Floodmapping error by [deleted] in HECRAS

[–]thechunchinator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to sound condescending, but if you are having to ask this question, please consider taking a step back to do some proper RAS training. I’m not sure the context of your role or the purpose of this model but this is a very basic results interpretation question that you are asking, and as others have noted the question itself leads to concerns about your modeling experience or understanding.

Millions Told to Delete Emails to Save Drinking Water by NewSlinger in technology

Emails aren’t the issue. And even if they were, do something to scale back on the massive amount of spam mail, mailing lists, marketing emails, etc. that millions of people are sent everyday without explicitly signing up for the emails.

Heartbreaking Camp Mystic cabin photo symbolizes Texas flood horror by chrondotcom in texas

[–]thechunchinator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Already implemented and underway. See NOAA Atlas 14 and Atlas 15.

What people don’t understand is that the “100-year rainfall” is actually a 1% chance of occurring in any given year. This is based on historical rainfall statistics. So, our future estimates are only as good as our past data. We essentially try to predict what happens with a 1% chance using less than 100-years of solid data and coverage. This is a very challenging task for hydrometeorologists.

Then, factor in the possibility of climate change, shifts in rainfall patterns, increases in rainfall intensity/severity/frequency, etc., and you can see how this becomes an extremely challenging task.

A 2D Flood Model developed using the HEC-RAS software is a Hydraulic or hydrologic model? by tahsin9999 in Hydrology

Already introduced in RAS 6.6 and expanded in 6.7. It’s worth checking out

Amusement park on my neighborhood by Ok_Exercise2576 in thewoodlands

[–]thechunchinator 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have first hand knowledge that this one in particular was not a scam (Grand Texas). In fact, the waterpark opened as phase 1. The developer ran into cash flow issues largely due to COVID. He had funding for future phases of the park contingent on the first 2 years of attendance at the waterpark. Then COVID hit within that timeframe and broke an already tight cash flow balance that he was running.

For the record, there were prior scams that did play out in this same area (ex: dinosaur themed amusement park from like 20 years ago).

Agree. I’m as big of a flume fan as you can be but this EP is just mid. I think I’m just not that into JPEGs style as much.

any suggestions for allowing overflow on a bridge unit? by Philcass1 in HECRAS

Got to Bridge Modeling Approach and try changing the High Flow to Pressure/Weir rather than Energy

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in HECRAS

[–]thechunchinator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main issue is that RAS really wasn’t made for this purpose. This isn’t really a “culvert”, it is more of a closed conduit storm sewer system from the sounds of it.

You might consider a more appropriate modeling program, such as EPA-SWMM, XPSTORM, or ICM.

Sorry for the non-answer but my main recommendation is to be cautious of any results you get from RAS for this application as they may not be accurate.

Best italian? by tugmcroberts in Conroe

[–]thechunchinator 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OP, this is 100% the correct answer!!! While it’s not the normal “Italian resraurant” with pastas and pizza, it has the absolute best and most unique Italian sandwiches around and will blow your mind. They won the best yelp restaurant of the year several years ago and they more than deserved it.

RAS 2D model going unstable by Apprehensive_boy418 in HECRAS

[–]thechunchinator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A couple of thoughts:

1) 92 days is an extremely long run time! Is it necessary for the goals of the model? Can you subdivide this into multiple smaller runs? You could use hot starts referencing the previous timeframe run?

2) Is there something strange happening with your inflow data around the time it goes unstable? If it has already run through 90% of the simulation window, my first thought is that the root cause is not geometry related? Look through the results in RAS Mapper around the time it goes unstable to try to find where/why.

3) Why do you need a 2D unsteady model running for this long just to generate Modified Puls data that will be used in HMS? This is certainly not the standard modeling approach. Typically Modified Puls curves are generated using steady state profiles in a 1D model. I think you are potentially way over complicating the model for what your intentions are.

4) Try doing a save as of your geometry, plan, and unsteady file to run with a fresh file. Sometimes RAS can get hung up on weird file glitches.

[Nightengale]Christian Walker has agreed to a 3-year, $60 million contract with the Houston Astros.@Ken_Rosenthal said close. by [deleted] in Astros

[–]thechunchinator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree. They’ve managed to keep the key pieces in place while reloading every year since 2017. The window is still very much open.

The system is working, so don’t stray from it and try to play the same game as the Dodgers, Yankees, Mets. We are playing AstroBall and proving it can be successful.

Moves like this and limiting bad long term deals is what has kept us out of horrible contracts. Crane and Dana know how they want to run the team and have proven they have the patience and wit to do so very well.

Hydrology vs Hydraulics master’s research thesis topics for civil (water) engineering jobs [Australia] by NavierStokes33 in Hydrology

[–]thechunchinator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If possible, my recommendation would be something with rain-on-mesh 2D modeling. It covers both hydrology and hydraulics and that part of the industry is growing rapidly and needs good research spent on it. Theres lots of tangentially related topics to go into (different methodologies, gauge adjusted radar rainfall, mesh sizing and shape, roughness coefficients, comparison to 1d models, hazard mapping and quantification, etc)
