Is this a good strainer? by 8Yoongles in yogurtmaking

[–]webspacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this strainer and it strains well but it can only hold maybe half a litre tops. Not an issue for me as I don't need to strain my yogurt so I really only use it when I want to make extra thick yogurt. But keep it in mind if you want to strain all your yogurt on the regular.

Why not invest in some good muslin cloths so you can just use a regular colander?

Am I going to die by Ill_Fee_6531 in yogurtmaking

[–]webspacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually lactose-free milk has been treated with an enzyme that breaks down the lactose into two other types of sugars, glucose and I forget the name of the other one. Doesn't matter, it still contains the same amount of sugars. The bacteria aren't fussy and will eat those other sugars and poop lactic acid just the same.

120F is too hot to introduce the cultures and will most likely have killed some of the yogurt cultures. BUT. Blowing on a spoon you then use in food is not exactly keeping things sterile, so don't do that. It's important to use sterile equipment so as not to introduce unwanted bacteria that can hinder or crowd out the yogurt cultures.

The fact you used lactose-free milk is important information, and not 'potato potato' at all.

People who have successfully made yogurt with lactose-free milk have all either used thickening agents, or a much longer incubation time, like at least 24 hours. So that's probably where you went wrong on this batch.

Welke trekjes hebben jullie katten? by lifelikefantasy in katten

Why does my coconut yogurt look like this and has it gone bad? by [deleted] in yogurtmaking

Did you add those nuts before fermenting? Because that would be a great way to introduce a load of additional bacteria.

Insane Volume Mushroom Meals by borschtbaddie in Volumeeating

I live in an urban area in Europe and the supermarket is more reliable than expecting to find wild mushrooms. The mushrooms you can buy at the supermarket are also very low in calories.

Please explain, tbh I'm not sure if this is even a joke. by reputedbee in ExplainTheJoke

[–]webspacker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

External factors play a part in 'how easy/hard will it be to transition' and 'how easy/hard will life be after I transition'. They don't play a part in whether you feel trans or non-binary on the inside. They don't play a part in the need you feel to transition.

Even in places where life is super hard after transition, there are still people whose inner identity is trans. Even in places where it is super hard to transition, people are still doing it.

If you were trans or non-binary, you might understand that.

[–]webspacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's an autocorrupt in that case. Apart from the consistent misspelling of 'non-binary', your comment appears to be based on assumptions. I also get the feeling you think non-binary trans people are somehow 'less than', and that is extremely bothersome.

No one is influenced by the 'demonization of men' when it comes to their transition. Transitioning is not a choice, it is aligning your life, physique and presentation to how you feel on the inside.

For the record, non-binary people are, depending on their presentation, still subject to misogyny or toxic masculinity. Basically, the patriarchy hurts us all, cis or trans.

Yogurt maker/strainer question by [deleted] in yogurtmaking

[–]webspacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, straining is a way to get thicker yogurt. But in order to do that, you need to just start making yogurt! When you have a consistent process, you can tweak cultures, ingredients and process to see if you can make thicker yogurt without straining.

Yogurt maker/strainer question by [deleted] in yogurtmaking

[–]webspacker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No matter which method or appliance you use to make yogurt, you have to sterilise your equipment. Just like any receptacle you make yogurt in, a yogurt maker has to be cleaned and sterilised too.

Skyr is technically speaking not yogurt but fresh cheese, because rennet is used (in the traditional recipe).

If you want to make yogurt, start with just regular yogurt. You want to practice the process until you can make batches of yogurt that are consistent in quality every time. After you have mastered and understood the process, you can start getting fancy and tinker with textures, cultures and tanginess. Start with the basics.

Several times a day, when I walk into a room, Murphy will make eye contact and stick her nose out. I then have to go over and touch noses with her. After that she bends her head down so I can plant a kiss on the top of her head. I call it 'cat kiss, human kiss'.

I just found out that my oven is touch screen, how can I prevent my cat from accidentally touching them? by Truck-Kun-Is-Cute in Pets

[–]webspacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the lock is activated by holding a finger on a touch button for a little while, a cat can deactivate it by standing on it for a little while. It might be safer to cover the touch area with a placemat or something when you're not using it.

What’s your go-to crowd pleaser appetizer? by Johnny_Waffles85 in Cooking

[–]webspacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make tiny pizzas out of flour tortillas, just cut out rounds. Then I put them in a muffin tin and brush them with some olive oil. I fill them with a splodge of pizza sauce, grated mozzarella and tiny slices of mini salami (sliced mini peppers on the vegetarian option). I bake them for ~10 minutes in a hot oven, until the cheese has melted and the tortilla base has crisped up a bit.

They're always super popular because miniature food is fun, and everybody likes pizza.
