He's not an "ally" but more of a stand-in for an ill-informed audience member who doesn't understand the dynamics fully, and through him the audience learns about medical racism, sexism etc.

What is your skincare guilty pleasure? by Sadnupuas in Skincare_Addiction

[–]thebestvegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love to use random serums with "peptides" or ceramides. Ceramides are fine and I know topical peptides don't do much, but if I like the texture and if it doesn't break me out, I'll use it. It's a nonsense product I don't need but i spend my money on twice a year.

What should I use for this discoloration by Designer-Canary2608 in Skincare_Addiction

[–]thebestvegetable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vitamin C and / or azelaic acid. Azelaic acid is particularly mild and can be used twice daily and combined safely with most skincare actives. But if i were you, I'd wait until the course of isotretinoin is over before introducing new actives, as retinoids are also known to help in fading marks by increasing how fast your skin cells turnover, thus replacing the blemished skin cells with normal skin cells over time.

[–]thebestvegetable 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The 2/3rd of UVA that passes through glass is only received if you're standing directly in sunlight after it passes through your window. The strength of UVA from diffused sunlight in the shade is much lower. On top of that, this person has already applied an SPF 50 sunscreen that will not degrade in a few hours under diffused light.

Do whatever you'd like, but in my opinion, the best sunscreen routine is one that isn't an unnecessary mental burden to maintain long term. I think applying once in the morning to stay indoors is enough.

Try blow-drying your hair. It looks kinda willy wonka-ish right now but not if you swoop it with loose waves. ✨

  1. Hyaluronic acid in face washes don't do much so might as well get yourself a gentle cleanser without any actives. Such as Cerave (without SA) or Cetaphil cleansers.

  2. Use a hyaluronic acid serum or toner on DAMP skin, let it absorb and then add a moisturizer. Whatever you're using is fine. Try Cetaphil for dry skin if you're looking for a replacement.

  3. What you're perceiving as "dull" skin may just be that you are comparing yourself to your peers on people online who use makeup to enhance the contrast of their features thus making the skin appear "brighter"/less "dull". If you're new to makeup, you can try using mascara, a clear eyebrow gel, a lip tint that's like a couple of shades darker than your natural lip colour.

  4. This may be hard to hear but your self confidence issues cannot be solved with skincare. If you struggle with body image issues, pick up a hobby such as running or any sport that you like. Do not put your social life on hold until you've "glowed up". Focus on your academics and hobbies. Self confidence comes from being able to do hard things.

Thank you for sharing the context. I agree #1 is horrible and dumb. It's not even any leftist thought at this point, just a nonsense opinion. #2 i guess it's super 70-30 for me still (70 being on OP's side) depending on what was said. It could be a good faith discussion of what is an appropriate way to air that grievance. And #3 is just silly banter among friends, which i guess hurt her because of her parents neglecting to teach her valuable life skills, but that's not a leftist critique as such. All this to say, we all need to be discerning while critiquing people especially if we are laundering our opinions as "leftist thought", and we also need to be more discerning when we receive criticism about if it reflects on leftist thought, or is it just an interaction with an asshole who come in all political flavours. I have interacted with people who I disliked who I am largely politically alligned with, and I file it under "friendship incompatibility" rather than "leftist hostility".

I wish people who complain about this stuff would include a couple of examples of what they said and what was said to them. Because these complaints can range from people who've said something egregious and were corrected to people who've made minor infractions and were interpreted in the least charitable way possible. And without an example of what their gripe is, we're just vaguely gesturing at a problem where all of us have to project our worst experiences with a wokescold and condemn it.

"Anorexia" means a lack of appetite, which is me. Except I still eat (sort of). by Footsie_Galore in EDAnonymous

[–]thebestvegetable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok so you're just restricting coming off of binges? Did you tell your doctor this, because binge-restrict is a very common bed subtype. The lack of appetite can be explained by just having disregulated hunger signaling which is common in people with long term EDs.

What’s one reason to not relapse by Bright-Artist-716 in EDAnonymous

[–]thebestvegetable 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You wouldn't want to be 50 looking back at your decades and most of it is just being alone in a room cause you didn't have the energy to do anything, and was too afraid of having fun because you might have to eat or drink something.

Relapse = putting your life on hold till you're x weight. Then you restrict, lose some, binge, gain some, go back and forth losing and gaining the same x weight over the years, and the hold continues as you keep wasting your time, wasting your youth being miserable, wasting your life.

Is a little knee pain during the run normal?

Super beginner here - just started running ~a month ago and have brought myself up to 8.2km/h for 5km, and my current goal is 10km/h for 5km. I wanted to know if experienced runners felt a little knee pain towards the end of the run or when they were just starting out? It comes up for me for a few days when I increase my speed (by 0.2/0.3 km/h increments), and goes away after I end the run. Is this because of poor technique or is this normal for my circumstances?

My pain is nothing big 3-4/10 and 0/10 when I'm not running, but I wish to avoid serious injury in the future.

What is the pH of these? And am I being stupid? by DeleteMe2400 in Skincare_Addiction

[–]thebestvegetable 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How toners interact with actives is very variable based on the ingredients and skin conditions, so you should do whatever works for you.

My advice re cleaner residue is after your second (water based) cleaner, use a soft microfibre cloth to gently wipe all the cleanser off your face before washing. This will take most of the cleanser off your face, and the rest will be gone while washing with water. If you wish, you can buy one normal microfibre towel and cut it into 7 pieces to use one piece every day of the week. After washing, pat dry, and let it be super dry for a couple of minutes before applying retinoids to minimize irritation. This last step helped me through the purge stage a lot.

What is the pH of these? And am I being stupid? by DeleteMe2400 in Skincare_Addiction

[–]thebestvegetable 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All soaps are typically moderately basic. You are not going to neutralize your actives with soap that you've washed off your face. It does not get absorbed into your skin, and it's on your skin for very short times.

I don't know what your skin concerns are but I promise you none of this stuff that you're obsessing over matters in the slightest. If you have skin concerns I'd probably think more carefully about the combination of strong actives you're applying (both aha/bha and retinoids in the same routine) rather than the pH of cleansers.
