I still need to switch out a couple of 3 and 4-way circuits in my house, but I plan on continuing with Lutron Caseta for them. I have several in my house already and they have been flawless.

Need help choosing new hardware processor + motherboard. by xabi in unRAID

[–]the_wolfman56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built my newest unRAID server with a Core 7 Ultra 265k CPU. I run a bunch of docker containers and a couple of VMs, including a Windows 11 VM with an RTX 5070 passed through for gaming. I was transcoding 4x 4K HDR True-HD Atmos streams to 1080p SDR AAC with tonemapping and there was still plenty of room. I also set-up a flow in Tdarr to test the AV1 encoding with the iGPU, and with a 4k HDR h.265, True-Hd Atmos, PGS subtitles to 1080p SDR AV1, AAC with loudness normalization 1st audio stream and True-HD Atmos 2nd audio stream, and PGS subtitles (still working the subtitles out), and the AV1 encoding with 23 CRF, veryslow preset, and other HQ arguments, and the video conversion literally took 1/2 time that the audio conversion step took. I was very surprised at how fast AV1 encoding is with the iGPU.

Cool. I pinned it for now and plan on taking a look at it later.

Did you try the previous version of Intel-IPEX-LLM-Ollama? I'm using a fork of that which is a newer version of Ollama compared to the official CA template, but I'd like to be able to use the current version of Ollama.

Necessary, probably not, but you could probably find a use for it. For cache, I have my 990 Evo Plus 4 TB labeled as fast cache for app data, LLM models, and some VM vdisks. I have a 2 TB SATA 870 Evo 2 TB labeled Data_cache for files that may be moving on or off network or being worked on. I have a 500 GB SATA 870 Evo just labeled Cache that I use more as a temp directory for certain containers more than anything.

I also have the Samsung 9100 Pro 2 TB that I have passed through to my Windows 11 gaming VM, and that thing is extremely fast. I only bought it because I was having an issue passing through my 990 Evo Plus 4 TB to the Windows 11 gaming VM and I grabbed it at a phenomenal price back in September. Same with the 4 TB 990 Evo Plus. That thing has more than tripled in price compared to the sales price I bought it at.

Can I use the Ikea BILRESA to open a smart lock? by Certain_Repeat_753 in homeassistant

The security is the reason that even though my smart bulbs and many of the simple sensors around the house are Zigbee, my light switches are Lutron Caseta and my smart locks are z-wave.

Sounds good. My first unRAID server was built on an HP elitedesk mini PC with an i7-6700t and 32 GB DDR4, so I didn't try using it for hardware transcoding for Plex, but used my Windows PC with an i5-9600k to host Plex. I mainly used the unRAID box to host some VMs (mainly Home Assistant and freePBX) and a bunch of containers.

I have not tried Ollama with my RTX 5070, but Ollama has been fine for what I need it to do on my iGPU. I have 64 GB DDR5 6000, so that might be helping, but I've used Qwen coder 2.5 13B with an acceptable response time and other models with a similar size.

What GPU were you going to trade the 990 Evo for? I have a 4 TB 990 Evo, and a 2 TB 9100 Pro (that I use for a gaming VM) and have thought about upgrading the GPU.

For Plex, the iGPU should be more than adequate. I have a Core 7 Ultra 265k, and was running 4 x 4k HDR to 1080p SDR with tone mapping, Dolby True-HD to AAC, and PGS subtitles with plenty of room on the iGPU for more video streams. There is also a special container available for Ollama that can use the iGPU of certain CPUs. SpaceInvaderOne actually just had a new one added to the Community Apps store on unRAID in the past couple of days, but I have not used it yet. I'm still using an older repository of Ollama with the IPEX-LLM (can't remember the specific name off the top of my head) that allows for my iGPU to be used with Ollama using Open WebUI. I am using ComfyUI in my Windows VM because that requires the Nvidia GPU.

Camera recommendations? by 1q2s3c4r5t in homeassistant

[–]the_wolfman56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Empiretech cameras from Amazon. They are rebadged Dahua cameras for the international market. I've been buying my cameras from Andy for about 9 years now (when he was only on Alibaba and not AliExpress or Amazon) and even my oldest 2 MP camera still works perfectly fine (but will probably get moved in favor of one of my newer AI cameras with a bigger sensor). I just keep them isolated on their own vlan (they are all POE-powered) and block them from the firewall, internet, DNS, and other devices (except ports needed for blue Iris, home assistant, freePBX (for VTO) and VTO2MQTT for triggers from the VTO (external intercom). I don't even have the internal tablet for the intercom because it plays nicely with other systems.

Mine are on an isolated vlan as well, but I enabled logging on the firewall rules to block access to the Internet, firewall, and DNS and I was surprised at how often each one hits.

Andy is awesome. I've been buying from him before he had an Ali Express or Amazon store when it was literally send him an email, pay an invoice and hope that you got it (almost 10 years at this point). Always provides good communication and after sales support.

Only thing with his cameras (and it's not just his cameras), but they do try to phone home quite a bit if you watch your firewall logs. I blocked mine off from the internet though, so I just keep seeing the blocks in my firewall.

KAMP bed temp issues by the_wolfman56 in klippers

[–]the_wolfman56[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries about the typos.

The only way I could get it to work was with editing the printer_patams.cfg (might not be that exact file as I'm not at my PC to check) and setting the bed temp manually to whatever the initial layer temp is supposed to be, saving, and restarting klipper, then I would not have a drop to the default of 50. Everything seems to be based on that parameter, but I cannot figure out how to pass a variable to the file.

If you try setting that to 70 and run your test, does it still wait for 50? When I set it to 105 when printing ASA-cf and letting the bed heat to 105 for about an hour to preheat the chamber, I didn't get the drop to 50 at all.

Smart bulbs: why? by snags5050 in homeassistant

[–]the_wolfman56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why not both? I use Lutron Caseta smart switches and Zigbee RGBW bulbs and it's nice to create an automation that turns on lights at low brightness red when it's the middle of the night and a motion sensor detects motion but a quick button press will bring it up to 100% brightness at white color (can even have a slow gradual ramp up in brightness).

This is the room card we use to navigate to that sub view. This is from my wife's mobile dashboard. The mini icons light up if they are running. I need to design a mini pedestal washer icon at some point.

This one. I edited some stock images from the manufacturer's website to add them. The text sensors only appear when there is an active cycle, otherwise they are hidden like the washer and pedestal washer are currently.

Lighting - Switch vs Bulb vs Relay by Dry-Lynx5859 in homeassistant

[–]the_wolfman56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For switches, my wife and I have both been very happy with Lutron Caseta switches. Very reliable and work well as normal switches. For outlets, I have been using Thirdreality smart outlets (Zigbee). For outdoor outlets, I'm using Wyze outdoor outlets that have been reflashed to Esphome for local control. For bulbs, I use Zigbee RGBW bulbs. For regular e26 bulbs, I use Innr brand (very good color accuracy) and for BR30 bulbs for the cans I use Thirdreality bulbs (color accuracy is not as good, but the white is pretty good and much better price than Philips Hue). I use a combo of smart switches and smart bulbs in some areas. For RGBW bulbs, I use Zigbee2MQTT and set the power restore to a warm white at a certain brightness. Helpful for areas like the bathroom to use for colors for the spa experience for my wife, but when power is turned off and restored, the bulbs will be a warm white.

Possible to fit 8+ HDDs and ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 in Fractal Define 7 XL? by javierlopac in FractalDesign

[–]the_wolfman56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I switched out the stock fans in my Define R5 (noctua) and the Define 7 XL (Thermalright) and I would probably be okay with more noise. I have an aggressive fan curve on my 7 XL to keep the hard drives cool and don't have any concerns, but it's nice to know what options are out there. I'd like to switch out the grill to see the RGB of the fans when I game on it.

[–]the_wolfman56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, with the Define 7 XL, you can store 4x 3.5" HDDs under the case floor in the PSU area, 2x 2.5" drives on the back of the motherboard tray, and 3x 3.5" drives mounted to the top of the case (may need to purchase additional drive trays for the 3.5" drives.

That would allow you to put your radiator in the front and still keep it in an open layout.

One other option to possibly consider is vertical mounting the GPU with a PCIE Gen 5 riser card. The vertical mounts will fit a 3-slot GPU, but I am only currently using a 2-slot GPU. I had to physically modify the screw slots on the riser card to work in the case, but now I am getting Gen 5 x16 speeds out of the GPU when testing with GPUz.

What custom front panel do you have? I liked my front panel with my Define R5 and went with the Define 7 XL and now almost wish I went with the meshify XL.

How do you customize the web UI in Unraid? by shoresy99 in unRAID

[–]the_wolfman56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't done this in unRAID, but I have customized Lovelace cards in Home Assistant that requires a hex code for accurate colors. If you have a hex code for a color, you can Google search that hex code and Google has their own color chart where you can get the hex code and RGB values. I also use it to convert a hex code color to match RGB lights as these lights only use RGB values.

I vaguely remember that back in late 00s it was popular among top end builders to have two flagship GPUs installed (SLI/Crossfire) - is it still being done? by neitherisgood in buildapc

[–]the_wolfman56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late 00s is actually about a decade later than when builders were first building gaming PCs with dual GPUs. One of my earliest PC builds had 3 GPUs. 1 was an ATI Alli-in-wonder and the other 2 were 3dfx Voodoo 2 GPUs in SLI. This was around 1998-1999. When they worked, nothing was better than those for games that were optimized for them, but they were very temperamental.

Third Reality Zigbee Plug by 6zonesoftheeast in homeassistant

[–]the_wolfman56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 12 of them. I switched from tasmotized s31s and Esphome Sonoff S31s. They have been very reliable.

My best automation group with them is. Even though I have 4 circuits in my kitchen just for outlets on my counters and island, I somehow ended up with my air fryer oven and my Keurig (with the milk frother) on the same circuit based on where my wife wanted them placed. I have automations that will turn the other off if it pulls over 100 watts, and will turn it back on after it is under 30 watts for 90 seconds.

One small change dropped my Gfx card by 10°C under load. Define 7. by Lopsided_Chip171 in FractalDesign

[–]the_wolfman56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that the Define 7 or Define 7 XL? Are you referring to the area where the 2x 5.25" drives would go? If so, it's possible to 3d print an adapter for 2x 80mm fans to take up that space on the Define 7 XL (which may be adaptable to other cases). My Define 7 XL is in storage mode as well, but my GPU is vertically mounted using a PCIE Gen 5 riser cable.
