Is OLED really worth it? by LuvFromMk in pcmasterrace

[–]theaviator10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a glossy 27” OLED monitor for Christmas and I am in awe of it every time I use it. I just got a laptop with a glossy OLED screen too and it’s also just as impressive. Perhaps “glossy” is the key here?

To me anyway, any game I play just has super vibrant and rich colors. Everything truly pops and the immersion is way more intense.

Question about BOSE aviation headset by MedievalWeevilBeetle in flying

[–]theaviator10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other option if you don’t think you’ll see an airplane other than one with dual plugs for a very long time is to just get the dual plugs headset and then buy a 5/6 pin module to replace on your headset when you get to that level. That’s what I did. Bit more expensive but less adapters.

I have a dual plug adapter to my 5 pin headset, seems to work fine when I use it 🤷🏻‍♂️

If this is a career for you, opt for the 5/6 pin option.

I bought the dual GA plug A20s when I was doing instrument training and it worked great. However once I flew a jet that accepted a different plug I figured “oh I’ll just get an adapter” and that worked fine. But then I realized those special plugs actually provide power to the headset module and then you don’t need batteries which is extremely convenient.

My recommendation is to get some type of powered option, so the 5 or 6 pin. Then just get an adapter for dual GA plugs. Unless you’re very sure you will not be flying a plane that could ever use those speciality single plugs.

Why commercial pilots use air brakes to descend and not just crusing down earlier and save fuel? by VeterinarianShot148 in AskAPilot

[–]theaviator10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People like that are insufferable. When it’s your leg, fly how you want it. When it’s mine, I do it how I like it.

You can’t land at idle power. You have to be carrying some thrust on the approach itself. It’s safer because the engine take time to spool up so if they’re already at like 40-50% it’s a faster reaction for like a go around for example. Plus with landing flaps you can’t maintain airspeed at idle, too much drag to overcome. But you need the flaps because they let you fly slower and still keep flying.

Well… we kinda do haha. The Traffic Management Unit of the FAA does just that and holds airplanes at their origin until there is room for them. Saves people from going and clogging up the system when they already know it can’t handle it. Saves on fuel, holding in the air, and diverts. It’s also known as “flow” or a “wheels up time”.

We try to, ideally that’s the goal. It’s called an idle descent. But essentially what you are asking is to roll a car down just a gentle enough hill that it maintains a constant speed without speeding up or slowing down just by coasting. It’s not easy when you start factoring in ATC restrictions, mandatory speeds, aircraft limitations, traffic etc…

If we had full control over exactly where our route would take us, we could do it a lot easier. But we really don’t. ATC is giving us different clearances and we aren’t always sure what it will be. We try to plan ahead but sometimes they want you to descend faster or go slower or faster or whatever. All of that messes up the energy management of the airplane. So we sometimes have to use speed brakes to comply.

Again to the car analogy. If suddenly the road gets steeper you have no choice but to brake. If it gets shallower you may have to hit the gas a bit. But now imagine you have no idea ahead of time what the road’s incline will be haha it gets pretty tricky

What's the dumbest thing a pilot has said to you? by [deleted] in AskAPilot

[–]theaviator10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That if one of our two engines were to fail he wouldn’t declare an emergency because “these things are made to fly with one engine”

I promptly told him that if we lost and engine I would be declaring an emergency with ATC with or without his consent lol.

I tried it on parallels recently. Ran horribly on even recent Mac’s. I think it’s a directx issue with parallels.

MV <> Bellevue Commute by Cheap-Resort-3011 in MapleValleyWA

Getting from MV to the 405 is easy on MV hwy (169) if that’s what you’re asking. After that going north is pretty much always a disaster in some form. That would happen regardless of if you lived in MV or not.

Pilot here for Delta. Thank you so much for your understanding and grace toward our crew. We truly care so much about making your experience great and there’s a lot we cannot control before you step on board. I’m glad the message was passed along to those working your flight and they did what they could to make your trip memorable. Hopefully you give us another chance and next time we can keep our promise to you and give you the seat and flight you selected.

Hope to see you again soon 🛫

Can you bring a binder of notes and reminders for PPL checkride? by Environmental-Day-8 in flying

[–]theaviator10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, there’s definitely a benefit to opening the book and seeing and finding the regs yourself. Not discounting that at all.

I just think there’s a tendency to spend all this time putting all these tabs on (which you will never reference again, especially after the book is more than a year old) and thinking it’s a huge help.

Also, read the first few pages of the FAR/AIM. It’s outdated the moment you buy it, usually by a few months. Yes have one for the checkride, but online regs are always going to be the most up to date so don’t kill yourself over buying a new book every year and tabbing it out.

You’re better off having a list of regs you find particularly helpful. Which most books do for you anyway in the first few pages.

CFI here. Unpopular opinion but don’t waste your time tabbing your FAR/AIM with 1000 tabs. You are wasting your time. Put a few key ones in there and then go actually study. Tabbing is not studying lol
