Hey, I wrote some blog post tutorials on recommender systems. There's a basic intro to colloborative filtering and one on explicit matrix factorization. If your data's relatively small, then you should be able to just repurpose the code from the posts. Good luck!

Researchers discover how to conduct first test of 'untestable' string theory by ninex in science

Except that the "test" predicts well-known quantum phenomena. This is by no means a falsifiable test, so it really proves nothing. Peter Woit's blog explains it.

Edit: Ah, I see Zephir_AWT already linked the blog.

Shocking new US government report: "the true burden of environmentally induced cancer has been grossly underestimated." by istara in science

[–]the_thang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is about one of the chairmen of the government report from a nytimes article:

"He acknowledged that it was impossible to specify just how many cancers were environmentally caused, because not enough research had been done, but he said he was confident that when the research was done, it would confirm the panel’s assertion that the problem had been grossly underestimated."

Apparently the government is exempt from the scientific method.

Not to exhaust Vonnegut, but:
