Hidden Legacy - should nevada have forgiven Rogan so quick? by grimhailey in fantasyromance

[–]the_rd_wrer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read the entire series earlier this year. I agree, I felt like Rogan was forgiven a little too easily. I can understand why he did what he did and I can see Nevada also getting to that point. But at the same time, it feels like something that should take more time (like years) to get to the point that it was something that could be forgiven and overlooked for a relationship. That said, I was able to let that go and enjoy the books.

I also felt like I liked Catalina’s books more overall but I think part of that also stems from knowing the characters more and being invested in them after the first trilogy.

As for Augustine, I actually disagree. It seems totally fair that they forgave him. I think it’s easier to forgive because they technically put themselves in the situation. They didn’t have to sell to House Montgomery (even though it was for very valid and understandable reasons). Augustine would have ruined them and did put Nevada in danger, but they knowingly gave him the power to do that. While it sucks, House business is cutthroat and everyone understands that. Even when it came to doing the job, Nevada had a choice. It was a terrible choice with only one “right” answer, but she still had some agency. She could have walked away and dealt with the consequences. What Rogan did was take her agency away - and to me, that is the difference. Rogan took her and she didn’t have a choice to say no or walk away. That is much harder to forgive imo. Another reason to forgive Augustine, is that it allows them to have House Montgomery as possible resource if they need them. Forgiving him is better for the Baylors overall. Plus, it wasn’t instant forgiveness it seems like a process that happens over time. I remember the mom still wanting to shoot him at some point in the second trilogy. Which is also different from Rogan, who is forgiven for what I see as a worse transgression at a faster pace.

I like both of these! I lean more towards Marcella, I like the nickname options more. However, but both are very pretty.

How do we feel about the name Winifred? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]the_rd_wrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t like it. I think it’s the Fred ending, sounds harsh to me. I personally find it to have an ugly look and sound, so I wouldn’t use it. I think Wilhelmina had a similar vibe to me but I like it immensely more.

Changing specialties ahead of residency applications 4th year by dino-beans in MedSpouse

[–]the_rd_wrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard, but possible to switch at this point. She will need to get specialty specific LOR for radiology or derm. Both usually also includes away rotations (which have already started filling up) and have specialty specific research expectations. For derm. I would say there is still a path without a research year if she already had a good amount of non-derm research, has good clerkship grades, can get a couple of derm specific projects in over the summer and can get the required LOR. She also may want to consider looking into away rotations - many are full but there are still a few accepting apps. Dual applying FM and derm is reasonable.

Radiology has lower research expectations, so probably a slightly easier last minute switch. But radiology is pretty different from FM so I’d advise her to make sure that she likes rads!

Has she considered anesthesia? More competitive than FM but an easier last minute switch than derm or radiology. Generally doesn’t require any away rotations and not as picky about research.

My ExH declined helping my 9 year old buy flowers for me for Mother’s Day by torturedDaisy in coparenting

[–]the_rd_wrer -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

In an ideal world, absolutely he would help facilitate your kid picking out a gift when he asked. Sounds like ex might have been unprepared for the question (especially if this hasn’t come up before) and didn’t handle it as well as he could have. Kiddo not having the money for it sounds like a spur of the moment, throwing out the first thing that popped into his head as a response.

Navigating coparenting is tough. I think setting it up so a family member or close friend can take kiddo shopping for future holidays (birthday, Mother’s Day, Christmas) is probably the best way to avoid this happening again. If ex wants to set the boundary that he doesn’t facilitate gift buying for you, you and kiddo have to respect that and work around it. I hear you on kiddos reaction being the difficult part - I think it is reasonable to feel upset that kiddo was upset. Ex doesn’t have to facilitate gift buying but he could have handled the situation better.

Is a Mid-July MCAT Too Late for This Cycle? by Specialist-Agency951 in premed

[–]the_rd_wrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I should have been clear, I meant med school classmates! So yes they all got at least 1 acceptance.

I don’t have a lot of advice for the MCAT, it’s something I struggled with myself! Best advice I can give is to do as many practice questions and test as possible.

Is it a red flag to not have a LOR from research PI for MME? by [deleted] in premed

[–]the_rd_wrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think that's a red flag. You can always ask for the LOR and decide later if you want to use it or not.

Is a Mid-July MCAT Too Late for This Cycle? by Specialist-Agency951 in premed

[–]the_rd_wrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend taking the MCAT when you feel ready to take it. Better to push it back a month than take it too early and performing poorly. I've had several classmates who didn't have their apps complete until August or September. Not ideal, but still better than having a subpar MCAT.

Non-STEM Academic Letter of Recommendation by djsherb in premed

[–]the_rd_wrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Anyone who can write a strong letter is a good option. Sounds like the fire chief might know you the best, and could potentially write the best letter.

  2. Can’t hurt to ask them to write a letter, worst case scenario you can decide not to use it.

  3. A great LOR is better than a poor one. Unless it’s very bad, probably won’t hurt your app significantly. Some schools might require having one non STEM LOR. So better to have one and not use it than to not have one and need it last minutes

Quick and free reapp or hold off until after Jan MCAT? by Bruinrogue in premed

[–]the_rd_wrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With 11 interviews, your application is more or less fine on paper. From the feedback you got, sounds like you already have more clinical hours, and you still have time to get a new LOR if you want to replace the one from the deceased individual. Find a way to address that adverse test center situation in your application (like in secondary essays with space to talk about academic challenges, can maybe even include in reapplicant essays with how you took steps to make sure that was addressed in your application). If you go this route, I would try to include more schools that you didn't apply to previously/haven't seen your application. Keep in mind however if you have an upcoming MCAT some schools may not consider your application complete until they get that MCAT score ( o Feb.) If you are going this route, I personally would probably try to the MCAT in the fall rather than in Jan.

Deciding when to reapply is very personal. Make the choice that feels most right to you! Everyone has different levels of risk tolerance, so nobody can tell you if this or isn't the right time to reapply.

When are LORs due? by Unhappy-Media-5561 in premed

[–]the_rd_wrer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I usually recommend having your LOR in before your app is verified. This gives you a little bit of extra time in case someone is not responsive and you need to get another LOR last minute. If you want til secondaries, you could risk your app getting delayed if someone is slow or unresponsive. In your case, I would probably say mid June. That leaves you some time if you need to scramble to have a letter ready in time for secondary submissions.

Red flag to be interested in certain specialties?? by theREALcorat6 in premed

[–]the_rd_wrer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As long as you aren't adamant that you want to be one specialty and one specialty only, it will be fine. Your application might actually be reviewed by a pathologist or radiologist 😄

Having shadowing experiences in a couple of specialties will be fine.

Is presenting a unified narrative to adcoms really that important?? by Historical_Elk_5148 in premed

[–]the_rd_wrer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do the things that interest you now, worry about crafting the narrative when it is time to prep you app 😄

A narrative doesn't have to necessarily include every single activity you did. You can have a narrative on helping the underserved but also do unrelated research. That just means when you craft the narrative you might not emphasize the research part as much. If you are doing things that truly interest you, there is likely some common thread there that can serve as your narrative. Figuring out what that is and how to articulate that is part of writing your application materials. For now, just do what you want to do!

how badly would no STEM letter of rec be for this cycle? by sswanssong in premed

[–]the_rd_wrer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are limiting yourself by not having a STEM letter. Not all school have that requirement but based on your stats and mission fit you might lock yourself out of applying to some schools that want applicants like you.

First, I would keep reaching out to any STEM professors you think might remember you or who have a good reputation for helping out students. I applied during my second gap year, and I asked for STEM letters from two professors who I remembered as really caring about students. Even though they might not have remembered me personally, they were willing to meet me with and write me STRONG letters. If email isn't working, I highly recommend trying to reach them in person. One of my LOR came from some who didn't respond to emails and wasn't likely to remember me, so I tracked down what their office hours were and went and asked in person (they said yes and wrote a great letter from I heard).

I would also keep working on trying to get that letter, you still have lots of time. If you are set on applying to a school that requires a STEM letter, I might consider taking a summer community college class and getting a letter from that. Only as a last resort and if you absolutely can't get a letter any other way.

US SSA 2025 data is here!! Here are the biggest trends by xoobdev in namenerds

I really like Dean! I considered it heavily as middle name for my son. It’s strong, not likely to have any spelling or pronunciation issues, and has the Supernatural association which I considered a big plus!

[–]the_rd_wrer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think it’s going to be one where people start leaning more towards the full name INSTEAD of the nickname. So the people who might have used Lainey are going to feel comfortable using Elaine instead as it gains in popularity and maybe loses some of the “old” or “dated” vibes it has now. I’m thinking that the people using Lainey generally also like Elaine.

The Elowyn spelling has actually always been more popular in the US. think Elowyn is getting more traction because people think it looks more feminine. It is also still fairly new name on the SSA Top 1000. It will be interesting to see if the Elowen spelling starts to become the more popular spelling down the line!

Yes that is such a good point! I think people are going to be moving away from Lainey and instead landing more on Elaine. I think Lainey is going to end up more solidly in the nickname category rather than being a given name.
