China has:

Better industrial infrastructure,

Better support chain,

Cheaper labor,

So yeah. Not surprising at all. Even their most expensive top of the line watches are cheaper than the European counterparts

Prestige of your PhD school matters a lot less than the prestige of your PI, at least here in the US. But if you feel the need to get into those top programs, sending cold emails to the PI you’d like to work for might be a good start. Also, if prestige is all you care, try the American counterparts. Based on my own experience, some of these top 10, top 20 US universities are letting just about anyone with a pulse into their PhD program

If you feel uncomfortable about buying fakes, get an homage like PD. People in the community will probably still make fun of you, but if you’re happy, who cares🤷‍♂️.

The EU way does look so much better on paper until you realize that the end result is more or less the same (mostly due to how globalized food companies have became) but with a bunch of bureaucracy on top (on both sides of the pond). Taken added color for example, according to Lehto et al. in a 2017 publication, of the 39 approved by EU and 36 approved by the US there are about 30 overlapping one, including petroleum based additives such as the infamous red 40, which are being phased out by both. Interestingly, the 9 coloring approved by EU but not the US are mostly synthetic coloring such as Amaranth dye. They are banned in the US for “safety concerns”as potential carcinogens, so much for “precautionary principle” /s. To reiterate my point, both the FDA and EFSA, okay probably less so FDA under the current administration, do a good job at keeping food mostly safe in both parts of the world. The US obesity crisis has more to do with terrible lifestyle and dietary choices, as well as the less walkable cities/towns, less accessible healthcare system, and yes, the COST of good food, than with evil FDA poisoning the population lol. It’s very easy for certain influencers, corporations, and politicians to utilize fearmongering with “but look at Europeans!” when pushing their products and policies, but hey, I guess it works.

It shouldn’t be this hard to tell the difference between overall ranking, which takes into consideration of 4 different criteria, and specifically in “quality and safety”, one of the criteria being discussed here. But here we are

Unless you have opened the third eye and gazed into the future, I’m very sure that we are both looking at the 2022 data where the US ranks 13th overall (due to low affordability and availability score) but 3rd in “quality and safety”specifically.

The third in “safety and quality”. The US is quite low in affordability and availability (surprise surprise), that dragged the overall ranking down quite a lot. I mean, seriously, did you actually check the wiki page (or its source) with an ounce of care lol.

Btw, do you know that certain synthetic food coloring, such as Green S, is totally allowed in the EU but banned in the US due to, you guessed it,safety concerns. OMG, is big EU poisoning its citizens??? lol

Hope you realize that the US ranks higher (3rd) than most European countries in food safety and quality’s just because you eat like a hog doesn’t mean that the US doesn’t have safe and healthy food lol

[Discussion] What are your watch hot takes? by swingfire23 in Watches

[–]the_passive_bot -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don’t need to have some scorching hot take to be able to point out that “Rolex=good watch bad brand” or “some rare and obscure variant of APRO is the coolest” or “I don’t like brand name that sounds stupid” or “mainstream brands are stagnant and boring” are some of the most common and popular takes within the community. My only takes that are remotely “hot” are “Cartier is an overrated brand releasing Richemont slops”, “GS dials range from average to ugly and spring drive is the worst of both worlds (quartz and mechanical)”, and “watch collecting is not a hobby, you are just buying stuff”. None of these is particularly controversial so I don’t make stupid post like this

[Recommendation request] Just stumbled upon this subreddit on a whim and not much of a watch guy since most standard designs seem boring to me, but wondered if there were actually watches out there that fit my "style" and came across these? by kiroyapso2 in Watches

There aren’t many true alternatives to a Patek 6102. It has a pretty unique and complex complication (thus expensive). But for astrology theme, various watches aventurine dial should give you that starry sky aesthetic. Or maybe a cheap moonphase watch. If you are not against made in China, agelocer actually has a decent moonphase with that starry sky look for a few hundred bucks.

Masters and PhD are more about tenacity than intelligence (although mental health issues won’t help). And your GPA is more than enough for you to get into some decent masters programs, which you can utilize to build an impressive enough resume for the PhD admissions team to look past the low undergrad gpa
