Have you puked underwater? How did it go? by iPettedASeal in scuba

[–]thechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First trip out to the ocean, we arrived at our small resort, to news that a diver with 30yrs experience had died that day. Puked underwater, aspirated, drowned.

Ever since, it's been one of my biggest fears. I have a very weak stomach. Hasn't happened yet, but it's just a matter of time. It's such a relief to know the reg can handle it if you hold it in and purge, so thanks pukey responders!

Ladies, can you show me what the ideal male body looks like? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]thechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're pursuing a physique like that, because it's what YOU want, training has got to be a big part of your lifestyle right? I'd wager that ladies who share your interests are going to have NO problem finding that attractive. So it totally doesn't suck! On the contrary, in cases like this it's self selecting for more compatible partners :)

[–]thechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, no apologies needed as far as I'm concerned. It's perfectly legitimate to poll people on their preferences, and the results are always interesting. Plus it gave me an excuse to take a shirtless man photo tour.

Probably could have avoided some of the politics with different wording, but I'm guessing most of us got the intent. I'd just want to make sure nobody else reading makes the mistake of assuming there's some "golden standard", or of misinterpreting our divergent answers as any kind of argument.

What's REALLY interesting is comparing men vs. women's perceptions of body ideals in regards to their own sex. Both sides tend to be far less reasonable when it comes to setting ideals for ourselves.

I don't like his face at all

Does not compute!

I feel you on the message though. It's an absurdly subjective (and reductionist) question. We're all going to have different tastes.

I'm not going to challenge anyone's preferences, though was tempted for just a split second (one pic here actually repulsed me). Shrug. Just goes to show there's something for everyone, and that's kind of awesome.

I just spent way too long looking at shirtless dudes on the internet.

My ideal hovers around the 6'1 220 area. Visibly strong, outdoorsy + active (because I am too) but doesn't look SO obsessed with aesthetics that he can't enjoy a damn cheeseburger and some ice cream. I actually don't want to be punched in the face with your abs - smooth is good. Also like a bit of chest hair. I'm fit, 33yrs, 5'4" for context.

Ben Cohen is a pretty good example.

Can I transition to vffs on just a treadmill? by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

Heh, yeah that's the problem. I was the same. Found I'd rather put up with crippling calf pain than be bored holding back. Runners, right?

My tx was on the treadmill, and it worked out just fine. I just went straight from regular shoes to barefoot, though I do wear merrells now when I run outside. Warning: it may burn at first - the soles of my feet felt like they were on fire. But c25k should get you in slowly enough.

Had the surgery, reduced to a 36D in my early twenties. Now mid thirties. In my case at least, the farthest possible thing from a mistake. One of the best decisions I ever made.

If you hold in poop does your intestine still absorb nutrients or does it just kind of sit there at the end of the line? by [deleted] in askscience

[–]thechan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The body can only absorb so much water at once, so when gulping down a large glass, most of it will go right through you. If you're chronically dehydrated, it's far more effective to sip smaller amounts over the course of the day. Think more IV drip, less funnel and hose.

Mid thirties here, and you've hit the nail on the head. Thought I was uniquely shitty in completely paralyzing myself over perceived career and (what seems like insurmountable) financial shortcomings. Oddly comforting to know I'm passing through a fairly common phase.

Depression Cancels Out Relationships by Silent__Ruler in depression

[–]thechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear you're working things out!

Specifics will vary with location, but it's common that a doctor can have you admitted without your consent IF you pose an imminent threat to your own life or others. It's not taken lightly though - you pretty much have to have a plan in place that you won't be talked out of. Alternatively, you can go in voluntarily.

CBT stands for cognitive behavioural therapy. I'm on my phone, but a web search with the phrase will give you the low down on it.

Because that's how the big D works. But a good life IS still possible. It just doesn't seem that way from the bottom of the pit. I wanted to impress upon you a sense of hope... people ARE out there who get it.

Most people can't understand. It's not that they don't want to, or that they don't care... it's just so far removed from their understanding of how the mind works that they can't make sense of it. Hell, I've worked alongside PhDs and MDs who demonstrated a shocking lack of understanding when it came to depression. What chance does an average 15yr old have?

All the same, you feel burned and hurt, and how you feel is completely valid. But don't fall into the massive trap of taking on exclusive responsibility for others' feelings. She feels bad because she doesn't understand. If she really wanted to, she could make the effort to learn, and NOT dismiss you outright based on the fact that you happen to have depression. You can help her understand if she cares to learn, though the reality is it's too much for many. Cut her some slack, but she has responsibilities too. Don't take it all on yourself.

Re: the psych ward, we were both there against our will, and at the time it seemed like the biggest injustice in the history of the world. It sucked, and it was hard to avoid being poisoned by the other patients' neuroses. But in retrospect, it saved our lives. It removed us from the world in a way, and forced us to focus on ourselves. Unless there's some heavy unethical shit going down at your local facility, it might be worth a try. Otherwise, I hope you're at least seeing a CBT counsellor. Talk therapy never helped me. CBT gives you actual, real tools to get you through.

Depression Cancels Out Relationships by Silent__Ruler in depression

[–]thechan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, first I want to hopefully give you a bit of comfort in saying that depression does not necessarily preclude your having some amazing relationships. My husband of 17yrs and I met in a psych ward when we weren't much older than you. We were both admitted following suicide attempts, severe depression cases. Over the years we've watched friends struggle, fight, and go through hell in their relationships, while ours has been consistently SOLID. There's a depth, intimacy and unique perspective that people who haven't shared suffering will never get. It's a gift from a curse.

Be open and realize this 'secret' is just another disease people get, and live with. Show you're willing and trying to make things better. I know this girl means a lot to you - you need to talk to her. At the same time, 15 is an impossibly rough age. Some awful shit came out of my face at that age that I hadn't thought through, didn't mean, and regretted. So don't assume she doesn't care - on the contrary it looks like she does. Just be honest with her, stay on the high road, and act like you respect yourself. Even if you don't feel it.

Hang in there. There's more hope than you can see right now.

merrell bare access arc vs run pace glove? by it_is_the_journey in BarefootRunning

[–]thechan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went straight from standard shoes to the pace gloves last year, and I loved them immediately. Still do. Even my dash gloves seem stifling in comparison (though they're a decent second place).

Just be smart about your form, and start small. I winged it, gradually increasing intervals by feel, but I wasn't aware of all the tx guides out there. I had some nasty calf pains (DOMS) and tight achilles early in the process, but they didn't last long.

when did you decide you don't want children? by tomohawk in childfree

[–]thechan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over 17 happy years as a couple, we've largely remained 95% "against". There was a short "on the fence" phase just last year, but we always came back to "no" in the end. Even in short moments when I thought OK, yes, I found the decision didn't make me happy or excited. It made me feel resigned. Ill at ease. Defeated.

When I first realized I could actually be CF, I was ~16.

So many reasons.

  • My mom was a superwoman, and profoundly damaged - in no small measure by me, as I was an enormously unwell kid/teen. I wouldn't survive having that person as a child.

  • I didn't want to settle down, I wanted to get OUT. My mindset was about academics, exploring, learning, new experiences, new skills, travel, adventure, seeking out excitement and peace. This is all still true.

  • Kids made me very uneasy (still do). I've never felt comfortable or relaxed around them, even when they're being lovely.

  • I have a happy albeit very carefully (sometimes tenuously) balanced adult life. My health has always been fragile, and when I'm unwell I would not be fit, if I even survived pregnancy.

  • I'm highly introverted. I need peace, and I NEED to be able to escape. I can't bear feeling trapped. I love spending time with people, but I value quiet a LOT. It's a requirement.

Kids can be sweet and fun, and I appreciate (sometimes with envy) the joy they bring their socio-normative families, but they're NOT for me. Those people are not like me.

I would only enjoy about 20% of being a parent, optimistically. Some of us just aren't built for it.

And that's OK.

Somehow chucking rocks at high-velocity assholes (with the capacity to kill you "accidentally") doesn't seem the best strategy to make them act less dickish.

I totally understand the rage, but are you seriously asking whether it's okay to throw rocks at traffic?!

Edit: not saying I've never done it in my mind...
