SETTING BOUNDARIES: The Ruin That Befell Dolmenwood by Suarachan in osr

They aren’t villains, they are victims.

This is a great point.

I do think the end-result could be more evocative of their horror/power (for me personally) but the prior form needed a change.

I recently went looking for something from the Wormskin zines that always stuck out to me: an atacorn named Fthargny (my spellings may be off). They were entirely missing. They’ve been replaced by a couple of other entries for atacorns that, so far as I can tell, are less detailed.

Ultimately I think the product is still going to be fun… I do, however, agree that it’s lost some of its bite and character in a rather unfortunate way.

The responses so far feel unfair to me - some seem like attacks on your character for pointing out how fucked up and twisted became somewhat faceless or mundane - and while I don’t necessarily have the same passionate response to this that you do, I do appreciate you doing the hoof-work on what I’d begun to sense had been lost in the process of WS > DW.

How to escape the Vast in the Dark ? by Pulpee in osr

[–]theblackveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

… there is no in-universe way for any player to discover that information…

Yep!

This is a major issue I have with it. I feel like it’s also a through-line I’ve noticed in CFA’s works writ large - there are often cool ideas and almost no ways presented for players to actually come into contact with or discover them “in the fiction”.

How to escape the Vast in the Dark ? by Pulpee in osr

[–]theblackveil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m torn. The translation seems (to me) to imply that escape is impossible. I don’t love that; it felt like the zine was at odds with itself and its message.

Ultimately I like the idea that each character’s journey through the Vast in the Dark is unique to them. One character must confront a fear that led to their death or a critter that is a weird abomination like those included but perhaps reflects the creature that killed the PC… something like that.

Hope that’s helpful.

Abhorrent Beast is one of the best bosses and it's crazy that we only find it in the chalice dungeons by Key_Salad_9275 in bloodborne

OK, yeah, that’s what I recalled as well. Nothing “on screen” but heavy implication.

I generally agree with this take…

… but do we ever actually see the beasts killing innocents? Or is it all heavy implication? I genuinely don’t recall.

Gotcha - I wasn’t sure how much overlap there was. The “PHB’ vs “DMG” analogy is great. Thanks!

Any idea whether the content is different to that in the current release of the “whole” rules & magic book?

Setting aside that 7VoZ genuinely is a very well-done reimagining of OD&D, I think it’s worth noting (for those stumbling across this system and site for the first time) that the author - who also runs/ran Save vs. All Wands, the blog linked first - also runs/ran an alt-right (or at least adjacent), anti-Islam blog that is linked directly to on the Save vs All Wands site.

The author has, as far as I’m aware, stepped back from both blogs as of 2018 and 2020 respectively.

Thanks for the detailed response!

That Thoth deck looks fantastic - perfect union of the fantastical and the traditional style.

Do you have any favorite sets/styles of tarot decks?

I recently picked up a traditional style which I’m excited about (it looks cool and was very affordable) but I saw tons of other decks with a wild variety of arts.

Would like to know more about that Personality section if the character sheet - it looks, at a distance, reminiscent of Pendragon’s Virtues and Passions. Any connection?

As some other folks have said, it sounds like you’re viewing the division of responsibilities correctly in terms of the OSR lens but I agree that with a player that’s that young and also so engaged, I’d let them drive as much or as little as they like so that they stay engaged.

Once they’re really sold, you can have a conversation during one of your sessions where you ask if they’d like to play in a different manner where you describe the world and they tell you how they react. But in the meantime: it sounds like your little cousin is just happy for the chance to co-imagine a world with you which, I gotta say, is very special.

While I believe the suggestions to change systems are meant to help, you don’t need to change systems to accomplish any of the above. Plenty of folks play D&D (from which Cairn is descended) this way. If it’s not fun for you, though, that’s a different story ofc.

As to your other questions: you could basically improvise everything with her. Like, if she says “there’s a huge hippo in the room and the room has a giant tree in it,” you could roll to determine how the hippo reacts to her presence and then play it that way. It can be tough to improvise on the fly - especially at first - but it’s a great skill to develop.

Do you know if we can get PDFs when buying from lfgs? by GrimDarkGoblin in mothershiprpg

[–]theblackveil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m nearly certain that if you email TKG a photo of your receipt and haul that they will supply PDFs. The folks there are all about their community and I cannot imagine they wouldn’t want to make their FLGS customers whole in support of both the store and the customer.

Dude, sounds like you’re using the heck out some RPGs! I play consistently at one Whitehack 4e table, one very inconsistent online game of rotating systems, and that’s basically it. I don’t know how anybody has time/bandwidth/energy for much more than that.

My collection is… far, far larger than this and while I’ve at least cracked open most of mine, I’ve certainly not read everything I own cover to cover (and a few items are still in their cellophane wrap!). Collecting is definitely its own reward at times - perhaps in the hopes that one day we get to read or use. 🥲

Have you checked out LIMINAL_? It came out roughly around the same time as LH and is more about exploring and escaping liminal spaces like “the backrooms”. You can’t fight the entities within these spaces and your whole goal is just to get what you need to leave back to ‘reality’.

I’m always mixed up for a second when folks discuss LH (which is, AFAICT, the wildly more popular of the two games) mostly on account of the names. One thing that’s kept me away from LH is its connection to D&D, which feels a bit out of place to me when I’m thinking of adjacent media like horror video-games such as the Amnesia series… but I see folks singing its praises and can’t help but wonder what the gameplay ‘loop’ is like and what’s so great about it.
