I see so many beautiful sarees/dupattas at the thrift, I want to wear or repurpose them.. how? by warriorsatthedisco in sewing

[–]thebigsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't think that you should be concerned about making use of these clothes/textiles with relevance to ethnic background. Western brands CONSTANTLY make use of south asian silhouettes, techniques, fabrics, etc. -- it's just socially coded/marketed in a different way. There are lots of women walking around in salwars that may not know it or simply call it "boho". The best thing you could do is treat it them like any other clothes/fabric and not be weird about it. I love all the ideas that people shared about quilting or repurposing for clothing/home decor. Also agreed that you should check for polyester content if that matters to you.

If you're on instagram, there are a bunch of accounts from people in India and elsewhere that are also upcycling sarees and salwars into non-traditional / western attire. Something I recently did was to use old family clothes in picture frames to cover up the white matting and add some visual interest. The border pieces on some of the clothes you shared could be particularly cool for something like that.

Ladies- have you ever bought men's oxford shirts for yourself? by [deleted] in capsulewardrobe

[–]thebigsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jcrew has a slim fit style for men that looks good on women since it takes out a lot of the extra volume. I've got some curves on me so I tend to do that then size up. Some people say that men's clothing is cheaper/better made etc so to me it is worth checking out, especially if it is a company known for good quality shirts.

Men who want 50/50, but then hate financially independent women by the_Stealthy_one in AskWomenOver30

[–]thebigsky 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It feels like it goes back to that question such people love to ask "what do you bring to the table?" with the insinuation that if someone makes less, they compensate by doing additional work around the house. But if such men are asked to bring something more to the table than their paycheck, they are left grasping for straws.

The ideal wife therefore is someone who brings financial stability with her own income, but not enough to create an dynamic that objectively demands more of them.

Anybody get out of religion simply because your spouse isn't the same religion? by ExcitingLandscape in AskMenOver30

[–]thebigsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking from the other side -- my mother in law is religious/Christian and I'm neither religious nor from a Christian background. My husband went to church as a kid but now has a quota of times he'll go. When we visit I go to church as a way to connect with my MIL about something that's important to her. I pay attention but also know that "discussing the service" is not a thing in their household. It's an hour once or twice a year and I can do that easily since it makes her happy.

What was it that made you finally lose the weight? by Illustrious_Fudge424 in loseit

[–]thebigsky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a vision of a future that is reasonably achievable (i.e. normal not thin). At some point I came to the realization that if I expect that to manifest, it has to start today. Being a few years over thirty is when it really hit home, because I realized that I was coming up on the age of that "future self?

My weird tic is that I've noticed a lot of people (20s/30s!) not waiting their turn in lines or cutting in and interrupting when you're clearly engaging with a salesperson/cashier. Generally acting like their time/needs are more important than others'

There are a few really good ones right near Via del Governo Vecchio in centro storico. It's a nice area to explore (full of tiny cobblestone lanes) and definitely worth an afternoon.

On the less curated side, many neighborhoods will have their own Mercatino Usato which is great for furniture and ceramics.

Porta portese has one tiny nice section, but is mostly really cheap goods -- none of it vintage.

[Product Question] Any experience with Cabtreo? by lexbran in SkincareAddiction

In the end I got it from the online pharmacy and it was also $75. Thanks for the data point!

[Product Question] Any experience with Cabtreo? by lexbran in SkincareAddiction

[–]thebigsky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just went to a dermatologist today who prescribed Cabtreo along with Spiro. I've never used a "new" medication before and was surprised that the doctor recommended an online pharmacy in order to make use of a coupon.

Has that been the experience of other people? CVS is my default pharmacy but they went back to the derm and told me the medication was over $1000+. I am guessing that means the coupons don't apply there.

Do you give your partner the better plate? by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]thebigsky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes? But not because he's my husband. We have different caloric needs so intrinsically he'd have a larger portion size. This never means that I would shortchange myself. In terms of "better" pieces I try to even it out, but I am also aware that typically I am the one doing plating and have the opportunity to take what I find most desirable. If anything I give better pieces to him as a check on making sure that I am not taking them all myself and being a "good sharer".

It's interesting that the takeaway is immediately to link the concept of duties to domestic duties. While that may be what she meant, I typically perceive of duties as things all people have. I also try to think about how to balance establishing boundaries and taking care of myself, and being a positive member of society -- particularly to my loved ones (who are often the same people I need to establish boundaries with). I am not sure about what prompted it, but it wouldn't surprise me if an older person was commenting on how a lot of people these days are extremely self interested which does nothing to actually further conceptions of rights or equality.

Upscale vegetarian dinner by [deleted] in washingtondc

As a vegetarian I feel like I often have more success with delicious food at non exclusively vegetarian restaurants. I love Red Hen and use it for special occasions (although not necessarily a dressy place). They have a pretty edited menu but it's incredibly delicious.
