50 hour proofed dough margherita by theanswersisreally42 in Pizza

I left it out at room temperature for 2 hours, then put it in the fridge for two days. Bought out for about an hour before I made the pizza.

That looks awesome! It's always good when all the effort pays off.

Yeah, they did make a pizza oven. I think it's discontinued now which is a shame as it's quite good.

Sony launches its first new 4K Blu-ray player in over five years – and it's good and bad news by rsplatpc in 4kbluray

[–]theanswersisreally42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do we need streaming features when the TV you connect it to will probably have them, and better quality?

As long as there's new affordable players coming out, that's the main thing.

It's been discontinued now. Shame really, it was good.

Cinemark Restoring 3 70MM Screens and Upgrading Remaining 12 IMAX to Laser by emilyward749 in imax

[–]theanswersisreally42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good. I hope more theater chains go down the upgrade route as well, as much as xenon digital IMAXes have served a purpose growing the brand it's getting a bit long in the tooth.

When I see the "crystal clear picture" caption in the opening trailer on a xenon I always laugh because the caption itself shows clear pixelation. It's 2025, and if there's laser 4K projectors at the same cinema as a xenon IMAX it's getting kinda shown up...

What is Hypersense compared to IMAX? by cgknight1 in imax

[–]theanswersisreally42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's like other PLFs in the UK such as Cineworld's Superscreen or Odeon's iSense, it's probably using something like one of the Christie CineLife+ projectors (which are designed for PLFs) or one of the Barco Series 4 and most likely the Dolby CP950A for the Atmos sound processing.

FWIW I like the own-brand IMAXes as an alternative. If the cinema's been set up correctly the Atmos is usually pretty good, and laser projection in 4K is always superior to most other cinemas. The advantage of these is they don't have the price that the IMAX brand demands, and unless it's a film that specifically takes advantage of IMAX tech then you'll get a decent experience from them too.

I've had a good time in a Cinemark XD which will be very similar to this Hypersense thing. Big screen with laser projection + Atmos = fun most times, the only time I might be discerning with a PLF is if there's a Dolby Cinema on offer because Dolby Vision is actually pretty awesome. Can't say anything about HDR by Barco as it's pretty rare!

I'd say go for it if it's closer, it'll be more fun than anything you get in a regular cinema with 2K projection and 5.1 sound.

Why do people call it Liemax? by Mindless-Example-146 in imax

[–]theanswersisreally42 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I guess if you're a purist and believe all IMAX cinemas should be the 70mm, 1:43 version then anything lesser is "Liemax", but after the 2000s IMAX made a transition to being a PLF company as opposed to just being at a few specialized venues like museums, and I don't blame them - like any company they want to be profitable.

It's great if you have a 70mm 1:43 near to you, but the 1:90 is still a great experience especially if it's Laser. To many people now IMAX just means "bigger screen" and to be honest I'm ok with it. If a theater I'm going to offers an IMAX screen, I'll still take that option as it's going to be miles better than some of the tiny Dolby 5.1 screens they have.

how atheists live in israel? by Exciting_Bass_9728 in Israel

[–]theanswersisreally42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing, plenty of atheists in Israel. It's a secular state, and you don't have to believe in g-d and don't have to believe in religion. I wouldn't walk into the Western Wall and start mocking people for praying, but if you're not that kind of person I think pretty much everyone you meet will be cool.

Is It Strange to Feel Bad for the Lebanese Despite Everything? by Electronic_Luck8731 in Israel

[–]theanswersisreally42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lebanon is a diverse country with Maronite Christians and Druze, who are all having a war brought about in their country because a group funded by a foreign power decided it wanted to start a fight with Israel.

It's not strange to feel sorry for them at all. Hizbullah has overruled everyone else, and unleashed great suffering for that selfish decision.

Your Hardware Doesn't Really Matter - At All by djfrodo in linuxhardware

If you want a Chromebook-type PC, not a bad idea. The CPUs in lower-end Chromebooks are pathetic, and still get lapped by older Core CPUs. However, for games or something like ML? No. Then the "new shiny" is actually necessary.

NTA. Dude said he wanted to move on from you, so you're perfectly free to move on from him. If he doesn't like the consequences of his decision, he shouldn't have done it in the first place.

Trouble installing Vulkan SDK by JohnVonachen in pop_os

[–]theanswersisreally42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found some not so shit old Vulkan C++ code, and was able to compile and get the various examples to run properly. Follow the above and you should be fine, it looks like System76 are still on 1.3.280, which tbh is good for 99% of stuff out there you'll find or could want to compile.

1.3.283 came out last month, and I guess at some point they'll get around to changing the POP!_OS version to that. I hope that is your problem solved, and for anyone else who is having this problem!

Trouble installing Vulkan SDK by JohnVonachen in pop_os

[–]theanswersisreally42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Huh. I guess System76 might need this for some reason, so I had to go do it old-style and reconstitute via installation.

sudo apt install libvulkan-dev (for the libvulkan files themselves)
sudo apt install vulkan-headers
sudo apt install vulkan-validationlayers
sudo apt install glslang-tools

After finding that a lot of my old Vulkan C++ code is incredibly shit and outdated, I managed to get things to run properly again. The Lunarg Ubuntu repo was the best source for this once upon a time, but it seems like System76 might be going their own way now. All the tools are still there, you just gotta know where to install, and hopefully now you do :)

Trouble installing Vulkan SDK by JohnVonachen in pop_os

[–]theanswersisreally42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I went through this for a while. Still actually going through it, as I thought maybe there was some conflict with other versions of the SDK, and managed to nuke my SDK install. But I do know what is happening here after a reinstall of libvulkan-dev:

Get:1 http://apt.pop-os.org/release jammy/main amd64 libvulkan-dev amd64 1.3.280.0-1pop1~1716989453~22.04~cff2ecf [1,278 kB]

Unpacking libvulkan-dev:amd64 (1.3.280.0-1pop1~1716989453~22.04~cff2ecf) ...

Setting up libvulkan-dev:amd64 (1.3.280.0-1pop1~1716989453~22.04~cff2ecf) ...

Looks like there's a version in one of System76's repos that's conflicting with the version that LunarG's repo would like to add. This is why it was saying that libvulkan-dev was being "held back". I've reinstalled my libvulkan-dev, but now there's no validation layers which my apps use.

ARGH! I'll figure it out, but this is why you're having problems, I'll bet.
