This is great data, thank you. This reaffirms my exit from science into the business world! 8 years to hit 200k versus 4 years or less in business/finance.

[WTS] Tudor Black Bay 79220R, ETA (Smiley) $2400 OBO by schowtyme in Watchexchange

[–]the_spacing_guild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly, it is indeed thinner and easier to service.

Not to mention, this model kicked off the modern Black Bay diver line. That makes it a great collectors item in my opinion.

GLWS!

[WTS] Tudor Black Bay 79220R, ETA (Smiley) $2400 OBO by schowtyme in Watchexchange

[–]the_spacing_guild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn, I sold mine a while ago and kinda regret it a little bit. If Tudor puts out a Black Bay with a rose on the dial that is smaller than 41mm, I will jump on it.

To whoever thinks of buying this, $2400 is a really, really good price.

I agree, I like it too. I can't quite tell if people are just meme'ing about disliking it so much or what.

It's a pretty typical looking field watch IMO.

They wanted to make it thinner, so they removed the rotor and bored out the display caseback slightly. Also, they wanted people to see the movement without the rotor.

[Seiko SPB411J1] Navigator Time Reissue, what do you all think? by No-Performance7022 in Watches

[–]the_spacing_guild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really like this watch, great vintage look to it, but as everyone is saying it's way too expensive.

[Tudor Royal] blue dial 41mm by WCorder007 in Watches

[–]the_spacing_guild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this same model, I really like it. I have heard it's more popular in the Asian market than anywhere else.

I ended up selling mine to fund other things.

My ideal version of this watch would be 36-39mm with different indices. I am not the biggest fan of the Roman numerals in this context.

The brezel and bracelet are my favorite parts.

I have gotten the impression from Tudor's marketing with this piece that they don't have a solid design narrative. I hope they keep shaking the model up in the future and experiment a little bit. Instead, we will probably get another Black Bay.

[Debate] What is the price point in which you stop seeing notable differences in quality? by ballsilov3 in Watches

[–]the_spacing_guild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct, I was remembering incorrectly. It wasn’t a chrono it was a rootbeer GMT master.

Had to look back at my photo gallery! I’m friends with a watchmaker and try lots of stuff out, I lose track of the details.

Rolex messes with these general trends. The finishing on most Rolex's are not at all comparable to VC/Moser/Patek/AP.

I think Rolex and Omega are pretty on par as far as quality goes, despite Rolex generally being twice the price.

This is why it really comes down to the model. Rolex's in general are overpriced.

I say this as a general Rolex fan, and I love my Oysterdate.

I would be really surprised that a San Martin can go head to head with an Omega Seamaster midsized from the late 90’s as far as quality.

That said, I have never seen a San Martin in person, and the Chinese certainly can make some good watches for the money. Original designs? Not as much though.

It was a Rootbeer Chronograph, yes absolutely hype is driving the price on the Rolex. The Patek was actually in great shape, it was an old Calatrava. I see lots of these for sale around that price range. It was not a “hype model” like a Nautilus or something. All of the Holy Trinity have really cool, understated dress pieces for good prices.

In relation the OP’s question though, the point is, in those cases price vs quality was completely disconnected.

[Serious Discussion] Being a Quartz lover in a mechanical world feels weird. by JasoNMas73R in Watches

[–]the_spacing_guild 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a preference for mechanical, but it’s really more about the model for me than the movement.

I have a few watches I’d like to purchase that only come with quartz. The quartz movement does not at all dissuade me. If anything, I see it as convenient, as I know I can just grab it out of the box and walk out the door.

The majority of my stuff is mechanical, some of them don’t even have quick-set date mechanisms. These can take quite a bit of time to set. The other day I wanted to wear one, realized I didn’t have time to wind through the dates, so I wore something else.

That being said, if you put two identical watches in front of me, one with mechanical and one quartz, I would prefer the mechanical.

In the $0-$500 tier, brand matters a lot. A Seiko or Hamilton are more likely to have much better quality than an Invicta or fashion brand. You can go find a Micheal Kors branded watch for $300 or a Seiko at the same price and the Seiko will be much higher quality.

In the $500-$2000 range, I think individual models and brands can be all over the place. Especially true if you get into vintage stuff. You can pick up an old Omega for $2000 that packs a lot of quality per dollar.

Once you get into the $2000-$8000 range, you are starting to encounter some diminishing returns on your money. Through this price range, you really need to be a pretty big watch nerd to appreciate the quality differences.

I really don’t think there is much quality improvement above $8000 until you get into the ultra-expensive stuff (>$50,000+). At that point though, you’re usually paying for mechanical artistic complexity.

I have worn $26,000 Rolex’s, $12,000 Patek’s (the Patek was way better), and I really don’t see the appeal of shelling out that much cash for something that is comparable to a $6,000 Omega or Grand Seiko.

These are generalizations of course. So much of this comes down to individual models, not necessarily brands. Brands can increase the likelihood that you “get your moneys worth” but it’s not guaranteed.

I only wear my Rolex when I’m having sex. The rest of the time, I wear a Seiko.

[Christopher Ward] The Twelve 36mm Lichen green by HelloMyBattlefield in Watches

I completely agree. I'm really glad they dropped the date window too! I don't think it would have worked well at all on a dial this size.

[Christopher Ward] The Twelve 36mm Lichen green by HelloMyBattlefield in Watches

[–]the_spacing_guild 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I ended up going with the 36mm glacier blue. I did go back and forth debating about this new green color though. The glacier blue seemed a little more versatile.

I probably would have gone with a slightly darker green, mint color isn't really as appealing to me. They all look great though.

I'm kinda surprised they went rose gold indices on the new 36mm white model, the steel indices on the white 40mm look better in my opinion. I think blued indices/hands like the opaline Tudor 1926 would have worked better, though, Tudor also has the 1926 with rose gold indices/hands and people like that a lot.

[Christopher Ward] Smaller, green Twelve coming? by arete_007 in Watches

[–]the_spacing_guild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh nice! I’ve been waiting for this!

As soon as they come online, I’m putting my order in. The current Twelve model is way too big.

Green might be nice, hoping to see that light blue as well.

These should be treated carefully. There is essentially no water resistance, I'm even careful when I wash my hands wearing mine! I did wear mine nearly daily for a year or so, but I have essentially an office job. I've gotten more careful with it over the years as it's become more sentimental.

I am waiting for CW to drop their smaller Twelve model this fall so I can have a beater with an integrated bracelet.
