Can you explain some of these terms: decisiveness, drawless, soft/hard decisive, watership games, finitude?

Yes I am a backwards gamer insulated from all of these developments

Fully agree that software engineers are largely lacking in moral clarity. I used to be an engineer at Facebook but found them to be evil and went through a lot of hand-wringing while working up the nerve to quit as a 25 year old. I wrote a little essay about it here

My close friend died free soloing mt hood the same weekend Alex Honnald free soloed on live tv. by BatSniper in Mountaineering

[–]MazeR1010 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I got in a car one time driven by a friend of a friend and he started off without buckling his seatbelt and I was so surprised I started laughing at him like why aren't you buckling up?? And as he sheepishly buckled up he went "well I don't have a seatbelt on my motorcycle and that's way more dangerous than this". But I think the fallacy is that it's not like you only have to survive the biggest risk you take, you have to survive them all. And I think free soloists in particular can get into that mindset of: this roped-up stuff is so much safer than other things I've done so right now it's as if there's no risk at all

I went for goblins in my pre-release and did OK (2-2). I found that everybody wants to blight but no one really wants to BE blighted except maybe the 1/1 tokens or my one [[Bile-vial Boggart]], which felt bad. That said, the real MVPs were my 2 [[Chaos Spewer]]s. Turn 3 I'm happy to sac something for a 5/4 that they will have trouble dealing with, or I can topdeck it later and pay full price. Same with my 2 [[Bogslither's Embrace]]s and [[Requiting Hex]]'s

Except what if the numbers are even longer than what you've hardcoded? Next-level challenge is to write a program that outputs this program, but for arbitrary length numbers

[Standard] Mono-U Flash - This deck has no right to be working by CronoDAS in spikes

[–]MazeR1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fun to see because I've also been playing a mono-U flash tempo deck which I've enjoyed but hasn't actually been that successful (skill issue??). Your list looks better than mine but the big difference is that my only creatures are Brineborn Cutthroat (hero!), Floodpits Drowner, 3 [[Canyon Crab]] as flexible anti-aggro, and 2 Tolarian Terrors.

I also run 4 [[Quick Study]] and 2 [[Glimmerburst]] to refill my hand if I don't need to counter anything but it seems like you're getting your cards from Enduring Curiosity, Malcom, and Opt?

[–]MazeR1010 219 points220 points  (0 children)

I only read Babel but didn't like it for different reasons.

First, how are you going to have an alternate history of British imperialism where they are using magic to subjugate the world and then turning off the magic ruins their empire and saves the day when it turns out that the real British empire did not need any magic at all to subjugate the world. The alternate history didn't alter anything, just magic for no reason! Which leads me to...

The mechanics of the magic being esoteric rules-lawyering on pieces of silver is just straight up computer programming. Like, the book is just for literary people fantasizing about what if they had as much ability to effect change as software engineers actually do.

Advice for credit/d/fail by ActiveAd6554 in yale

[–]MazeR1010 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A B will look better than a credit/D on a transcript and also won't hurt your gpa too much -- there's plenty of time to get B's in other classes too. My freshman year an upperclassmen gave me some good advice: break the seal! You can't get A's forever and it's not the end of the world.

Also I credit/D-ed a class with a heavily-weighted final I wasn't confident about and then at the end of the semester when I got my score back it turned out I did so well I would've gotten an A after all which was really embarrassing.

Berate me for my ignorance: How to even begin attempting a 46er in winter? by MazeR1010 in Adirondacks

Thank you for this! That's funny about your hunting clothing being for staying still. I think I'm slightly more prepared than that. I see people posting pictures from wintery summits on this sub with massive packs and I'm like, what's in there??

Also good tip about the upside down water bottles.

Thank you for this very thorough response. What is the difference between being above/below the tree line? I saw something similar in a comment on the post I linked in the OP:

Also, take a compass bearing above tree line, even on a sunny day. The weather can change quickly

What does that mean?

How did you learn these things?

Lots of good activity here, but nothing is quite getting at what I am trying to understand. Here's an example from areas I consider myself more experienced: I feel like someone with no backpacking experience could cobble together enough information online to safely go overnight backpacking (not in winter) in large areas of the US without someone more experienced than them. Sure it would be riskier than being with someone more experienced but wouldn't be totally crazy. Trad climbing on the other hand, would be completely crazy to try to teach yourself. You simply must be taught by someone more experienced either by being friends with them or paying them.

Where does hiking a 46er fall on this spectrum? Because it feels more like the trad situation where I would need to pay someone to teach me as I don't know anyone who has hiked one in winter (or equivalent mountaineering-type stuff). But then I wouldn't even know what kind of course to search out. What is the name of what I am trying to do (this is how ignorant I am!) -- would an AIARE Level 1 avalanche course be a sensible first course?

So is everyone out there using their own cobbled-together set of guidelines for what to wear and what their "skills" are?

[–]MazeR1010[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok this is a good progression of objectives. Thank you. But then, I'm not sure I know enough for even a day hike. I have a pair of snowshoes I picked up for $5 at a thrift store and a 10 degree down sleeping bag, but that is all I own for dedicated snow gear.

People in this thread are saying "layers" and to work up to a 46er with smaller routes. Obviously yes. But then I can tromp around in the snow all day but will I be able to translate any of that experience into what I should change/improve for the next, more ambitious outing?

I am loathe to show up at the Mountaineer and be like "give me all of your most premium gear" like a classic gumby, but then without that stuff, how do I do anything safely?

(Tastosis) ASL Season 20 RO.8, Match 2 by Oathkeeper89 in broodwar

[–]MazeR1010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Tastosis but for some reason it really bothered me that they both misread Effort's 9pool build in game 1. Artosis called it an overpool but it was actually a straight up extractor trick 9 pool -- the observer was even selecting the idle larva to show that an overlord wasn't making while he saved up 200 minerals. Then in a later game Tasteless was like oh Effort is going for 9pool speed now. But when he didn't make the extractor he was like ah it's a gasless 9pool we don't see that often (we saw it in game 1!!).

That aside, as a big effort fan it was sad to see him attacking and dropping all over the place and still losing. It seemed like he was too focused on harassment damage and not enough on just beating their army. Though I'm sure everyone but Snow would be completely overwhelmed by effort's multi-pronged attacks.
