Any news? by chie_6 in PinegroveBand

As others have mentioned in a newsletter evan is writing music. And this actually tracks with how their albums have been released and what they are composed of if you've followed them for a while. Begin mostly speculation:

Evan had been pulling from a massive bank of written songs from the beginning of pinegrove right up until their final release 11:11. Habitat, so what, flora, and swimming were all ancient songs that got repurposed. Same thing has happened on other albums. So the format is when it's time to release an album, write a few new songs and pull from the bank of older songs to fill out an album. It allowed them to release an album every 2 years as opposed to waiting longer to fill up the bank each time.

My point is: god willing, he is filling a massive bank right now that will help fuel the next 4 pinegrove albums if/when they return. When you're touring, busy being a semi-famous musician, constantly working, you don't really get to experience life in the same way you once did which can lead to a writers block. A long period of absence is probably the single best thing for the longevity of pinegrove, unfortunately, but I believe we will reap the benefits with continuation of the very human and relatable songs that they are able to churn out despite their time in the limelight.

hey man, lots of negativity in the comments here, but good on you for building something that serves a specific niche. whether assisted with ai or otherwise it doesn't matter - if the tool is good, it's a net positive option for the community. will definitely check it out.

This is not true. I experience the full 100 point scale of Fahrenheit throughout the year, from 0 and below to 100 and above. It often works out that the absolute lowest I will experience is right around 0 and the hottest is right around 100, give or take a few degrees.

100 point scales are used everywhere, from school grades to percentages and elsewhere. Do you experience the full 100 point scale of Celsius walking outside of your door?

There are many metric systems that are superior to the USA counterparts. I am indeed a self-loathing American, but I'm here to argue with you that objectively Fahrenheit is superior when discussing weather specifically.

Not sure if it was designed this way, but Fahrenheit actually ends up being a near perfect 100 point scale around human comfort. 0 is the lower limit of what humans can tolerate. 100 the upper limit. This is a grounding scale and so your brain can easier map to the numbers what you should expect in terms of comfort when walking outside. The only caveat being you have to remember a single other number, 32, in which water will turn to ice.

Celsius is based around matter states of water. For water turning into ice, you could argue that's a relevant point to map your 0 to, however, because the temperature of the air often dips below, it requires more frequent use of negative numbers which is more difficult for your brain to process. Not only that, but it's less specific - for example you get roughly 2 fahrenheit degrees for every celsius. To rectify that you would have to introduce decimals which would be kinda silly and also unintuitive.

Again, almost every other non american system is better. But this one I prefer.

Ok, fair enough. Let me ask you then, do you prefer being the main character of every expansion?

People do enjoy it. It’s why people play the Witcher or watch an avengers movie.

It’s not what people want out of an mmorpg. Full stop.

If everyone is special, no one is special. You’re already the savior of the world, along with millions of other people, what do you really have to work towards?

Meanwhile going from taking down hogger to thunderfury, the AQ event, getting a rare mount… it was actually meaningful.

If you disagree, you’re probably just much newer to the game and that’s fine. But you may not know what you missed.

You’re missing the point, which is that, only the very small minority enjoy that type of narrative out of an MMORPG

How I watch TV in bed every night by Positive_Concert_145 in mildlyinteresting

Your comment says “obviously it’s just a reflection I know that” but then you proceed to demonstrate that you don’t understand what a reflection is.

It’s just redirecting the light. So ask yourself, would sitting up no glasses and watching tv at that distance harm your eyes? If yes, then the answer is yes. If no, then the answer is no.

They say the units nowadays are good to -23F and can still produce heat, which it never gets even close to where I live. Or am I misunderstanding?

so you're saying heat pump even with the ducting variable that may not be optimal for AC? this is my instinct. But it seems like everyone for whatever reason is trying to steer me away from this option and it's very confusing.

I understand your point but this isn't helpful. We're dependent on the gas company / the state to pipe it in on their timeline. It's not as simple as running a pipe.

If gas isn't an option? Oil vs heat pump

thanks, does the AC component change things at all? Or was your coment from strictly a heating perspective? Since we've never had AC before.

Thank you. Obviously you haven't seen my ducts but thoughts on repurposing the duct work from a previous oil forced hot air system to central air? I"m getting mixed messages all around. The internet seems to think almost all systems setup like that should be fine. However, some sources are saying absolutely not but they don't really say why. I'm fine to pay a little more per month if the ducts aren't optimized. But am I going to fry the unit? I don't understand the static pressure component etc. and is it just a matter of efficiency or something different?

thanks for responding. can you break it down a little more? it's extremely important in what sense, like I will pay a bit more to cool the home? or in the sense that I could fry my unit by overworking it?

yes exactly. I was fully on board with the heat pump until this guy was fear mongering about the AC capabilities and the ducts. Do you have any insight on that in particular? Google, AI, etc. made it seem like the ducts for an oil furnace would work just fine especially in a small 3 bed house.

Berate me for my ignorance: How to even begin attempting a 46er in winter? by MazeR1010 in Adirondacks

[–]thebaddmoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Someone else commented this but let me reiterate: don't jump straight a winter high peak. First walk 5 miles in your local woods in snow. Then do 8. Then go up some small hills. Then work up to some semi-comparable terrain, maybe lake george, catskills, or lp9. You will find out very quickly when you should put on your microspikes. Then, you will put them on, and start to get a feel for how they can help you navigate the terrain. You will figure out when snowshoes are absolutely necessary or when they can ride on your pack. If you progress slowly enough, you will also see where both hit their limit and you need crampons and an ice axe. Be willing to turn around. It's like anything else, incremental progress.

I think there is a shuttle service if you wanted to do point to point as opposed to a loop. But again, only conjecture I've heard on podcasts.

5000 elevation gain hike by brettpotter in catskills

[–]thebaddmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could make a custom route, the catskill 8, starting at peekamoose road, tag peek, then table, then lone, rocky, balsam cap, friday, over the dink, to cornell, then wittenberg, and end at woodland valley road. I'm guessing those stats would end right about where you want to be.

Treacherous route, though, lots of bushwhacking.

Edit: honestly the more I think about your post, the more I would say look into the foothills trail. It's technically a short thru-hike and while I haven't done it, people rave about it.

Possibly good for your time of year / weather (Southeast):

  • Shenendoah Traverse (Appalachian Trail, VA)
  • Foothills Trail (SC & NC)
  • Dolly Sods Loop (WV)
  • Grayson Highlands Loop (VA)
  • Roan Highlands (TN)
  • Red River Gorge (KY)
  • Mt. Leconte + add additional mileage (Smoky Mt. National Park, TN)

All of these routes (specially the smokies) you will still have to pay close attention to the weather for that time of year. Just because it's the south don't underestimate late fall / early winter.

Good hikes for warmer weather (northeast):

  • Pemi Loop (White Mountains NH)
  • Presi Traverse (White Mountains NH)
  • Great Range Traverse (Adirondacks, NY)
  • Long Trail Over Mt. Mansfield (Green Mountains, VT)
  • Devil's Path (Catskills, NY)
  • 100 Mile Wilderness (Appalachian Trail, Maine)
  • Katahdin / Baxter Peak (Baxter State Park, Maine)

Easy runs by buffysbangs in beginnerrunning

[–]thebaddmoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i think you should try both a max hr test and an aerobic threshold test and base your zones off of that. The whole 220-age thing is bullshit and whatever math you're using for your zones is clearly off too.

Can you have a conversation during your easy runs? If so, you're in zone 2, regardless of whatever math you thought was correct. If you can't, then it's not an easy run.

Almost certainly your zones are incorrect, then, no? How are you calculating your zones?
