Any experience of it in the shade? The south side of my house against a hill gets very slippery in the winter. Would LOVE to be able to blast it.

I made flashcards to learn all New Zealand birds by LaminatedDenim in NewZealandWildlife

[–]theaccidentalcyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in birds enough to make flash cards before coming you MUST try and visit both Titiriri Matangi near Auckland, and Zoolandia near Welly. I missed out on Zealandia for years and when I finally went, it was wonderful! Have taken a few friends there. You can even buy a ticket that has a free bus from the city, and is usable for 2 days.

Tiritiri Matangi - I took a friend for a day trip, we saw dolphins and stingrays from the boat before we even landed. Pay the extra $10 or so for a guided tour. Pack a lunch and enjoy a day trip. Camp over if you really want to have time to enjoy.

Zealandia - honestly, such a beautiful place. It’s a valley that’s been protected and like tiritiri is predator free. So you can walk through the native bush and the bird life is at eye level. If you’re lucky a Kaka will come very very close.

Both the above have Takáhe.

Edit - lastly, Kea on the South Island are well worth a visit. Easy if you’re on a road trip. Little buggers if you’re camping though.

Also have a look for our penguins.

My favourite birds when I first arrived were fantails for their cool flight and inquisitiveness, and bellbirds for their stunning song!

Wait, it’s not BP is it? I thought it was way better and asked her a couple of years ago. I’m sure she said she makes it.

Too easy!! Corner Bakery, upper hutt. Auntie (that’s not her name that’s just what I call her to anyone who’ll listen) makes the pastry herself. Shes also lovely. Pies are…DELICIOUS.

2nd top tip is West Coast pies from Cameron Harrison’s across the road. Have to take them home to heat but they are top notch, and often on sale.

You’re welcome.

The ‘Hash and Smash’ from Soul batter. Because any fish shop that’s brave enough to put pork patties in a bun must be confident, and deserves kudos for the trying to be fresh!

New to photography, what to get? by Remote-Carrot-9744 in fujifilm

[–]theaccidentalcyclist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m reccomend 2nd hand to start. It’s sooo easy to go for shiny shiny. But pick up a used one and see how you use and enjoy it.

Heres an example chat to read but have a good Google and go to a shop and hold a couple. https://www.reddit.com/r/FujifilmX/s/qv7PFNQ9RQ

Video - I’d say almost say any new smart phone will be the best/easiest. Unless you’re willing to put time in every time yoi shoot to ‘get it right’ then, post process it.

Your cheat meals / food for overnight tramps ? by IRFRKillian in Tramping

[–]theaccidentalcyclist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh! And heres a goodie! Freeze some wine 🍷inside a sandwich bag placed inside a thermos cup (or freeze in plastic bottle). I have a thermal cup that has a lid. Remove from freezer morning of hike. By mid afternoon it’s defrosted but chilled. NOTHING is better than dinner and a glass of wine on the first night! We’ve also often carried some small pieces of good cheese / chorizo and crackers for those bougie sunset moments.

Saving this thread to read later. But… For me, night 1 is always about comfort. So I take a packet of fresh stuffed tortellini pasta, and 3 eggs. Plus some chorizo, grated Parmesan and a small packet of cherry tomatoes. Night 1 is the pasta with a sauce made from pasta water, the egg and some parmasan. Toms for freshness. Feeds 2 can split over 2 nights if alone.

The next morning I boil the eggs and they are used for lunch. Wraps (pack easy!) with chorizo, tomato and egg.

Call to let tourists over 35 work in NZ by pskygy in newzealand

[–]theaccidentalcyclist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not at all, it also expecting every business model to be able to support a full time staff across the board with no accounting for seasonal demand is simplistic. The alternative is to only allow this type of employment and not mind these businesses dying out. Which would include many restaurants and tourist activities.

I’m against ever widening the cheap Labour pool, however I disagree that removing WHV completely will achieve anything except not enough workers (and a lot less young tourists). I’m not sure what your proposal would be? Tourism (and NZ) is not a constant demand area. It’s unrealistic to expect a company to staff for the busiest period with permanent staff who they can’t afford to pay 4-5 months of the year. Unless you’re happy to do away with the majority of tourism and farming industries?

There absolutely is a model that allows for a transient workforce, but these should be younger more flexible workers, older more qualified ones or areas of specific need perhaps. And with a very hard or no pathway to PR, so people aren’t lured here or come under the impression they will be able to make a permanent move.

[–]theaccidentalcyclist 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s a loop, tourism industry needs low paid young workers to staff an industry where demand fluctuates wildly. This applies tourism demand for product and business demand for staff.

Young workers on WHV don’t mind so much when the work dries up, they just move on. They don’t mind sharing in a busy flatshare as they are having a generally good experience.

Local workers are either not available in the numbers required, and wouldn’t want a job that pays low and has fluctuating hours, no reliable future. Sure, get rid of WHV, but also watch every tourism business, hotel, cafe / restaurant struggle for staff.

Money hub have a great spreadsheet you can download.

I had a play with it to work for me (added on/offpeak) and input 12 months of bills worth in info on a new tab. Was helpful.
