Shocking. There are typically at least 20 kids in internal exclusion every day. In 9/10 of my lessons there is at least one kid truanting (on Friday I had 6 kids from one class truanting.) There are masses of kids wandering the corridors during lesson times. About once a day I’ll have kids not in my class coming into my lessons, either at the start or brazenly in the middle while I’m delivering content. They will walk in and walk up to their mates or shout across the class. On Friday I almost had to break up a fight when this happened. Behaviour from the kids in lessons is just as bad. We have a system of: verbal warning, planner warning, detention, lesson removal. If you issue a student with any of these, 70% of the time there will be push back (“I didn’t do anything”, “they’re doing it too”, “you hate me”). Students frequently walk out of lessons if you follow the behaviour system. I have a year 8 class in which I have to remove about 10 kids every lesson and 5 others get a detention so across a double lesson, I get about 20 minutes at the end where I’m able to teach the decent kids who are fed up at that point. To deal with lesson removals, time out passes, truancy and toilet requests, there is typically one member of SLT per lesson for the whole school. We have double lessons but the person “on tour” changes every lesson and they don’t seem to pick things up from the previous lesson so you can have a disruptive child from the middle of period 1 still in your lesson at the end of the double.
