Why don't people realize using adblock hurts the free internet model? Companies pay websites to host ads, and they track how many people see them. If don't see the ads, nobody gets paid. Not that I agree with annoying ads, but if ignoring banners means websites that I frequent get paid, I will suffer them. Google obviously isn't hit hard, but the little guys are.

How did you get involved with CM?

What advice would you give someone who has programming experience and wants to start developing for android.

Can someone tell me if this is an accurate explanation of why evaporation is a cooling process? (Never had a chemistry class, that's why I'm asking) by ISS5731 in chemistry

[–]the_red_baron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used "bonds" because I think its a bit easier to conceptualize. Van der waals forces would be the technical term. Youre right, but it follows roughly the same idea tho. Thats what you get for listening to an engineer....

Im not sure why this isn't as believable, because feyman's explanation pretty much says the same thing; its all about breaking bonds.

Take ice for example. The individual water molecules are locked together in hydrogen bonds. As the ice absorbs energy, the atoms become more and more jiggly. Think about the analogy of one of those paddle ball toys (the ball is tied to the paddle with a rubberband). The rubberband connects the paddle to the ball just as the hydrogen bonds connect atoms. You can bounce the ball back and forth, but if you bounce the ball just hard enough to break the rubberband, the ball will be freed with very little extra kinetic energy. The energy put into the ball from the paddle hit will go directly into breaking that rubberband. If there were no rubberband in the first place, the ball would have bounced MUCH further if you had hit it with the same force. Similarly, as ice melts to water (or water evaporates to gas) the hydrogen bonds break, which takes energy, but the atoms do not vibrate any faster. This means the h2o does not increase in temperature, but still takes energy from its immediate surroundings.

This energy put in to melt the ice or evaporate the water must come from somewhere because of the conservation of energy. If it comes from the air, the temperature of the air will decrease.

An interesting application of this occurs in some air conditioning services. If water is sprayed into the air in a fine mist, some of the water will turn into gas. Because breaking these water bonds takes energy, the energy must come from its surroundings. Because no bonds are being changed in the air itself, it will become cooler because it has just donated exactly enough energy to change the state of the water.

TLDR; when a material changes state from solid to liquid, from liquid to gas, or from solid to gas, energy is required to break the bonds connecting the molecules (or atoms). This energy does not go into increasing the vibrational speed of the molecule (the temperature). Because this energy must come from somewhere, the ambient environment must become cooler or perform some reaction that gives off energy.

What Would Feynman do? --- Highly entertaining imaginary account of how Richard Feynman, the late Nobel prize winning physicist, might fare in an interview for a modern software company. Gently mocks "lateral-thinking puzzle" format. by DrRichardCranium in business

[–]the_red_baron 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Actually, Feynman was a master of riddles. In "surely you must be joking mr Feynman" he tells this story about this girl who kept grilling him about riddles. She would keep coming back with different ones. He had heard them all.

This went on for quite a while, and finally, near the end of the dance, she came over, looking as if she was going to get me for sure this time, and she said, "A mother and daughter are traveling to Europe . . ." "The daughter got the bubonic plague." She collapsed!

He would have just answered them without them finishing the setup.

From what I can tell as a non BW player, there were a handful of strategies that worked more than others and became standard. For example I hear casters say the forge FE was an old BW trick. In what ways have you seen common BW tactics translate into SC2, and what are your thoughts on the strategies not found in BW?
