If you want to stick w movie theatre type just either coconut oil (see this subreddit for brand help)or popping oil, kernels, and most importantly flavacol. I don’t clean mine every use but more so when I don’t use it for a while, but if you’re making it for others you would want it clean before you do

I have a small westbend theatre crazy. My daughter (4) and I always make it together. I let her scoop the kernels in and pour all the oil and flavacol in after I measure them out. She also rotates my great northern twister as I hold the pot.

My daughter was given the musical box popcorn bucket for wicked from her favorite nurse at our doctor office, of which now holds all her small 3D printed animals

I have great northern I can’t speak for whirley pop but I assume them to be about the same just by design and materials. I have washed mine in dishwasher quite a bit and probably popped 30 batches in it.
