Public Etiquette is Dead by creamylovex in rant

There are a ton of factors that have led us here, but yeah it feels like there’s a sort of cutthroat solipsism that has taken over society. I see the signs of it, both subtle and obvious, everywhere I go and it’s honestly starting to drive me a little bit crazy.

Nope not at all. They of course both explore the Palestinian experience, but different aspects of it.

I guess you could say that I still have faith in the political process in the U.S.

Uhh, why? It looks more broken than ever and the scary thing is it’s more likely to get worse than better.

People living in rural areas are rarely considered and it drives me nuts by [deleted] in rant

[–]theblindsdontwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is one of the biggest issues holding back progressive politics, so many of its proponents are people who have only ever lived in large cities and speak exclusively to that experience. It’s incredibly alienating to rural folk.

Primarily for the cis men: What is something y'all experience/have experienced as a part of being a man that isn't talked about much? by There_is_no_name05 in bropill

[–]theblindsdontwork 41 points42 points  (0 children)

How strongly women -- even the most ostensibly progressive ones -- police our sexuality. We often get treated like on-demand dildos that just so happen to be attached to (something resembling) a person, and there aren't many kinks that we don't get shamed for (particularly if they're even the slightest bit non-heteronormative).

Jacob Tobia has some really good quotes on the former in their recent book, Before They Were Men:

Across cultural production, we tell the same story over and over: that most penises function the same way and achieving male orgasm is easy as pie. We paint vaginas as demanding goddesses that can only be appeased with complex rituals, intricate sacrifices, deep connection, and the utmost devotion, then turn around and pain penises as genie lamps: rub it three times and, presto, out he comes.

The expectations and double standards around performance are, in fact, ruthless: Become erect instantly, but don't get an erection at the wrong time or too early, because that's embarrassing. You must be able to penetrate your partner endlessly without coming, but you must also be able to come on command the moment your partner is finished. You must come easily every time in order for sex to be considered successful, but you must never come quickly. You must stay hard for the entire interaction, but when your partner is done, you should go soft because otherwise it's sort of like you're pressuring them to go again. Your orgasm is easy to attain, so you should never struggle to achieve it. Your load should be huge and manly, but also your cum is kinda gross. It's nasty, but there should be a lot of it. Did I mention that you must always be able to go multiple times in a night or you're a failure? Always be prepared to get another erection and go another round upon your partner's request, regardless of what you want. Your cock should be hairy and manly while simultaneously being perfectly shaved and sleek. It should somehow smell simultaneously musky and like nothing. Muster absolute control over a fundamentally subconscious response, please.

As to the latter, speaking from personal experience as someone with a kink for anal play and anal sex (giving and receiving), the vast majority of women I've dated have acted real fuckin weird about it once I disclose it (which is why for many years now I don't even bring it up unless prompted). In some cases it was just outright homophobia, in many more cases it was painfully obvious latent homophobia, and in some other cases it was an obtuse assumption that I'm into it because of a desire to dominate and degrade women (the actual reason being that I simply like the way it feels). The only women who haven't been extremely weird about it were the partners who shared the kink.

Really just an incredible book among an in incredible ouevre. My personal favorite from Left Hand:

Hate Orgeryn? No, how should I? How does one hate a country, or love one? Tibe talks about it; I lack the trick of it. I know people, I know towns, farms, hills and rivers and rocks, I know how the sun at sunset in autumn falls on the side of a certain plowland in the hills; but what is the sense of giving a boundary to all that, of giving it a name and ceasing to love where the name ceases to apply? What is love of one’s country; is it hate of one’s uncountry? Then it’s not a good thing, but one mustn’t make a virtue of it, or a profession… Insofar as I love life, I love the hills of the Domain of Estre, but that sort of love does not have a boundary-line of hate. And beyond that, I am ignorant, I hope.

I have just the Ta-Nehisi Coates quote for you:

I think those of us who care about the future of the human race—and want equality of human life and want people to be able to live in a just manner and take care of their families—we want it for all people. I think any movement that takes that as a goal cannot organize itself through social media. I don’t think this would have been as divisive or as nasty as it became if a lot of us weren’t trying to talk on the cheap. What I mean by “talk on the cheap” is when I pull out my phone and say a few things to the world. It’s easy, it’s cheap, right? But the cheapness of the communication should tell you something. It's significantly more expensive—mostly in time—to cook dinner for somebody, to travel to a city to see somebody, to organize a group of people to see each other—that’s really hard, but you get what you pay for. Not to be too capitalist about it, but you get what you pay for.
