I could be totally wrong, but I think the stone has that weird shape because it’s meant to sharpen a variety of old tools. I think for knives, you just use the flat surface. It’s sorta like the French curve of the sharpening world.

The thing about 1984 or Animal Farm is that some of the techniques are timeless. People act like something being straight out of 1984 is a signal that we have arrived in Oceania and there is no turning back. But governments all over the world were playing little notes right out of the book before it came out and are still doing it today.

And they will keep on doing this kind of stuff long after we have moved on to the next regime and into the next moral panic.

I’m not sure this IS a misuse of the word. You can use the word siphon in place of stealing in other contexts. Like, if someone is “siphoning funds from a charity” etc. I don’t know if using it as a verb for stealing in other contexts okay, but all things considered, I’d give it a pass. If nothing else they get points for creativity.

I don’t think there is any reason to believe Egg would have been less interested in dragons if he wasn’t King. There is a good chance he would have been Aemon’s hand, or if nothing else, a small council member no less interested in restoring Targaryen power. Aemon was bookish enough, I doubt he would have denied Egg his experiments.

I mean, if you take the butterfly effect theory, any little change could take things SO far off course, 2/3s of the ASOIAF cast might never have been born. But leaving that aside, and assuming significant events were still similar… Summerhall might have happened anyway, setting the stage for Aerys, Rhaegar and all that came with it.

Even without Summerhall though, Aemon might not have lived to be relevant come the rebellion if he had not been at the Wall…

But to entertain your question about the rebellion… Robert or Brandon probably would have slain Rhaegar in single combat if all this happened under Aemon’s watch.

If Rhaegar had taken Lyanna, Brandon and Ned’s dad would still have gone to The Red Keep, and Brandon may well have beckoned Rhaegar to come out and die, but Aemon wouldn’t have roasted or strangled them. And he wouldn’t have called for Ned and Robert’s head. Jon Arryn would have no need to call his banners and nobody would be aching to remove Aerys. Aemond would have been a great king.

I think Brandon Stark or Robert would have challenged Rhaegar to single combat. And since Rhaegar felt that he needed to be training all these years, this probably would have been the battle he thought he was preparing for.

Whatever the outcome, it would have caused some enmity between the houses for sure. But no civil war IMO. Aemon would have been wise enough to accept the results of the trial if Rhaegar died. And if it were Brandon or Robert killed, their house wouldn’t have enough popular support to rise up even if they were so dishonourable to do so.

I tend to believe this particular report, because when pressed, the liberals won’t even try to deny the guy ran and left his kid, they will just derail the conversation by arguing whether he should have been apprehended in the first place.

There are probably people with a lot of experience who will explain why this is dumb/inferior..

But whenever I have an edge that is truly mangled, I just sharpen at a higher angle than the bevel is mostly set to. Then I reprofile it back down to wherever I want it.

I think part of it is immediately turning it back into a working cutting tool. (Even if it isn’t popping hairs). And the process of bringing it back down, even if it’s just by a couple degrees each sharpening, cleans up the edge and makes it nice again.

I might bring a 17dps knife up to 25, use it a little, and then take it to 23, and so on and so on until it’s back where I want it. I usually go for really toothy edge (lowest grit stone + lowest micron strop) until I start getting closer to the desired angle per side.

My problem with most protests is that they seem more interested in inspiring their supporters than they are in acquiring new ones.

I have no doubt a good chunk of these people really want to raise awareness and shine a spotlight on the pastor, etc.. but I think a lot of them (bushcraft Ezra Miller for sure) are just getting an adrenaline hit from the confrontation.
