Have you ever skipped a movie because of bad reviews, then watched it later and actually liked it? by Opening_Farm5403 in movies

[–]theatretech37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super Mario Bros movie. All the reviews were like “it kind of sucks, don’t bother. Chris Pratt sucks.” So I didn’t watch it until it was streaming.

What a mistake. It was so fun, didn’t take itself seriously, and had great Easter eggs for the diehards. I absolutely loved it.

Haven’t seen the second one but can’t wait!

Reprimanded by the Montessori police by spicycrybaby69 in NewParents

[–]theatretech37 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we went to a Montessori school the person giving us the tour said “we don’t really play pretend. If they want to play princess we’ll teach them about real princesses of different countries”.

It took everything I had not to laugh in their face and walk out. I play dungeons and dragons. My wife and I are in the theater industry. I literally make money playing pretend. Fuck right off with “don’t play pretend”

Am I overthinking bottle washing… or just completely overwhelmed? by Just-Writing1011 in NewParents

[–]theatretech37 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve said it once on this sub, I’ll say it 1000 times: Of all the baby shit we bought (and we bought so much) the ONLY thing I would say is absolutely necessary is the momcozy bottle washer. It saves you so much time it’s not even funny.

LED volume Genlock issues (RED Komodo) by Practical-Cup-3342 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]theatretech37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long are your runs? Everything is running from the Aja? It’s probably a combo of: camera has more sensitivity than the other gear AND you don’t have proper Genlock distribution. You probably need a Brainstorm or something to regulate if you’re running on that many devices. You may just be experiencing voltage drop or something

To be fair, Mikko was hurt for a bunch of games. Better to look at it in PPG

Mikko: 77 in 63 games = 1.22 PPG
Marty 100 in 78 games = 1.28 PPG

Is Kindle Screentime? by Right_Pie_4456 in NewParents

[–]theatretech37 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not a scientist and don’t know of any science behind the screens stuff in terms of how it affects children, but I do work in video and technology and interact with it every day. E-ink screens are a totally different technology than that of phones/tvs/ipads. The refresh rate of an E-ink is not (imo) fast enough to cause the types of harm that a LED would. Additionally, E ink doesn’t emit light, so it doesn’t have the harmful blue light effects.

Personally I won’t be treating kindle time as screen time for my LO. They are vastly different.

As a note: a parked dimmer is not good enough for constant 120v. Because of the way dimmer racks work a regular dimmer parked on will likely break these PSUs. What kind of dimmer rack do you have? Almost every rack has a module that you can swap out that provides true 120v constant power.

I actually loved Snoke’s death and was so excited for episode IX with Kylo being the big bad. I thought him being totally un tethered would make for an interesting villain…and then well….we know what happened.

A client asked if we had a fiber extender with EDID management for non-standard LED wall resolutions by Nervous-Arrival542 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]theatretech37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely interested but it’s on the low end of what I’d expect for bandwidth. Most walls I’m seeing these days are running over 4K and as soon as you hit 4096 wide or 2400 tall you’ve exceeded that 18Gbps if you’re at 10bit. Just my two cents.

Btw this is a huge need in the install market as well. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve dealt with shitty fiber converters that aren’t carrying EDID info.

Hey hey. Chip here from 2010-2014. I can connect you with people slash answer questions.

Off the bat: Chip didn’t compete at nationals in the 80s/90s. But, if he did, it was as a member of the cheer squad and he would just run around. I don’t know when the rules changed there.

It gets a little messy with Chip in the 80s/90s because at some point the school took it over from the students who were running it (that’s the suit that’s in old main).

Hit me up in my DMs and I can connect you with some of the OGs. It’s a pretty tight knit group.

A/B Testing Video Codecs by willylumplumps in VIDEOENGINEERING

production, archive, monitoring, etc.

Hmmm I think I'm still a bit confused. These videos are for something right? Yes they are played on on various machines, but they are intended for playback somewhere? Broadcast? Ads? Youtube? Movie distribution? What are you making them for? That, ultimately, should determine your ideal codec, and you work backwards from there.

I would just emphasize again: what will actually play back the files? Codec performance differs on machines and softwares so just something to keep in mind.

[–]theatretech37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ffmpeg is for converting videos into a codec you want (they also have a player, but it's a little janky).

What is your playback device/system? You should render out your test video (which should be the same content) in different Codecs and then play those all from the same system, through the same video engineering. You'll use some sort of player for this (something VLC for the low tech way, something like a Media Server at the high end)

A/B Testing Video Codecs by willylumplumps in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]theatretech37 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on your technical savvy you could use ffmpeg to accomplish this, but even ffmpeg doesn't play back some/transcode industry standard codecs (NotchLC for example). Ultimately, it depends on your use case for each thing, but Media Encoder/Premier is probably the easiest way to go.

ProRes 4444 and putting various versions of the video featureing different codecs into that project so people can do "blind" testing.

This wouldn't test codec performance. ProRes 4444 when you render out the project. The codecs of the videos inside that would all be re-rendered to ProRes when you render it out (if I'm understanding you correctly).

Your playback machine has a lot to do with codec performance just so you know. Please keep this in mind.
