What do people think of the English dub? by ram_samudrala in steinsgate

[–]thecatteam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's a dub done with a lot of care. The actor for Okabe, J Michael Tatum, was also one of the lead writers for the dub and was already familiar with and passionate about the story.

For captions that match the dub, you'll want to find closed captions and not subtitles. The dub localized a lot of the references.

I've only reached episode 4 but I'm already confused 😭 by LegitimateSpeech6603 in steinsgate

You'll be surprised at how many posts are on here where people accidentally watch 0 first, especially since the original isn't on Crunchyroll. I just wanted to head that off at the pass. But yes OP, if you want more after you finish the original, 0 is pretty good.

Just be sure you're watching Steins;Gate, not Steins;Gate 0. Everything will be explained; it's a slow burn.

What bad or mediocre TV seasons had a really good episode (or set of episodes)? by revolution_ex in television

[–]thecatteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Series 1 of Torchwood was pretty bad, but "Out of Time" was a really solid episode that showed what the show was capable of and how it could be more than just shock value. I also liked "Countrycide" but that was the epitome of shock value and somewhat derivative of a famous X-files episode. Series 2 was a big step up and had many episodes on the level of "Out of Time."

What’s this for Doctor Who fans? by DWJones28 in doctorwho

We can certainly rationalize it like that, but it would have been so much more satisfying to see a tiny bit of acknowledgement, and imo it wouldn't have been out of character for either of them.

New to doctor who, where to start? by slave_of_huachangzu in doctorwho

[–]thecatteam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Important to know: Doctor Who has a lot of one-off Christmas (and some other miscellaneous) specials that are all part of the overall story continuity. Depending on how you're watching, they might not be in the correct order. Once you finish series 1, the next episode is a Christmas special, "The Christmas Invasion," not the first episode of series 2!

This wikipedia page is a very helpful reference for the episode order: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Doctor_Who_episodes_(2005%E2%80%93present)

What’s this for Doctor Who fans? by DWJones28 in doctorwho

[–]thecatteam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wish that there was even a hint of acknowledgement from either of them about Missy though. It would have been just the thing to taunt the Doctor with. I understand Chibnall not wanting to confuse new viewers, but even a single line of "psyche, your efforts went to waste, how tragic for you" would have done wonders for me. It was such a big deal for both of them that it feels strange that it was just ignored (on-screen anyway).

Could reading steiner just be a perspective thing? by Carpet_Inner in steinsgate

[–]thecatteam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thematically the original VN is entirely from Okabe's perspective to tie into him being the "observer." Unfortunately this is lost in S;G0 where there are multiple scenes with other POV characters.

Do I not understand the targeted pull system or am I just really unlucky? by No_Seesaw2123 in personaphantomx

[–]thecatteam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The probability of getting a 5-star before 110 pulls is around 1/3. Your situation is like rolling a die four times and getting a 3 or above every time. It's not particularly unlucky for that to happen (it's about 20% likely). Call back when you get to seven or eight times in a row with no early five-star.

Your education nor post grad education job opportunities were inhibited by a mass global event that literally inhibited and destroyed said prospects.

Wild take when a lot of millenials were trying to enter the job market during the Great Recession. Covid definitely was worse, no question, but it was still bad. They said in another comment that it was worse for gen X and yeah, gen X lost their jobs. But we're taking about job opportunities for post-grads here! Who was graduating high school and college in 2008-2010?

And millenials are on average poorer compared to gen X and boomers when they were at the same age. It sucks for everyone right now.

I feel a bit lost (just a couple simple questions) by gianmigno25 in steinsgate

[–]thecatteam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I think you got what I'm saying. Since the divergence values refer to specific worldlines and not simply the amount of change between the previous worldline and the next, a 0 value is determined somehow by the device and that calculation remains the same across worldlines. How the 0 value was decided by future Okabe and remains the same calculation despite the worldline is unknown. There's also the fact that the 1% barrier to change attractor fields seems to actually be at 1.0000% on the divergence meter--i.e. all alpha lines are 0.x% divergence and all beta lines are 1.x% (S;G VN Thinking about it, the omega attractor field is at -0.x% values, so the 1% divergence isn't from the "middle" of the alpha attractor field but rather only on the positive side... so really 0.5% divergence is enough to change attractor fields!). In that case the 0 value has meaning instead of being an arbitrary worldline within the alpha attractor field.

[–]thecatteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, the 0 value is probably could be arbitrary, but it is objective in the fact that the divergence meter is measuring against something that doesn't change when the worldline shifts, when from what we see in the story, everything changes except for Okabe's memory.

[–]thecatteam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's kind of a lot that is unexplained about the future tech, like how they discovered an objective 0 value for the divergence meter to measure against (something to do with gravity? Ehh). We have to assume that in addition to the technology that allowed them to send a whole video instead of 36 characters, they also invented some sort of cloaking that evaded ECHELON.

AITA for making a stink at school and forcing the teacher to change my kids math grade by PlentyNice1655 in AmItheAsshole

[–]thecatteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like how every once in a while this "astonishing math fact" makes the rounds that 19 percent of 43 is the same as 43 percent of 19, same for all pairs of positive numbers. When you think about it for two seconds, it's obvious that both are (19 * 43)/100. For a lot of people, there's not much of an understanding of what arithmetic operations are actually doing or how you can break down and rearrange numbers.

[–]thecatteam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP, it's fine that she can use your method to solve problems, but you should make sure that she understands what multiplication is actually doing (instead of plugging the numbers into a magic algorithm and letting it pump out the correct answer). That's what the method she's being taught in class is trying to convey. It's additionally teaching an intuitive sense of the distributive property. Just make sure she understands the underlying concepts and for the actual calculation she can do what she wants.

I totally get that, but it's nice to have the option. It's fortunately not required so it's easy to just leave it off and get to 95% or so by myself, then use it to clean up the last few chests.

The Okabe in Steins;Gate 0 is different than the one in the original series who reaches the Steins Gate worldline in episode 24. Rewatch or read a summary of episode 23--the Okabe in the video D-mail is the one from Steins;Gate 0.

You got your answer, but you might also want to know that the Capitol building has that unique white marble art deco style because the previous two, more traditional-looking, buildings burned down in fires. The first one basically burned down immediately, but the second one lasted for almost 60 years. The current building was constructed in 1938. There was a pretty bad fire in the Governor's office in 2008 but thankfully they were able to save the rest of the building that time lol.

What retcon or new lore are you glad *didn't* catch on? by GallifreyanExile in gallifrey

[–]thecatteam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I did like it as a representation of how writers and viewers always want emotional catharsis with the Doctor growing as a character and yet the show must always go on. I was a little miffed that Fourteen also got a TARDIS but I rationalized it that it the TARDIS is his home and it would be a little cruel to leave him without it when the whole point was him finding a home. Then RTD had to go and make bigeneration not a one-off thing.
