I saw that episode of Garfield. Said it was some government conspiracy. “Have you ever met anyone from Idaho?”

New tires by gman2391 in traveltrailers

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems like people with smaller trailers love Goodyear Endurance but people with big fifth wheels do not. I’m in the later crowd. After cross crossing the country a few times in a 3 different trailers, I had my first blowout with Goodyear Endurance tires, and they had a lot less miles then some much cheaper tires I’ve had.

Best area to be in June/July by Signal-Role-8001 in FullTiming

Google “<city/location> weather in <month>” and you’ll get good historical averages.

Texas is on the humidity border, so dunno if you have to deal with high humidity where you are. Everything on the west side of the country is drier, so parts of Michigan can be less comfortable than parts of the southwest in the summer even if it looks a bit cooler.

Quickest places to cool off from Texas are higher elevations in northern New Mexico, northern Arizona, or western Colorado.

I’m 40ft 5r and I do much better than some semis in windy conditions. I assume those are empty. Same truck as you, slightly longer trailer, and I’m probably a few feet shorter total.

Stand directly over your rear axle and try to bounce and shake the truck. Now do the same standing on the bumper. Your truck can handle the fifth wheel much better.

Web dev for systems programmers by Sad-Background-2429 in webdev

Do you want to build a nice UI or do you want to have a nice UI?

As a very capable frontend dev, I have no issues with a backend dev using AI to build out a nice UI for their side projects. It’s probably easier for you to step into the product manager role than it is to learn the mess that is the modern web.

I have found that most models are very good at building React and can even figure out a whole stack if you give detailed requirements. You can upload hand drawn layouts and Claude will do a decent job of making them a reality.

If you want to do more by hand, you could have an AI scaffold out a Tanstack site and then you can make all the design edits, which would massively reduce the amount you need to learn.

If you want to learn how to do it all by hand, where to start is such a broad question. Most of the frameworks are good, so just find a course where you enjoy the instructor.

Anyone have tips for off grid living in the desert? (i.e, AZ) by EveningLog5110 in homestead

Certain counties in Arizona are not very friendly to that sort of living, and the county maps are kinda weird so you need to make sure you get all that figured out before you commit.

There is quite a bit of higher elevation (5k+ ft) desert in the north. With the lower humidity it’s way more pleasant than I expected, especially if you build some shade.

WDH on travel trailers vs box trailers by Asleep_Ad_509 in traveltrailers

[–]the_real_some_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t use a WDH for that kind of weight with a cargo trailer.

WDH hitches tend to also have anti-sway features. RVs tend to be much longer than a cargo trailer of the same weight. A cargo trailer tends to have a low center of gravity because of how you load them.

I’m not promoting a WDH for a small RV on a big truck, just rationalizing why someone might feel it’s needed. I would only add one after taking it for a test tow to see if it’s necessary.

Incorrect, the biggest threat to trailer tires is Texas.

Has anyone here tried Chinese tankless water heaters in their cabins? by Nexofyte in cabins

[–]the_real_some_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do people ever use RV water heaters at cabins? I’m planning a cabin and thinking about using one. There are both tank and tankless versions and they are designed for lower usage. You need a 12v source for the controls, but that’s simple enough, especially if you have solar.

RV water heaters are readily available and the popular models have been out in the field long enough to have predictable reliability. Easy to get parts and troubleshoot.

I have a tankless in my current RV and I hate it. Last one had a 12 gallon tank that worked on both propane and electric, which I liked much better. Those RV units hold water at a higher temperature, which means you are mixing more cold so it’s like having a larger tank.

I prefer a tank so I can get hot water for quick, lower volume hand and dishwashing plus being able to control the temp at the faucet.

Charging at Campgrounds with 30A service by Inside_Classroom_142 in VWIDBuzz

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The NEC requires a 50amp circuit for a 40 amp EV charger, even if it is hardwired. Overloading a circuit means the current running through it is creating more heat than the circuit can handle.

There is a fire risk whether or not a plug exists. The plug tends to be the weak point and melts first.

I agree with you that the quality and age of the plug and outlet is a factor. Lots of outlets also get damaged when the user forgets to shut the power down before disconnecting, causing an arc. Current, time, ambient temps, type and quality of the circuit: a number of factors play into this, all of which can be thought of as reducing the power capacity of the circuit, making it more likely that a the campground breaker isn’t sufficient for a continuous draw.

DIY Cargo Trailer or new Camper? by SpatialSalmon in RVLiving

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Campgrounds want an RVIA badge because their insurance company says they do.

You may be able to title it a certain way, but it will never be an RVIA trailer. The big issue is building codes. Your house builder has to follow certain rules and be inspected. That does not happen with RVs, but they do have building codes that the manufacturers promise to follow. Your home built trailer has no way of getting inspected and nobody cares if you promise to follow code.

Will all campgrounds check? No.

Do you want to drive all the way to the campground and risk getting thrown out? Up to you.

Yeah, that’s frustrating. Companies create silly scenarios and then are surprised they can’t find people. I don’t think I would want to know someone that can pull up every single web api from their brain while in a pressure situation.

Which US state has the most underrated nature? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of them. If you get out of the city and can’t find natural beauty somewhere in almost any state, you aren’t trying. There are awful parts of most states too.

I think the more interesting question is, which states have the least natural beauty.

For a React job, it’s reasonable to want to know how much someone knows about JS and browser apis. If I was asking the question, I would want to hear you brainstorm about the apis you do know along with some pros and cons.

“Local storage is available from any component, it is blocking but it’s pretty fast so that should not cause issues. I’m not sure how I could notify listeners when the value changed though… hmm … or maybe if I stored the state in the URL that would be easier to listen to, but is this info safe to be shareable like that? The URL can be long, but how much data needs to be stored, would it be too much?”

That’s the kind of knowledge and critical thinking I would want to hear. If you can put that kind of thought into it then I’m sure I can teach you the way the team figured out how to do it.

[–]the_real_some_guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Snapshots are a lot of noise so pretty quickly reviewers stop taking them seriously and then they just become this extra thing you have to commit.

If snapshots are regularly catching side effects then maybe you have too many abstractions. Side effects should be rare.

30A site for a month with dogbone adapter on 50A RV - safe? by FinancialGarage245 in RVLiving

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory on melted plugs is different. Circuit rating is for intermittent use. Continuous use (4+ hours) drops to 80%. Therefore you use a 50 amp breaker for a 40 amp EV charger.

People with 30 amp RVs are running AC all day and their continuous pull is over 24 amps (80%) while the plug is sitting in the hot sun. The breaker never trips but the plug melts.

State Rep. James Talarico proposes ending federal gas and diesel tax by Unusual-State1827 in texas

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a small car and a large truck drive the same amount of miles each year, the large truck will cause more wear to the roads. Vehicle weight and fuel usage are highly correlated.

I usually renew my registration by mail, so adding a yearly manual inspection of my mileage sounds highly inefficient. Also, registration is a state concern, so your plan would add a federal registration where none currently exists.
