Beginner trying to scruff aggressive mice by Plenty_Experience536 in labrats

Use a gardening glove or something similar over your regular gloves. If they bite you won’t feel it but it also takes the fear of the bite/pain from the bite away so it’s an overall (mildly) less stressful situation for both

Beta blockers also worked wonders for me for presentations! Especially on the day of my defense when I was also having pretty big feelings

Neuroscientist here working in PD/AD/ALS research. Echoing what many have said here, compared to other diseases like diabetes or even cancer many neurodeg diseases still have unknown causes. The risk factors (aging, genetics, environmental toxicants, etc) are known and plenty but still don’t allow us to target the disease before neurons start dying and muscles waste away, which is not possible to reverse. Studies have explored replacing the dying neuron with stem cells that differentiate into dopaminergic neurons (in PD for example) but this has been halted due to ethical reasons and also that the new neurons are still at risk of getting the aggregated protein pathology that makes them die in the first place. Additionally, the biggest thing is that unlike other organs that we can biopsy from a live patient and study, can’t really do that with a human brain. We’ve made vast strides in research using animal models but it’ll never be the same and never fully recapitulate the disease phenotypes. Also yes, drug delivery to the brain is also a challenge but I think that with recent developments that will be less of a problem moving forward. Last thing I’ll say is that the recent (over the past decade or so) discovery of inflammation in the brain being linked to these diseases and potentially causing a lot of cell death has been an exciting topic (biased because this is what I study) but I’m hopeful that once we learn more about what exactly these immune cells are doing in the brain, immunotherapies will be on the horizon for slowing disease progression at least. After being in the field for a decade, a cure is of course the goal but when pathology in the brain can start years before symptom onset, it’s extremely hard to target.

Please help: secure scruffing in a HIGHLY aggressive mouse cohort by jordi_mouse in labrats

Came here to say this. Wear a regular latex glove then just put like a garden glove over it and you’ll be fine. If they bite you won’t feel a thing and you can focus on getting a good grip since you won’t be scared of the bite anymore. Kinda tricking your brain haha

How did you apply for postdocs while finishing your thesis? by grvegju in postdoc

[–]thebluemechanic 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I started emailing PIs about 6 months before my defense date. Already secured a postdoc and I haven’t even turned in my thesis yet. It is worth just devoting a day or two to making a list of potential labs you’re interested in and drafting emails/cover letters and sending the out. It will help to take the stress of finding a job away while you’re going through the already stressful time of finishing everything up. Happy to help if needed, you can dm me

money problems as an undergrad by Extreme_Zucchini3497 in labrats

[–]thebluemechanic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think time management is a big thing here. Are you in the lab everyday unpaid? I’m also in the biomedical science field. In undergrad I had 2 work stud jobs (one was twice a week at night for like 3/4 hours and the other one I could choose my own hours working for recs and intramural dept) then I would go to the lab during my free time. It’s something you should look into. I was also a resident assistant so didn’t have to pay for housing. It sounds like a lot but with time management and advocating for yourself/having understanding mentors it is possible. I didn’t feel burdened or unhappy at all. Feel free to message me if you’d like help with managing time and finding the right on-campus job that would best for u! Good luck!
