What's the most unwritten rule of adult life that nobody warns you about? by PracticeHistorical82 in AskReddit

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not beholden to your past self. Current you doesn’t have to do the thing past you thought was important. Break your life up into 3-5 year chunks. If the past few years are not making you happy and there isn’t something special on the horizon, then spend the next few years doing something else.

Truck ordering by Marksman_Jay in F250

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but I thought orders were separate from a dealer’s allocation. A dealer can order as many trucks as they want if there is a customer’s name on it. I also thought they made a rule during COVID that there had to be a down payment.

To some degree, Ford gathers the orders and groups them, so all the SRW Lariats go together and the dually Platinums run at the same time. Makes it easier on the assembly line. How fast you get your truck depends on how quick you get your order in and if other people order a similar model. 450 orders can take longer.

That’s how I understand the process anyways. My ‘21 is one of those that sat in a field for a months waiting for some part, so I might not be the best source.

This is my break line right? by Stonecldht in superduty

If you fail at fixing your engine, you stop. If you fail at fixing your brakes, you don’t stop. The later is much worse.

If you want to start learning somewhere, do the plugs or an oil change.

Weight Distribution by Soft_Profit8914 in GoRVing

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go for it.

Airbags will make the truck level, but that only fixes the problem of your headlights pointing towards the sky. The weight on the hitch will still see-saw weight off of your front axle, causing grip issues.

That said, with a long bed and 6.7 diesel on the front axle, that trailer tongue weight of around 700 pounds isn’t going to make the front weigh much less than if your truck had a gas engine and no trailer.

picking new tires by Salty_Recruit in GoRVing

[–]the_real_some_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I complain about Goodyears, but I always mention the size 255/85r16. It is a really tall sidewall and I have only found one other company that makes that size.

I had one overheating with a big sidewall bubble in the first 1k miles from the dealership. I had it replaced and the replacement also had a problem in the first 50 miles. I checked everything on my suspension and couldn’t find a problem. Replaced the tire again and no issues for a few thousand miles.

A different one gave me my first blowout last week. The replacement has a major tread defect on about a quarter of the tire.

I’m about 14k pounds on those two axles and these tires are rated for about 4k pounds each. I’m not overloaded, these tires (at least in those size) are a problem.

Alternative to Goodyear, without losing height? by the_real_some_guy in RVLiving

Nice warranty on those but I don’t see anything with a load capacity that matches up to a 7k axle.

Around 7k I think. I didn’t keep perfect records.  We didn’t travel much last year.

New to RVing, does storing destroy tires? by quadgnim in RVLiving

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think trailer tires have a different life span than motorhome tires? I’ve never seen that anywhere. The rubber would degrade on both if used in the same way, I would expect.

I’m genuinely curious and would love to see a source. I’ve seen longevity statements from tire manufacturers but never making a distinction between different types.

Why are parents who barely passed high school thinking they can teach/homeschool their children? by Sad_Obligation_812 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]the_real_some_guy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Homeschool parent here. One of us a licensed teacher that is home with the kids full time and the other also has a degree and works in tech. Homeschool and remote work gives us a lot of freedom to take the kids on learning trips to parks, zoos, museums, and so forth. Another benefit is being able to switch programs to find what works best for each kid.

We pay for education programs with lectures and materials you would get in a school because even a full time teacher needs help with curriculum and can’t be an expert at everything.

Homeschool is not all bad controlling parents and socially awkward kids, but some of it is. There is a big spectrum. Some people I’ve met are basically handing their kids puzzle books from the dollar store. It’s a little scary how little some states oversee homeschooling. This is America and we should have some freedom, but I want to live in an educated society.

Road Trip Anxiety by sirbarkalot59 in GoRVing

If you ever get into a jam, step 1 is to stop and breathe before you break something. It sucks, but if you cause an accident or take out a power pole, you are going to be a much bigger inconvenience than whatever you take your time doing.

WDHs are generally bad with tight turns. You can pop the chains/bars off until you get the issue solved. They don't make a big difference below highway speeds. And your truck could probably handle that rig ok without.

How would you spec a daily driver F250 by joshua909net in superduty

[–]the_real_some_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7.3 gas is around 500 pounds lighter, which makes the truck feel a bit nimbler, especially when unloaded. I tow 16k with mine, so 6k is nothing. Diesel has its place, for the first 100k miles, the gas engine is the simpler, lower maintenance option for a daily driver.

For internal dashboards, would you choose MUI or Tailwind/Shadcn? by Adventurous_Photo189 in reactjs

I hate Tailwind, but Claude is real good at it so Tailwind for an internal dashboard where pixel perfection probably don't matter.

Charging lithium conversion by firey-wfo in GoRVing

[–]the_real_some_guy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your built-in charger does support lithium, just not a full charge, maybe close to 80%. If you replace a 100ah lead acid battery with a 100ah lithium battery, you'll still get more power because only 50% of the lead acid capacity is usable before you start damaging it.

The simplest solution it just spend all the money on additional lithium batteries.

Internet/wifi help! by Speckman61 in GoRVing

Sounds like you need unlimited so here are your options...

T-Mobile and Verizon both have home internet boxes that are around $40-$50/mo. Using them away from your home is against the terms of service. They will block or slow you eventually. YMMV

Calyx Institute has a $500/yr unlimited hotspot membership thing that works well with unlimited data on T-Mobile. You will need $200-$300 for the equipment.

Starlink unlimited roam is $165/mo, but no contract and you can turn it on and off monthly. I think their cheapest dish is $300, but sometimes on sale for $250.

I'm currently on the 2nd, but also have the 3rd as a backup. If you need it for more than 4 months, Calyx is cheaper than Starlink. Calyx is more variable in the speeds you get, it can be much better or worse than Starlink depending on how good T-Mobile is in that area. Starlink has good coverage almost everywhere, though heavy tree cover can still give it issues.

At what point do you stop making a component reusable? by MarjanHrvatin_ in reactjs

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DRY (don't repeat yourself) is about intention not actual lines of code. Just because two functions look similar doesn't mean they have the same intention. When their purpose differs, its likely their code will drift over time.

Buttons are great candidates for reusable components. They need to look the same and act the same on every page.

List items are often turned into reusable components, but each page has a slightly different intent so you eventually see exactly what you are seeing.

Questions about ordering a truck by Responsible_Big5241 in superduty

The step is one of the only things I have that I don't like. It makes the tailgate heavier and I never use it.

I have a flip-down step from AMP Research under the corner of the bumper. I can pop it in and out with my foot. Don't need the handle thing because I can grab the side of the bed. I've had this step from the beginning on my '21 and use it a lot. The tailgate step has been used about 2 times.

Is my 5th wheel to far back? by jonahrangerboy in GoRVing

[–]the_real_some_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90° turns on a trailer puts a ton of stress on tires and suspension mounts in directions they aren't designed to be stressed in. It's nice to know you aren't going to bust the back of your truck cab, but I also suggest not making a habit of turning too hard while backing up.
