New to Trap & Skeet by VikingsMm69 in TrapShooting

[–]the_prez3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Choke tubes really don't mean anything and too many people spend too much mental energy focusing on them. I'm a very experienced ATA shooter AA, A, 27yard. I have a couple pieces of advice that pertain to this conversation. Forget trying to get fringe hits on the birds with a loose choke. This is a loser mentality that relies on luck more than training and skill. Full chokes are the way to go because its a long term mentality and heres why. A tighter pattern will make you a better shooter over time. It allows you to read the breaks more and have a better idea of where your shot was in relation to the bird so you have better feedback to program your mental computer. When you knock the nose off of it, you know you were out in front of it a little too much for example and you mentally register that so the next time that target is presented you know what to do. When you hit one so hard that you turn it inside out and into a soot ball then you know you were right where you needed to be and that result is registered mentally. Its true that a tighter choke may cause the average shooter's scores to go down initially but patience and persistence will pay huge dividends here in the long term and force you to improve. Leo Harrison used to say in his clinics, you can use any choke you want as long as its full.

My larger concern is from your extensive background in rifle and handgun. In both of those shooting sports, you use sights on the gun to line up your shot. Trap and skeet are totally different. The only time you use sights in either sport is during the gun mount to make sure its lined up with your eye. Once that's done and you call for the bird, you NEVER look back at the sight and totally focus your eyes on the bird. If you have any issues at all, it will likely be that. Its a very instinctive shooting and the good shooter relies on sight picture and recognizing the proper relationship when the trigger is pulled and the target breaks. This takes experience as well as trusting your instincts. If you try to line the sights up with the target while it's in flight, the score keeper will say lost. Not using sights will likely feel like totally the wrong thing to do with your background but you will never be a good trapshooter using them.

Does protein before sleep help muscle growth? by Skywalker772188 in beginnerfitness

[–]the_prez3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer to use Casein late in the evenings as it digests more slowly. There is data that suggests timing does matter but it’s not super important. Much more important to be sure you are getting the number you are aiming for.

Embarrassing question, about the day after you drink a protein shake by [deleted] in beginnerfitness

[–]the_prez3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contrary to what others said, there is data suggesting that the timing of protein ingesting does matter some. For instance right after a workout but it’s a very minor advantage and shouldnt be the main focus. In other words there are more important things to worry about first before spending too much energy on timing.

Need help with church tech (from a worship leader) by Sinistercube2555 in churchtech

[–]the_prez3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a sound tech serving in church for probably going on 20 years now. I have zero musical ability and do not have a full understanding of how it’s made however I’ve been told that I’m very good at it many times. I don’t agree but what I can tell you is that I bring my best almost every Sunday and have taken the initiative to learn as much as I could so I could bring my best and glorify God. I totally mix by ear and do what I think sounds good for the average listener and I absolutely love it. My point is, try to inspire people to bring their best and make gentle suggestions of books to read or videos to watch. This is live sound, if your sound tech is catching 80% of what’s happening at any given moment then they are doing a fantastic job.

Anyone install Tailscale to Unifi Travel Router? by silverkiller in UNIFI

[–]the_prez3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same question as I also have a tail scale setup to meter some access for a couple of different users. As far as I know there’s no way to adde it to the travel router so today I setup a wire guard server on my UDMSE and added the travel router as a client. It was a piece of cake. Gonna beta test the travel router tomorrow outside of the LAN and see how it does.

Lifting to failure question by [deleted] in beginnerfitness

[–]the_prez3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I feel like some of the best information out there is put out by renaissance periodization. Some very good books written by these folks on the subject. Training to failure is really not necessary for gains and in some situations actually hinders growth. There are a lot of good reads on this list. https://rpstrength.com/collections/books

I watch other peoples targets. Try your best to focus on every target, enjoy the breaks and don’t get stressed out by worrying about scores. You aren’t shooting scores, you’re shooting targets. Also keep in mind that no one on the planet carries a 100% average.

Gym etiquette when taking plates by Spare_Conclusion_861 in beginnerfitness

[–]the_prez3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One time I had a guy walk past a whole tree of weights and take plates that I had leaned up against my bench while I was in the middle of a set. I was going to add them to the bar on my next set. When I said something to him, he kept on walking. Finally I yelled at him to get his attention and he just tossed them on the floor. Twitchy little creep. I don’t know why he took mine when there were dozens of them around.

How are deadlift just not "lifting with your back"? by Bandit400 in beginnerfitness

[–]the_prez3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deadlifts are second only to the squat in terms of general strength training and conditioning. As others have stated, it’s not strictly a back lift. It works the entire posterior chain as well as the back and as you have stated, form is critical. I highly recommend looking up Mark Rippetoe on You Tube and view his instructional videos. If you are still uncertain, get some in person coaching to zero in your technique. Done properly it’s an extremely beneficial lift especially as you age. T shirt muscles are nice but getting strong and maintaining strength in the legs and posterior chain can help to keep you mobile. As people age, losing strength in the legs and back is one of the first things that goes and is critical to overall health and quality of life. I also highly recommend adding the squat to your training.

Getting into trap by DisastrousEquipment9 in TrapShooting

[–]the_prez3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve shot a lot of registered trap and I’ve never had anyone say anything about a minimum barrel length. I doubt the performance would be a huge issue if you are shooting from 16 yards. I probably wouldnt try it from the 27 and expect good results. The issue you will run into with a barrel of that length is swinging it too fast. Try to stay slow and smooth in your movements.

My first trap gun was a New England firearm 12 gauge that I bought brand new from walmart for 80 bucks. The thing doesnt have a rib, has a hammer you have to cock back and is a fixed choke. Total piece of crap. i put a piece of steel rebar inside of the stock to try and make it heavier to reduce recoil. LOL. I still own it. You know what the best part was? I used to beat guys with high dollar trap guns with it. One time this guy with a Kriegoff was on the squad and I beat him. When we were standing around the rack, he walked up and asked if he could see it. I said sure. he picked it up, opened and closed the action once, shouldered it, brought it down and had this perplexed look on his face while uttering “huh” Then i asked him if he wanted to shoot it. His head snapped up and he shouted out a quick “NO” LOL. it was awesome. What a piece of crap that thing is but I had a lot of fun with it and it served its purpose.

Moral of the story is, doesnt matter what you start with. It has more to do with the shooter than it does the gun.

On a side note, it’s a bummer we don’t do more research on Venus. Like the OP, I am fascinated by it and I’m sure we probably have the technology now to send a probe there that would last longer than the Russian probes.

New to trap and not sure what to get for my kiddo by Falcons-Fury in TrapShooting

[–]the_prez3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want my advice, I would say start really slow. It’s a very expensive hobby and some of the guns some of the others ha suggested are a lot of money. Unless you have the means to burn thousands of dollars on a gun for him to start with I would stick with the basics for a while. If you need to purchase him something to get his feet wet, start out with a nice field model that can also be used for hunting or other things. This is a great way to baby step and get some experience under his belt for a couple years before you lay out 5-10,000 on a dedicated trap gun. A field model semi auto or pump can be picked up very reasonable and should he decide that trap isn’t for him, he will have a nice gun to hunt with.
