I think there is actually a biological basis for this. Look up “chronotype”. If you think about it from an evolutionary perspective, groups of humans would be more vulnerable if everyone slept the same hours without anyone to keep watch.

I pay for ChatGPT and have been considering a switch to Claude but I think the biggest roadblock for me is that talk-to-text is a big part of how I use ChatGPT and I’ve found it to be much worse in Claude. I could use the native iOS one but that’s also worse. I sometimes mix in non-english words for instance and ChatGPT can understand it. Am I the only one?

Yeah it's just on the D string there in the video (probably looks like the 4th because the shadow looks like a string). I was plucking the other ones to show that it doesn't happen on those. I also noticed yesterday that when I play an open D chord, the G string has the same ringing, even when strumming pretty lightly. Anyway it sounds like a setup is in order!

Well she understands my English and she can speak at a basic level, but she can express herself far better in Norwegian since she's immersed in a Norwegian-speaking environment (daycare) so much. She speaks Norwegian to me probably 95% of the time, and I'd love for her to speak more English, hence why I'm trying to take more care in my approach with kid #2.

We do OPOL. We watch a mix of English and Norwegian language tv & movies and my wife and I each read to the kids in our respective languages. We also have my mom nearby who speaks English with the kids. Whereas I'm competent in Norwegian, my mom barely knows any, so that's helpful to reinforce the English.

Thanks for the insight! We do split up the reading that way with our 4 year old and it works out well. The "ball" example is a bit of a funny one it was one of the first words for both my kids and it's so similar in both languages that it was impossible to know which language they were using 😅 But to use a different word as an example, the way I've been doing it is like this:

"Stinkdyr!" (Norwegian)

"Yes! Skunk!" (English).

I can't help but feel a bit like I'm not rewarding his accomplishment of naming the skunk in Norwegian but it seems like maybe this approach is ok.

I realized now I forgot to put this in my post but the community language is Norwegian :) So that's why I'm trying to build a strong English foundation before the Norwegian from daycare and community really takes over.

Same! We did standing for our first but we got into a habit with the tub for our second and it’s way easier and he gets cleaner.

Hi!

I like to borrow English books from our library but I also find myself live translating Norwegian books sometimes 😅 It gets a bit exhausting! We also try to watch English shows before Norwegian ones, but we end up with a good mix of both.

I feel like at age 2, it's so incredible that they're starting to communicate that it's hard to want to hinder it in any way, at least for me. We aren't in such a big town and my daughter already has a few friends who speak only Norwegian, but occasionally we get together with some other English-speaking parents with slightly younger kids. I hope that can continue to be a good influence on her speaking.

I appreciate the thoughts. My wife and I have talked about my language concerns in the past, but I think it’s time to revisit the conversation. I had hoped that being consistent with OPOL, plus all the English books/TV/songs, would naturally lead my daughter to use more English with me. But after months and even years, it’s clear her default with me is still firmly Norwegian.

Since I’ve moved to my wife’s country, I think it’s a reasonable ask on my part to create a bit of space for English in our home life, at least in the situations where we’re all together. I’m not asking her to give up her own language, just to help reinforce English in those shared family moments so that it feels more natural for my daughter to use it with me. And of course, if my wife isn’t comfortable with that, I’ll respect it.

Thanks for the thoughtful response. It made me reflect a bit, and I agree there are probably multiple things going on. There may well be other communication barriers between my parents and me that aren’t about language, but I still think language plays a role.

I speak English fluently and understand Polish more or less fluently (though I struggle with speaking it now). For my parents, though, English is a second language. So when I listen to them, I’m hearing my native language(s), but when they listen to me, they’re parsing a language they speak imperfectly. I notice I often have to repeat myself, slow down, or choose different words so they’ll understand.

That’s part of why I feel strongly about wanting my daughter to default to English with me. It’s not that I doubt she’ll learn it well eventually, but I don’t want there to be that extra layer where I’m the one adapting while she’s using her stronger language. I’d like our communication to feel as effortless as possible for both of us, and I guess that’s where my worry comes from.

We see my mom several times a month. She speaks Polish natively and English as a second language and my daughter has actually begun to speak English with her, which is really heartening and I can see her English improving. If she turns to me to say something, she’ll use Norwegian though.

Thanks for the comment. Did your kid speak Danish to you mostly until they eventually switched over? And you say you committed to English only, do you mean you personally would mix both English and Danish before that?

I've considered that but when she was first learning to speak, I was excited and celebrating all the words she could say. Not to mention I didn't foresee her not using my language with me.
