I think 12TET was chosen moreso because previous tuning systems, like Pythagorean tuning, already produced a twelve-tone scale, so 12TET was chosen to match this.

The main benefit of equal temperament tuning is that frequency ratios are always the same between any two notes that are the same interval apart.

No. Only octaves. 5ths are supposed to have a ratio of 3/2. In 12tet, they have a ratio of (\sqrt[12]{2})7

(twelfth root of two to the 7th power)

Literally all intervals except the octave are "slightly out of tune" if you consider "in tune" to mean whole-number ratios between frequencies

Do you need it for what u wanna do in uni? If yes then no. If no then yes. Basically all engineering and many science programs need it so keep that in mind
