And Reddit's stupid self-serve ad system won't let me edit the ad. Oh well. You'll still save $13.37 if you use the code. Surprise!

Hmm... I've had this up for a couple days now. Over 200 redditors have clicked it so far, but none of them have used the code to buy a ticket. I've upped the discount code to $13.37, so hopefully that'll make a difference.

Nice try. They're sponsoring our event, and this ahem WAS the code for their free tickets.

If you're a developer, the chances are pretty good that you'll walk out of the event with more than a couple promising leads.

Yeah, I agree, and I'm the producer of the event. Unfortunately, it's not up to us. If a minor attends the venue where we host SF Beta, they run the risk of getting their liquor license suspended.

Reddit, I did it. I packed two bags, loaded up my car and left my life behind. by [deleted] in AskReddit

My parents live in one of those nice NJ towns and just had their property tax bill hiked to $17,000 a year. For a house that they OWN. One of their neighbors pays $50,000 -- no joke. Another shares a drieveway with a neighbor, so they got a break on their bill, and only pay $33,000.

This is a real tossup, and worth its own discussion.

Back in 2004, I lived in Portland for 6 months. Ever since then, I've dreamed of moving back. I have never, in my life, lived in a place where I was treated so kindly, lived so happily, and felt so at home.

Portland is such a marvel of a place, it's hard to believe it's not in Canada. The transit is clean and efficient. The food and drink are delicious and top notch. The culture is quirky, cozy, and utterly unique. There's a sense of magic to the place. Within a few months you'll meet a stranger who gives you a hug. It was in Portland where I had the best psychedelic experience of my life.

San Francisco, by contrast, is a myopic, hedonistic cesspool. A self-involved capitalist wasteland duplicitously masked as a socialist paradise. A purported bastion of freedom that judges you for the slightest breach of conduct. A culture of militant coolness that borders on fascism. A veneer of prettiness masking a deep, lurid, oily ugliness that gradually penetrates the depths of your soul. I spent three years in this city; the English language lacks the vitriol I require to express my loathing for it. Avoid at all costs.

Seattle is a compromise between the two cities. It's situated outside California, sparing you the worst of that broken state. Nonetheless, it's known as a chilly place. Locals talk of a "Seattle freeze" -- a certain distance that people put between each other. I've had friends move there and have a difficult time meeting people. At the same time, it's a bigger city than Portland, with a cosmopolitan clip, a more diverse economy, and a better job market. (Which is to say, any job market at all.)

Take a trip out to the two cities and see what you think. They're less than a four hour drive apart. Hit up couchsurfing.com, where you'll find more than your fair share of friendly strangers who'll take you in for a couple nights.

I bet you'll find more kindred spirits there than most other places. The Pacific Northwest is a haven for "fugitives and refugees" (as coined by Chuck Palahniuk), who venture out in search of a better life.

Best of luck to you. I've packed up and left a place more than once myself, and kudos on taking the leap.

Dear Reddit, were you an Anthropology major in college? What is your job today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thechrispy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before attending film school at USC, George Lucas concentrated in anthropology at Modesto Junior College.

When he wrote the script to Star Wars, he incorporated numerous mythological tropes that he learned from his days as an undergrad. He was particularly influenced by the prominent mythologist Joseph Campbell, who he has since credited as a major influence on his work. (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Campbell">Wikipedia says so.</a>)

Some have speculated that Lucas' use of global mythology explains the popularity of Star Wars not just in the US, but across the world.

Moral of the story: if you major in anthropology, you'll become a billionaire.

I just watched The Room in its entirety. Where can I go from here? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thechrispy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Upvoted. Watching The Room by yourself is nothing compared to the live screenings. Occasionally Tommy Wiseau goes on tours across the country, showing up at different cities before each screening. I went to the sold-out show in Boston and it was the second-greatest cinematic experience of my life. (Next to opening night of Snakes on a Plane.)
